Sarah E. Swank (Emeritus)
Dr. Sarah Swank, Professor of Biology
Dr. Swank came to Bridgewater in 1981. She got her B.S. degree in Biology from James Madison University; M.A. in Biology from the University of Virginia and the Ph.D. from the Ecology and Evolution Program of the University of Southern California. She has a strong background in marine ecology and environmental science. Her current teaching areas include Ecology, Evolution, Zoology and Human Anatomy. Her recent research interests relate to the ecology of terrestrial plant communities. She does field-oriented research using both descriptive and experimental approaches. Since coming to Bridgewater she has studied brushland communities under varying degrees of stress in places like California and Chile, the effects of deer on forest regeneration in Virginia and rain forest ecology in Peru, Costa Rica, and Australia. Dr. Swank particularly enjoys introducing students to ecology by allowing them to learn through personal observation. She teaches a series of Interterm field courses in Tropical Ecology involving travel to San Salvador, Bahamas; Costa Rica and East Africa.
