  • New History Faculty

Kara Dixon Vuic joined the Department as an Assistant Professor in August 2006.

Dr. Vuic completed her PhD in U.S. History at Indiana University. Her dissertation looked at the experiences of U.S. Army nurses in the Vietnam War and how social and gender changes affected the Army's use of these women and men. She is looking forward to teaching courses on 20th-Century America, African-American History, Women's History and The Vietnam War. She and her husband Jason live in Staunton with their very spoiled dog and cat.

  • Bridgewater Senior Awarded Durna Endowed Scholarship

BRIDGEWATER, Va. A Bridgewater College rising senior has been awarded the John W. and Lurene M. Durna Endowed Scholarship.

Elizabeth Lamm of Cumberland, Md., who is the daughter of Bea Lamm, received the $13,000 scholarship for achieving superior academic standards and maintaining good campus citizenship. The scholarship is also awarded to those who intend to pursue a career in law.

Additionally, scholarship recipients must have a grade point average of 3.25 (out of a possible 4.0) and maintain a satisfactory grade in the College's Convocation Program.

The scholarship memorializes the affection for Bridgewater College that John W. Durna (Class of 1939) and Lurene M. Hartman Durna (Class of 1940) had for their alma mater.

The scholarship is limited to full-time students and is awarded for one year.

Richmond TD Club Honors Getty in Football

Paul Getty, a senior offensive lineman from Hopewell, Va., has been selected as co-recipient of the Division II/III Offensive Lineman of the Year Award by the Touchdown Club of Richmond. The TD Club winners were honored last night during the Dudley Awards banquet, which is sponsored by The Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Brandon Borst Receives ODAC Honor

Brandon Borst, a junior from New Castle, Del., was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week in football. He was in on seven tackles to help lead the Eagles defense in the 31-24 victory over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday (Oct. 1). Borst was in on one tackle behind the line of scrimmage, had one pass breakup and one fumble recovery. He also was part of two big plays for the Eagles. Early in the first quarter on the Tigers' first drive, the Eagles stopped HSC inside the BC 5 when Borst recovered a fumble. On the final play of the game from the BC 27, Borst knocked down a J.D. Ricca pass near the goal line to preserve the victory.

Dr. Fogarty completes Half-Marathon

On September 3, Rick Fogarty, Assistant Professor of History, ran in the 5th Annual Rock 'n' Roll

Half Marathon in Virginia Beach, placing in the top 10% of finishers with a time of 1:45:59.

· (A New Professor Publishes Article

Colum Leckey, Assistant Visiting Professor of History, recently published an article, "Patronage and Public Culture in the Russian Free Economic Society, 1765-96," in Slavic Review. Dr. Leckey's study focuses on one of first non-governmental organizations in Eastern European history, particularly on the relationships between the court, aristocratic patrons, and the civil servants, intellectuals, academicians, and middling landowners who made up the core of the society's membership. Dr. Leckey joins the Department this year to teach World History and U.S. History surveys.

  • Clay Michael Named to Academic Team

History major Clay Michael was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III college division men's basketball first team. The team was selected by CoSIDA.

Michael is a junior from Inwood, W. Va.

· Faculty Present papers at 2005 International Studies Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii

Professor Frueh presented a paper entitled "Crime, Agency, and Rhetoric of Enmity"¯ on the use of rhetoric to frame the Iraq war at the International Studies Association annual conference in March.

Professor Heckel presented a paper on transnational activism for child rights at the same conference and a paper on teaching activism in international relations courses.

  • Students and Faculty Donate to Tsunami Relief

Students and Faculty in the Department of History and Political Science raised $235.23 to benefit victims of the recent tsunami. Students placed donations in a collection jar located in the Department's hallway, and faculty matched their efforts dollar-for-dollar. Proceeds went to Save the Children.

  • Heather Heckle Joins Department

Heather Heckle (Ph.D. Georgia State University) joined the Department in the Fall of 2004. She will be teaching courses in International Relations, Comparative Politics, and World History. In January 2005 she taught "Children's Issues in the Global Arena"¯, the central topic of her research agenda.

  • Continued Success of Department Australia Trip

Twenty-five students, led by Dr. David K. McQuilkin, Jr., have just returned from three weeks of interterm fun and sun in Australia. This was the tenth time that Dr. McQuilkin took his course, Contemporary Australia (HIS 335) down under. This class visited the Australian parliament and the Sydney Opera and saw the first round of the Australian Tennis Tournament.
