II. CAMPUS NEWS AND UPDATES

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT STONE ON VIRGINIA TECH TRAGEDY

April 18, 2007 -- To the Bridgewater College Campus Community:

Our attention and emotions have been focused for the past two days on the horrible shooting incident at Virginia Tech. Because many of us have connections with that school, including friendships with students, faculty and staff, we feel a very personal loss. As members of an academic community ourselves, we empathize, almost to the point of despair, over the wanton death and destruction. The whole world weeps over the loss of life and the pain inflicted on families, friends and colleagues.

On behalf of all of us, I have written to my colleague, Dr. Charles Steger, President of Virginia Tech, to express our sympathy to their entire campus community and to assure them that they are in our thoughts and prayers.

Shortly after we learned of the tragedy, we issued a public statement and posted it on our Web page, expressing our concern and sympathy. Monday evening, the Stone Chapel was open for those who wished to light candles and to pray. Later that evening, Chaplain Miller led us in a service of prayer and support. Today, many of us wore colors as close as possible to Tech's school colors to express our solidarity with that school. Others on campus started a fundraising effort to assist the victims of the shootings. Many of you have expressed your sympathy, concern and sorrow in other ways. Truly, our community feels intensely the sadness of the events in Blacksburg. For complete message from President Stone click here. To the view the "BC Crisis Plan Summary" click here.

BC ANNOUNCES NEW VICE PRESIDENT AND DEAN

Bridgewater College President Phillip C. Stone has announced that Dr. Carol Scheppard, associate professor of philosophy and religion, has been appointed vice president and dean for academic affairs, effective July 1. Dr. Scheppard succeeds Dr. Arthur C. Hessler, who earlier this year announced his retirement on June 30. The College conducted a national search to fill the position.."Dr. Scheppard not only had the enthusiastic endorsement of the search committee, but also strong support from the faculty and the other vice presidents," said Dr. Stone. "Because of my own high regard for Carol, I am personally delighted to have her become the College's chief academic officer. I know she will be a great colleague." Click here for complete story.

THE BRIDGEWATER FUND COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN!
Just a couple months are left until the end of our fiscal year, June 30, 2007. That means there is still time to help Bridgewater College meet this year's alumni participation goal of 28 percent by making a gift to the Bridgewater Fund. Meeting this goal is important because these gifts, regardless of size, are used for BC's highest priorities. Once there, you can use the blue Click & Pledge button to make your own gift and be counted with your classmates who have already made a gift. Thanks!

SYMPHONIC BAND TO GIVE SPRING CONCERT

The Bridgewater College Symphonic Band will present a concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in the Carter Center for Worship and Music on the College campus. III. ATHLETIC NEWS AND UPDATES

EQUESTRIANS WIN ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP!

The Bridgewater College riding team won the program's first Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship on Friday (April 6) at Sweet Briar College. The Eagles finished the show with 19 points, edging Randolph-Macon Woman's College by two points for the championship. The BC program swept the conferences major awards for the 2006-07 riding season. BC ESTABLISHES VARSITY WOMEN'S SWIM TEAM

For the first time in its history, Bridgewater College has established a varsity women's swim team that will compete with seven other institutions in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Curt Kendall, BC's athletic director, said the team grew out of a swim club that, over the last three years, has become "self sustaining" in terms of student involvement. "Until that happened, we couldn't consider it as a potential varsity sport," Kendall said. "Now we can. The interest is there, the sport is in place and the search for a head coach has begun." He said the new team will most likely start with between 10 and 15 members. Click here for complete story.
