| The mission of the Biology
Department is (1) to prepare students for entrance into the various
professional schools; and (2) for entrance into the job market. The
academic preparation is specific and yet broad-based. It is specific in
that the course titles described are comprehensive and detailed. It is
broad in the sense that these topics are discussed from varying viewpoints
ranging from the framework of evolutionary theory to the applications of
molecular biology. Within this framework, several specific
programs of study are available.
The Department is housed in the McKinney Science
Center, which was constructed in 1994 as a comprehensive teaching center
for Science and Mathematics. We are housed on the first floor.
In addition to five working laboratories that cover the fields of
Organismic, Population and Molecular Biology, there is also a Greenhouse,
the adjacent Shrum Garden, and several Faculty-student small research
labs. Also on the first floor is a Computer Lab, two lecture rooms,
and a Herbarium.
The Department takes full advantage of its central
location in the Shenandoah Valley. Field trips to local environs
throughout Virginia and West Virginia are routine. There is also a
very active and involved research program for honors and independent study
courses.
