2005 - 2006
OBJECTIVES:
- To develop a relationship of mutual trust and respect with a music faculty member.
- To complete activities necessary for successful completion of the academic year including course registration and service learning.
- To write an essay which reflects the student's conscious selection of personal and professional goals.
- To meet regularly with a member of the music faculty.
- To encourage and monitor attendance at convocations.
- To encourage participation and leadership in organizations beyond those that are required of music majors.
- To meet monthly with music majors to discuss music department business and to hear the Music Department General Recital.
- To support workshops offered by Career Services and the campus chapter of Music Educators National Conference (MENC).
GRADING (all classes):
Following the Fall Semester, a Pass (P) or Fail (F) grade will be given. Following the Spring Semester, the grade will be based on your academic year. The Scale of 90%=A; 80%=B; 70%=C; 60%=D; will be followed.
PDP 250 REQUIREMENTS:
- Write a plan of the major.
- Update the student's Personal Essay/Résumé to include new and/or refined goals, and activities related to personal development over the year.
- Register for the next semester's and year's courses.
- Complete a minimum of 10 hours of Service Learning and to report it with proper forms.
- Use the Four Dimensions as a guide for the selection and completion of activities.
- Meet regularly with the faculty advisor.
PDP 250 Grading:
- Attendance and Participation -- 50%
- The expectation is that each student will participate in all music department occasions, which include General Recitals, Junior and Senior Recitals, Concerts, and Lyceum Concerts. Satisfactory attendance at convocations is also required. Only prior permission from the PDP advisor or an emergency will be counted as an excused absence from recitals, concerts, and lyceums.
- Personal Essay -- 20%
- By April 1, each student should have completed a personal essay including activities planned in each of the four personal dimensions for the junior year. The essay should include specific goals for the junior year and should update the essay completed at the end of the freshman year.
- Service Learning -- 20%
- Ten (10) hours of service learning is required. It is suggested, but not required, that service learning be in the field of music. At the end of the spring semester, the PDP advisor requires the proper forms documenting the service learning experience. Important service learning projects should be included in the personal essay.
- Timely Completion of Pre-registration and the Plan of the Major -- 10%
- Each section of PDP will require personal communication with the PDP advisor to complete each semester's registration and the plan of the major.
PDP 350 REQUIREMENTS:

- To initiate preparation for successful entry into the job market, graduate or professional school.
- Attend a departmental/MENC workshop on job interviews.

- The expectation is that each student will participate in all music department occasions, which include General Recitals, Junior and Senior Recitals, Concerts, and Lyceum Concerts. PDP 450 REQUIREMENTS:
- Finalize the student's Personal Essay/Résumé and present it to a faculty committee at an "Exit Interview." The exit interview will include a presentation and discussion of the student's senior recital and any internships or practice teaching experiences. If the student is eligible for graduating with honors, the interview will incorporate requirements for the appropriate honor.
- Complete a Personal Development Portfolio consisting of a personal essay, cover letter, résumé, references, report of independent/honors study, programs from recitals the student has participated in, and a program from the student's senior recital. These materials must be presented to the music faculty at the exit interview.
- Complete a minimum of 10 hours of Service Learning and to report it with proper forms.
- Use the Four Dimensions as a guide for the selection and completion of activities.
- Meet regularly with the faculty advisor.

- By April 1, each student should have completed a personal essay describing activities experienced during college. The essay should contain a few specific achievements in each of the four PDP dimensions and should update the essay completed at the end of the junior year. The résumé and cover letter should be ready to present to a potential employer.
