About Dr. John S. Flory

Dr. John S. Flory was born at Long Meadows, the Flory ancestral home in Rockingham County in 1866. He was a writer and a teacher, and had a huge passion for higher education. He did not find farming appealing so he went to a Broadway school and later attended Bridgewater College. However, he would not let his education stop there. He went on to Ohio Northern University then to Mount Morris College.

After his graduation he returned back to the Shenandoah Valley and became a faculty member at Bridgewater College. Later he took some time off from the college to pursue his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia which he was granted in 1907. In 1910 Dr. Flory became the president of Bridgewater College but resigned in 1919 so he could go back to the students and teach again. He gave 47 years of service to the college and retired in 1941.
