25 August 2008, 4:00 p.m. JUST IN TIME FOR THE BEGINNING OF FALL SEMESTER, here are a few links to some resources that may be of use in your classes. (Note: the first hint is for Bridgewater College faculty only.)

1. To see the directory of your X-drive and access the files on that drive, open Outlook Web Access and click on the Documents link at the bottom of the navigation list on the left-side of the browser window. Then click on "Open Location" and type in the following address and

  \\fshome\faculty$\<username>

Replace <username> with your network username (without the <> marks) before clicking "Open."

2. Explore the a tutorial to help introduce the new look and feel of MS Office 2007. This tutorial discuss the ribbon, Office button and quick access toolbar and how to use them. The tutorial is on the Academic Computing web site:

  http://www.bridgewater.edu/~rbowman/acadcomp/

From there select "Software - Tutorials and Other Resources" and then the MS Office 2007 tutorial.

3. Configure MS SharePoint Designer to make it work more cleanly as a web page editor for faculty. FrontPage 2003 has been replaced by SharePoint Designer 2007. While their names are different, SharePoint Designer is essentially an updated FrontPage. A tutorial online at the Academic Computing site shows how to customize SharePoint Designer for simplified operation. See it at:

  http://www.bridgewater.edu/~rbowman/acadcomp/

From there, go to the Web Authoring link and open the tutorial.

4. Check out TeacherTube for videos appropriate for use with classes. Search or browse the site as you wish. The videos may be linked to your Moodle web pages or downloaded to your hard drive. Find the site at:

   http://www.teachertube.com/index.php

As an example, find the classic Abbot and Costello Math Problem video at:

   http://www.teachertube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=93b89d8fbee5667d077f

5. Play an audio file of the latest or archived NPR radio programs. The main NPR site can be searched by program name. Segments are available via streaming audio. Go to:

   http://www.npr.org

Selected segments are available as podcasts, which are simply audio files that may be downloaded to your computer (and not just to your mp3 player). Search for these at:

   http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/podcast_directory.php?type=main

6. Interested in using Google Earth with your classes, go to the "Google for Educators - Earth" page. Zoom in on satellite photos of locations around the world.

   http://www.google.com/educators/p_earth.html

7. Is computer programming a crucial tool  for your or your students? Investigate Microsoft's free download of the 2008 Express Editions of Visual Basic, Visual C#, Visual C++ and other cool stuff at:

   http://www.microsoft.com/Express/Download/

8. Explore Sustainable energy (as some physicists see it) by visiting online presentations from a recent conference at:

   http://rael.berkeley.edu/files/apsenergy/

9. HP Carbon footprint calculator (for printers) can be accessed at:

   http://www.hp.com/large/ipg/ecological-printing-solutions/carbon-footprint-calc.html?jumpid=ex_r2548_go/co2printcaculator

Try any or all of these links and then share your most unique or helpful online resource using the form below.
