Mathematics
The mathematics major offered by Bridgewater College is modeled after the curriculum suggested by the Mathematical Association of America. It is a standard but flexible curriculum. By choosing the appropriate electives, students may prepare for a career immediately upon graduation or for graduate school.
Mathematics is one of the most fundamental of all the sciences and may prepare students for a wide range of occupations. Recent graduates have pursued careers in quality assurance, statistics, actuarial science, analysis, graph theory and computer programming, to name a few. We have had mathematics majors go on to graduate school in both pure and applied mathematics, as well as statistics, operations research, economics and law school. we also offer excellent preparation for a career in secondary teaching.
Computer Science
The Computer Science major emphasizes fundamental principles and problem-solving skills. It is modeled after the curriculum for liberal arts colleges suggested by the Association for Computing Machinery. The focus of the major is preparation of students for careers as programmers and systems analysts in scientific and engineering environments.
Graduates will be prepared to enter careers in the software development and support industry, or to continue their studies in a graduate computer science program. Bridgewater College graduates work in various areas of the computer industry both for private and government agencies. Several of our graduates work in scientific laboratories. A significant number of graduates have chosen fields related to computing in business and finance. By taking courses in departments outside of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, a wide variety of career opportunities are possible. In addition, by taking certain education courses, students can be certified to teach computer science at the secondary level.
Information Systems Management
The Information Systems Management major will develop a graduate who has skills in three areas: technical skills for dealing with computers; management skills for dealing with organizations; and interpersonal skills for dealing with people. To this end we offer a major that is multi-disciplinary, drawing on courses from computer science, mathematics, business, sociology, philosophy and communications studies.
The graduate will be ready to begin a career as a member of a computer service center, with the ability to deal effectively with service providers and customers. Our graduates have gone on to careers in consulting, customer relations and hardware repair.
