Alumni Newsletter - Dec. 2006

December 2006
Volume VII, Issue 3

Merry Christmas! Exams are completed, except perhaps the grading; the parking lots are almost deserted as the students leave for the holidays. Still, a joyous spirit is evident among the faculty and staff who are on campus each day, and the twinkling lights of holiday decorations remind us of the message of faith and hope that defines the Christmas season. May each of you be blessed to share the holidays in good health and with the ones you love.

WELCOME, NEW ALUMNI DIRECTOR
Wendell Esbenshade will be joining the Office of Institutional Advancement as director of alumni relations on Jan. 2. He is a 1994 graduate of Messiah College, where he served on the alumni council, and, for six years, he was assistant director of alumni relations at James Madison University. In addition, he has experience in Web design, graphic arts and communications. The alumni relations office will be housed in Carter 106 and 108. Contact Esbenshade at 540-828-5755 or through Sandra Hottel, secretary for alumni and church relations, at 540-828-5451. And for those of you with inquiring minds, the name Esbenshade means "aspen wood" and comes from the German village of Espenschied.

WEB SITE IS NEW, TOO!
If you haven't checked out the new and improved Bridgewater College Web site, it's time you clicked on www.bridgewater.edu. Spend some time on the site map, looking up people and departments and exploring both the familiar and unfamiliar pages. For example, the alumni magazine, Bridgewater, is now online. So are back issues of Eagle Currents. Read about some of our outstanding faculty and amazing students. Check in for sports scores and statistics and upcoming concerts and convocations. Use the site as your handy connection to all things Bridgewater!

CONGRATULATIONS, TENURED PROFESSORS!
President Phillip C. Stone has announced this week that three professors have been granted tenure - Scott D. Jost, associate professor of art; Dr. Robyn A. Puffenbarger, just promoted to associate professor of biology; and Dr. Randall C. Young, newly promoted to associate professor of psychology. Congratulations to all!

OFFICES CLOSED FOR HOLIDAYS
The administrative offices at Bridgewater College will close at the end of the work day on Friday, Dec. 22, and remain closed until 8 a.m. on Jan. 2.

HELP WITH SPECIAL PROJECTS?
Do you have some special memories of Doc Jopson as a professor or coach or of Dr. Robert Burns when he taught here from 1962-67? Or how about some true, publishable tales from Wardo Hall? In her new position as director of special projects, Ellen Layman's first writing projects will be focused on Jopson, Burns and Wardo. She will be researching and interviewing and then compiling stories on some of the issues, personalities and places that have shaped the College. Email your recollections to elayman@bridgewater.edu or send any documents you would like to share to her at College Box 186, Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, VA 22812-1599. And feel free to suggest other topics for her growing to-do list.

AND GIVE THE COLLEGE A GIFT, TOO
Please remember Bridgewater College as you consider your year-end gift-giving. The Bridgewater Fund provides resources for scholarships, financial aid, library improvements, faculty support and much more. Gifts received or postmarked by Dec. 31 are tax-deductible as provided by law. You can make a secure on-line gift by visiting www.bridgewater.edu and clicking on Give to BC at the top of the page or you may leave a message at 540-828-5448. The Office of Institutional Advancement will be checking phone lines and returning calls while the College is on break.

FLORIDA IN JANUARY?
All Florida alumni and friends, plus everyone who seeks out the sunny south in January, make plans to gather with the Bridgewater College crowd for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at Homer's in Sebring. We also will be having a family-oriented get-together on Sunday, Jan. 28, with a 2 p.m. barbecue lunch and lots of activity options at Lovers Key State Park at Fort Myers Beach. Plan to attend either event - or both! Expect your invitations with all the details by the end of the year or check the Web site for updates.

NEED TO REPLACE A DIPLOMA?
In response to alumni who have asked how they can replace lost diplomas or upgrade from the smaller ones of bygone years to the more substantial ones awarded today, here's the scoop: The graduate needs to send a written release, including the name as it should appear on the diploma, the graduation date, the address to which the new diploma should be mailed and the graduate's signature, to Ms. Cynthia Howdyshell-Shull, Registrar, Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, VA 22812-1599. The cost is $40, and each request will take approximately four to six weeks. The replacements will carry the signatures of the current trustees' chair, president and academic dean.

CHOIR TOUR OPENS MARCH 23
The Concert Choir, along with the Chorale and Handbell Choir, begins a 14-concert tour March 23 under the direction of Dr. Jesse Hopkins, the Edwin E. Turner Distinguished Professor of Music. Plan to attend one or more of the concerts. The first weekend's schedule features concerts at 1:30 p.m. March 23 at Norfolk (Va.) Academy; 8 p.m. March 23 at First United Church of Christ in Hampton, Va.; 7 p.m. March 24 at Community United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, Va.; 11 a.m. March 25 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Yorktown, Va.; and 7:30 p.m. March 25 at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren in Weyers Cave, Va. Church of the Brethren; 10:30 a.m. April 1 at Union Bridge (Md.) Church of the Brethren; and 4 p.m. April 1 at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick, Md. After taking the Easter weekend off, the choir will be in concert at 7 p.m. April 13 at Grace United Methodist Church in Middletown, Va.; 7 p.m. April 14 at St. George United Methodist Church in Fairfax, Va.; 11 a.m. April 15 at Manassas (Va.) Church of the Brethren; and 7:30 p.m. April 15 in the Carter Center here on campus. The tour concludes with a concert at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 22, at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren.

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY ON HIATUS
Due to extensive renovations planned in the Kline Campus Center during the summer of 2007, the High School Leadership Academy has been cancelled for next year.

DAY OF SHARING PLANNED MARCH 3
The Bridgewater College Alumni Association is encouraging alumni and current students to join together in service projects in their hometowns in a national Day of Sharing next March 3. A committee of the alumni association is working with a student group to help plan the effort. If you would like to be involved, you are encouraged to start identifying projects - such as a soup kitchen, a Habitat for Humanity build, a needy family or a trail clean-up, for example - and let the alumni office know at alumnews@bridgewater.edu of your interest.
