What is an
internship?
According to the National Society for Internships
and Experiential Education, an internship is "any type of carefully
monitored work or service experience in which an individual has intentional
learning goals and reflects actively on what he or she is learning throughout
the experience."
The important thing to remember about an
internship is that it is more than a short-term job or volunteer work. The
student must enter the internship with specific learning goals in mind.
Therefore it is very important for students to discuss their internship
objectives with their major professors when planning internships and to select a
cooperating faculty sponsor who can best help them achieve their objectives.
Internships provide you
with opportunities to:
explore and confirm career choices.
gain practical experience to give you a competitive edge in the job market.
ease the transition from school to workplace.
gain exposure to current technology and knowledge in the field.
develop professional contacts.
earn and develop job search skills.
