Since its founding in 1880, Bridgewater College has celebrated its connection to the Church of the Brethren. In terms of doctrine, religious practices, and worship styles, the contemporary Church of the Brethren looks very much like other "mainstream" Protestant groups such as Methodists, Baptists, and Presbyterians. Its strong ecumenical character makes it a compatible partner of Catholic, Jewish, Muslim and other religious groups. So, who are "the Brethren?"
