Biology

The Biology Department at Bridgewater College has a dual mission:

  1. To provide comprehensive education in biological sciences to biology majors and other interested students

  2. And to advance our understanding of the natural world through original research

Bridgewater College Biology Department PhotoThe department grew rapidly in the last few years in response to the increased interest and enrolment in its programs by the incoming students. The expansion has been supported by the College's vision of sciences playing an increasingly important role in the modern liberal arts education.

Current faculty include scientists/educators, whose scientific expertise ranges from:

  • Biology of microorganisms, fungi and plants
  • To biology of fish, crustaceans, amphibians and terrestrial animals

Scientific approaches encompass:

  • Molecular
  • Cellular
  • Organism
  • Population and Community/Ecosystem levels of inquiry

Those of which translate into ample course offerings in all major subdisciplines of biology.

The Biology department is located on the first floor of the McKinney Science Center, which was constructed in 1994 as a comprehensive teaching center for Sciences and Mathematics. In addition to six teaching laboratories that are well equipped to provide hands-on exploration in Biology of Organisms, Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Population Biology, there is also a teaching/research greenhouse with the adjacent Shrum Garden, and a Herbarium.

Several active faculty-student small research labs provide individual research opportunities for students who decide to pursue honors and independent study courses.

Additional student resources include a Computer Lab, several multimedia lecture halls, and a lounge. A recent addition includes the Natural History Collection, which houses unique, extensive collections of shells, butterflies and other wildlife specimens that have been donated to the college. Several display modules that present the Collection allow students to admire and appreciate the diversity of life.

The department takes full advantage of its central location in the Shenandoah Valley. Regular field trips to local environs throughout Virginia and West Virginia are incorporated into many relevant courses throughout the year.

Several programs of study have been developed to accommodate the variations in students' individual interests, especially with respect to postgraduate plans.
