Jeff Pierson - Professor of Communication Studies

Jeffrey H. Pierson joined the Bridgewater College faculty in 1992 and serves as professor of communication studies and director of the Convocation Series. He also recently took over as director of the College's honors program. Before coming to BC, Pierson taught at The College of New Jersey, Mercer County Community College (N.J.), Rutgers University and Temple University.

Additionally, Pierson has served on the faculty of the Junior Statesmen's Foundation's four-week summer program for outstanding high-school students at Princeton University.

Pierson has adopted five principles that he says guide his teaching: (1) learning can be fun (2) teaching does not always happen in a classroom (3) the best theories are the ones that get put into practice (4) learning how to disagree is important and (5) teachers are role models.

He teaches several courses including Argumentation and Debate, Public Speaking, Mass Media and Society, Communications Law, Television and Film Studies and Public Relations. At Bridgewater, Pierson has co-directed the Bridgewater College Forensics and Debate team into becoming a regional/national power. He also directs the Convocation Series, which brings well-known speakers and artists to campus.

Pierson, who has been involved in youth leadership training for several years, is the author of co-author of many conference papers and publications concerning communciation. In addition, he has been a participant at several C-SPAN conferences and has served on the editorial board of Speaker and Gavel. Pierson also currently serves on the Executive Council of the Eastern Communication Association, the oldest professional society for the study of communication in the U.S.

Pierson received a bachelor's degree from North Carolina State University, a master's degree from Temple University and his Ph.D. from Rutgers University.
