About Us

Founded in 1880 as the first coeducational Virginia college, Bridgewater College has championed an educational philosophy of traditional values, exceptional scholarship, meaningful activities and service to the community. This philosophy – that there are more ways than one in which to learn, grow and succeed – is grounded in tradition and provides a rare constancy in today's ever-changing society.

Now, as then, the College emphasizes ethical and spiritual values, heritage, institutional idealism, personal integrity and an approach to learning that educates the whole person. Those ideals have stood Bridgewater College in Virginia in good stead for 130 years and are central to the College's mission for the future.

As a private Virginia college, with a strong liberal arts foundation, Bridgewater takes pride in its small classes, experienced faculty and quality educational programs.
