The biology major consists of seven required courses (Biology 207, 208, 309, 311or 314, 325, 350 and 430) and two electives. Supporting courses are General Chemistry 161 and 162, Precalculus Mathematics (Math 120), and Survey of Calculus (Math 130). Additional requirements include the general education component which Bridgewater College requires of all students.
Biology 207 and 208 are taken the freshman year. These courses survey the kingdoms of organisms. Labs emphasize contact with these organisms. The sophomore year is primarily chemical in nature. Students will take Genetics (309), General or Human Physiology (311 or 314), and Cell and Molecular Biology (325). The Junior year covers aspects of population biology with two courses: Ecology (350) and Evolution (430).
The senior year is for the completion of electives, as well as participation in any independent study, honors projects or special projects.
Internships are available. This involves an off-campus experience that would familiarize you with a "real-world" job situation, and this produces three-hours of academic credit and some experience to put on your resume.
The advising system of the department is close and personal. You will have a faculty mentor who will work with you and design a program tailored to your needs. |
