General Education Curriculum

At the Heart of this Education is Our General Education Curriculum. The first component in this curriculum is a set of five courses that are common to all students: Personal Development Portfolio, Effective Writing I, Effective Writing II, Oral Communication, and Introduction to College Mathematics. Whatever the student's area of specialization, the tools of reasoning and communication that are sharpened in these courses are foundational for the work that follows. Additionally, all students enroll in a Wellness course that encourages lifelong habits essential to physical and emotional wellbeing.

Beyond these initial courses, the general education curriculum widens to encompass courses in specific disciplines, from which students will choose an individual, but directed, course of study. The emphasis here is to allow students greater flexibility and choice while still providing a balanced, wide-ranging knowledge base. The four basic areas of the General Education Program are:
  • Developing the Liberal Arts: Common Core Skills for Freshmen
Personal Development Portfolio, Effective Writing I & II, Oral Communication, Mathematics, and Wellness

  • Developing the Liberal Arts: Global Perspectives (distribution requirements)
World History and Civilizations, Cultures and Dynamics of the Global Community, and Foreign Languages

  • Developing the Liberal Arts: Disciplinary Learning (distribution requirements)
Literature, Fine Arts, Religion, Philosophy, Sociology, Economics, Psychology, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences

  • Developing the Liberal Arts: Integrative Learning
    Personal Development Portfolio, course linkages
