
Majors/Minors
There are three ways to complete a major in English. Track One--Writing Track Two--Literary Studies Track Three--Language and Literature The shared 21-hour core for any of the three tracks include courses in writing, Shakespeare, American and English literature, and the senior seminar. Majors choose an additional six courses from departmental offerings. Prerequisite courses for majors include introductions to writing and literary study. A minor in English consists of introductory courses (taken during the freshman year), courses in Shakespeare, American literature, and English literature, and three elective courses within the department. Elective offerings include writing courses in professional writing, workplace writing, newspaper writing, creative writing, writing for electronic environments, and teaching writing and literature courses including science fiction; movies; children's and young adult literature; linguistics and grammar; classical, medieval, and modern literature; Black, Irish, Russian, American Indian, and South African literatures; Southern literature; and courses in major literary figures. English majors wishing to teach in elementary or secondary education settings participate in Bridgewater College's state-approved teacher certification program. |
