Questions:
1- What areas of medicine does the
PreMed Society of BC represent?
2- What classes should I take as
"pre-reqs" for med/dental/vet school?
3- When do I need to take entrance
exams, like the MCAT/GRE/DAT?
4- What kind of score do I need on
my entrance exam to be a competitive applicant?
5- What schools have BC grads been
accepted to?
6- Are there
internship/volunteer/jobs available while I am at BC that fit my
pre-med/pre-vet course schedule?
Answers:
1- Dr. Puffenbarger calls the
PreMed Society "all inclusive! two feet, four feet, no feet, blue feet
- we treat them all!" If you are thinking OT, PT, nursing, chiropractic, MD/OD, vet or anything else - check us out!
2- See this link for more
details.
3- The best plan is to have all
entrance exams done by the end of your spring semester, junior year.
This allows you to apply early in the fall of your senior semester (or even
during summer) for your post-BC programs. The admission counselors at
several medical schools tell Dr. P to push her students to get those exams
done! If your application arrives on time or early to an admissions
counselor, but your packet isn't complete until your EXAM SCORE arrives, you
can miss getting interviews until your scores arrive!
4- Every school and program has a
slightly different average entrance exam score, so you should comb the
websites for the programs you will apply to for more information. The
average MCAT score at VCU is 29 (class of 2007), while the three subscore
average at UVa is 10+ (class of 2005).
5- BC grads from the last FIVE
years are at UVa/EVMS/VCU/VA Tech/WSOM medical schools, New York School of Chiropractic, Virginia Tech and Ross University Vet schools!
6- If you are interested in
internships or jobs, see Sherry Talbott (5369) in Career Services on
campus. She is a fantastic resource for local links to both
internships and jobs. For volunteer/service learning, check with
Robbie Miller (5383) our chaplain. He can put you in touch with many
agencies! Also, think about EMT certification and our local
Bridgewater Rescue Squad, which has had many BC students running calls! |
