Majors/Minors

The Major in Family and Consumer Sciences Education is designed for the student seeking certification to teach in elementary and secondary education. Students major in the subject area most closely related to what they would like to teach. Teacher certification requires application to the Education Department; a 2.5 grade point average; and passing scores on the Praxis I exam. Upon completion of the program, passing scores on Praxis II are required for secondary education. In addition to academic expertise and classroom capability, teacher education programs promote lifelong learning, professionalism, understanding of diversity, technological literacy, and knowledge of special education.

The Major in nutrition and Wellness is for the student interested in physical fitness and wellness, nutrition, and health promotion. The major prepares graduates for entry-level positions in private health clubs, physical fitness centers, and corporate and institutional wellness programs, and is also beneficial for students preparing for medical fields. Graduates may also continue studies in nutrition, exercise physiology, health education, and cardiac rehabilitation.

The Specialization in Fashion Merchandising prepares the student for exciting, challenging and competitive careers. Career opportunities include catalog sales, clothing manufacturers, national retailers, fashion magazines, sporting goods chains, and the cosmetic industry. It is highly recommended that students double major or minor in business administration, art, or communication studies.

The Specialization in Interior Design allows students to set up their own businesses, work in the furniture industry, work with other interior designers in commercial and residential design, and with computer-assisted design. Internships supplement course work by allowing opportunities to work with interior designers, architects, installers, and contractors.

The Major in General Family and Consumer Sciences Education allows students to focus on pre-K-6 education, special education, daycare, community services, gerontology, freelance work, and entrepreneurial ventures.
