Dr. Jesse Hopkins
Edwin L. Turner Distinguished Professor of Music
Music Department Chair
"Bridgewater Fair, my heart's sweet care...I love thy sons and daughters."
Those words, taken from Bridgewater College's alma mater, hold a special place in Dr. Jesse E. Hopkins' heart, first as a student and today, at the opportunity of helping each student realize his/her dreams.
Growing up in the Church of the Brethren, Hopkins attended youth events at the College before coming as a freshman. In addition, his friends were already at BC and loved it. A natural fit as a student, it seemed the perfect choice to come back as a faculty member. Hopkins, a 1970 graduate, returned seven years later and has remained a pillar in the music department for 30 years, serving as chair for the past 11 years.
Having a passion for travel - especially international travel - Hopkins incorporates opportunities for both himself and his students in his itineraries. "I use it as a time for refreshment, gathering materials and experiencing the arts of other countries and cultures," he says. "I love sharing travel experiences with students - watching their reactions to new experiences and first visits to famous places," he continues.
Under Hopkins' leadership, the Chorale has completed five international concert tours, performing in China, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Germany.
He also has led spring Concert Choir tours along the Mid-Atlantic States and has conducted study tours for Bridgewater College students in England, France, Italy, Germany, Austria and the Netherlands. On seven occasions, he has taught Polynesian music and culture for students traveling to Hawaii during January Interterm.
Hopkins himself has been to most of Europe, Japan, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Tanzania, Kenya, Mexico and Canada to name a few. In May 2007, he is off to the People's Republic of China with a possible trip to the Galapagos Islands in July.
Named the Edwin L. Turner Distinguished Professor of Music in 1999, Hopkins is the first recipient of the professorship. In 2001, he received the Martha B. Thornton Faculty Recognition Award presented by the College to faculty members who "provide caring concern for students well beyond the role as teacher." "He has driven and inspired me to achieve my own goals as a musician and conductor," says one student. Through his friendly and caring nature, Hopkins learns to know his students and has become a role model for many.
Hopkins is a regular reviewer for Choral Journal, the official publication of the American Choral Directors Association. He also is music director at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren.
After graduating from Bridgewater College, Hopkins earned a master of music in music education from James Madison University and a doctor of education in choral music education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Heading back to campus following his many travels with students, Hopkins will raise his baton for another chorus of "Bridgewater Fair, my heart's sweet care..."
