Jennifer Duncan

Jennifer Duncan (Ph.D., University of Oregon, 2006) teaches World History, Europe since 1789, Africa, Asia, and Women’s History.  Her approach to history is interdisciplinary, drawing from her background in Women’s Studies and Philosophy, and tends to emphasize society, culture and everyday life as well as mentalities. 

Dr. Duncan’s research focuses on women and gender especially on feminist movements and their approaches to, and strategies for, social change.  She is currently revising her dissertation, The Editrice in France since the MLF: Editions des Femmes and the Opening of the Publishing Industry to Women, into a book manuscript that will discuss the political implications of publishing and publicity for the women’s movement in France.  She is also currently expanding her research horizons with a new project examining the relationships between French feminists and francophone West African women’s organizations and publications since the 1960s.  As a generalist, Dr. Duncan believes in the importance of expanding one’s range of vision and being broad minded.  Her dissertation project focused on a French publishing house called Editions des Femmes (Women’s Press); however, this exclusive focus, paradoxically, introduced her to a diverse array of authors, topics and issues and has expanded her conception of feminism since the 1970s as well as her own scholarly interests.

Her hobbies include skiing, fly-fishing, hiking and gardening.  She has spent several summers in Paris, France, and enjoys travel.  She hopes to visit Senegal and South Africa in the next few years for research and pleasure.

Dr. Duncan came to Bridgewater College in 2009.  Before coming to Bridgewater College, Dr. Duncan taught at Linn Benton Community College, Lewis and Clark College, Oregon State University, University of Oregon, and Montana State University Billings.
