Alumni Newsletter - Jan. 2007

Volume VII, Issue 4

It's a new year - with a new scholarship just for the children of Bridgewater College alumni! The BC Alumni Association has established the Alumni Legacy Scholarship to be awarded for the first time for the 2007-08 academic year. Current sophomores who have at least one parent who is a Bridgewater College graduate will be invited to apply for the $1,800 scholarship. Eligible students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average, exhibit good citizenship and be in good standing with the College. If the eligibility requirements are maintained, the scholarship will be renewed for the senior year as well. Encourage your sophomores to apply!

PRESIDENT STONE LEADS SACS
President Phillip C. Stone has been named chair of the Commission on Colleges (COC) of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the accrediting body for some 1,000 colleges and universities in 11 states and Latin America. He will chair both the COC and its 13-member executive council for the coming year.

IN SYMPATHY
The campus mourns the death of Ruth Irene Kent, wife of George W. Kent, associate professor of psychology emeritus, on Dec. 30, 2006, at the age of 79. Mrs. Kent was active in campus life while Prof. Kent taught here from 1954 to 1991, and both of them retained close ties to the college community after retiring to Mathias, WV. Your expressions of sympathy may be sent to Prof. Kent at 338 Mountaintop Drive, Mathias, WV, 26812-8462. Memorial donations may be made to the Mathias-Baker Rescue Squad, PO Box 89, Mathias, WV, 26812.

FLORIDA IN JANUARY
All Florida alumni and friends, plus everyone who seeks out the sunny south in January, are invited to gather with the Bridgewater College crowd for lunch at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, at Homer's in Sebring. President Phillip C. Stone will be bringing a college update as part of the program.
We also will be having a family-oriented day at the beach on Sunday, Jan. 28, at Lovers Key State Park at Fort Myers Beach, meeting at the park's gazebo at 2 p.m. for refreshments and greetings from President Stone.
Plan to attend either event - or both! Registration deadline is Jan. 18; email Sandra Hottel in the Office of Alumni Relations at shottel@bridgewater.edu or phone her at 1-800-476-4289, extension 5451.

VISIT THE ALUMNI OFFICE
It's a bit easier to visit the Office of Alumni Relations these days - not quite so many steps. Wendell Esbenshade, director of alumni relations, is in Carter Center, Room 106, and Sandra Hottel, secretary for alumni and church relations, is in Carter 108. The most direct entrance is the westernmost door off of College Street.
The phone number remains 540-828-5451, and the fax number also is the same, 540-828-5780. The mailing address is Office of Alumni Relations, College Box 40, Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, VA 22812-1599. Come by for a visit!

BRIDGEWATER FUND PASSES HALF-WAY MARK
Thanks to all who have made a gift to the Bridgewater Fund so far this year. To date, we are 62 percent toward the $700,000 goal with 16.6 percent alumni participation (28 percent is this year's goal). If you have not yet made an annual gift, we are counting on you to make this year's Bridgewater Fund a success!

Follow the fund's progress and make an online credit card gift by visiting: www.bridgewater.edu and clicking on "Give to BC." Annual support of the Bridgewater Fund is one of the most important gifts you can make each year. Every gift, no matter the size, bolsters our participation rate and is used immediately to strengthen the BC educational experience.

DAY OF SHARING IS MARCH 3
The Bridgewater College Alumni Association encourages alumni and students to join together in service projects in their hometowns in a national BC Day of Sharing on March 3. If you would like to be involved, identify a project in your community - such as a soup kitchen, a Habitat for Humanity build, a needy family or a trail clean-up, for example - and let the alumni office know at alumnews@bridgewater.edu of your interest or project.

CAMDEN YARDS, HERE WE COME!
The Office of Alumni Relations has secured tickets for the Orioles game at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, against the Boston Red Sox and reserved the Garden Terrace for our annual picnic in Baltimore. Details and reservation information will be mailed in the spring.

HELP WITH SPECIAL PROJECTS
Do you have some special memories of Doc Jopson as a professor or coach or of Dr. Robert Burns when he taught here from 1962-67? Or how about some true, publishable tales from Wardo Hall? As director of special projects, Ellen Layman's first writing projects are focused on Jopson, Burns and Wardo. She will be compiling stories on some of the issues, personalities and places that have shaped the College.

Email your recollections to elayman@bridgewater.edu or send documents you would like to share to College Box 186, Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, VA 22812-1599.

Feel free to suggest other topics, too!
