CALL FOR ALUMNI AWARD NOMINATIONS The BC Alumni Association annually presents alumni awards during the spring Alumni Weekend (April 17-19, 2009). To nominate someone for an award, please review the criteria below and click here to submit your nomination online. Or you can email your name along with the name and class year of the nominee, the award they are being nominated for and supporting details that will assist in the decision process to alumnews@bridgewater.edu. Please make your nominations by August 15, 2008. The Distinguished Alumni Award was established to annually recognize one alumnus/a of Bridgewater College for his or her vocational and/or professional achievements. Attention is also given to recognition the individual has received in his or her given profession. The Young Alumni Award was established to annually recognize one or more alumnus/a of Bridgewater College, who has not yet reached the age of 40, for his or her vocational and/or professional achievements alumni. Attention is also given to recognition the individual has received in his or her given profession. In that regard, the award also is intended to identify and affirm the potential for even more remarkable achievements. The West Whitelow Humanitarian Award was established to annually recognize one alumnus/a who engages in volunteer acts of service that fall outside the requirements of their vocation. This award has been created to honor those who improve their communities - and we define community broadly to encompass global issues as well -- without consideration for remuneration or recognition. The Ripples Society Medal was established to annually recognize one or more members of the Ripples Society -- a 50 or more year alumnus of the College -- who has expressed loyalty to the college while demonstrating significant lifetime vocational or professional achievements and/or exemplary involvement in humanitarian endeavors.

SAVE THE DATE: EAGLES WE-HAUL ALUMNI SERVICE PROJECT The BC Class of 2012 will be moving to campus on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 8 a.m. until noon. As in years past, the BC Alumni Association will provide a warm welcome and some move-in muscle power as “Eagles We-Haul.” Mark your calendars and plan on joining us in this important service project as we help new students and their parents get all their “stuff” moved into the residence halls. AWAY FOOTBALL GAME BUS TRIPS Support your Eagles…and leave the driving to us! The Office of Alumni Relations will once again coordinate fan buses to away football games this fall. CAMPUS NEWS AND UPDATES BC CHORALE TOURS HUNGARY AND AUSTRIA The Bridgewater College Chorale recently took a 10-day concert tour in Hungary and Austria. The ensemble performed in prestigious venues in Budapest, Vienna and Salzburg. President and Mrs. Phillip Stone joined the group in Austria. The Chorale is directed by Dr. Jesse E. Hopkins, the Edwin L. Turner Distinguished Professor of Music at Bridgewater. The Chorale, selected by audition in the spring of the year, prepares two programs a year — a choreographed program of popular music and a sacred concert. ALUMNI CHOIR CONCERT – AUGUST 17, 2008 Mark your calendars now and plan on attending the free summer concert of the BC Alumni Choir on Sunday, August 17, at 3 p.m., at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren. The 26-member choir is made up of BC alumni ranging from class years in the ’70s all the way up to 2010. The choir rehearses on Monday evenings in June, July and early August. There will be several alumni conductors including: Joel Bremner, ’06; Jolene Flory, ’03; Holly Dickerson, ’99; Jonathan P. Emmons, ’05; Ryan Keebaugh, ’02; David L. Tate, ’71; and Jesse E. ATHLETIC NEWS AND UPDATES TURNER WINS SOUTH-SOUTHEAST REGION HONOR 06/02/2008 - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named Bridgewater College junior Nathan Turner the South/Southeast Region outdoor track and field athlete of the year. Turner won the javelin, shot put and hammer at the ODAC Championships. He qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the shot put with the second-best throw in the nation. Bridgewater College's Melvin Queen and Nathan Turner earned All-American honors at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship Meet hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Queen capped a stellar career on the track with a sixth-place finish in the 100 meters with a time of 10.80 seconds. Turner finished second in the shot put with a distance of 54 feet, 6.5 inches. TEETER, REMSCH, AND RADKE NAMED TO ALL-STATE TENNIS TEAMS 06/16/2008 - Bridgewater senior Hilary Teeter was named to the VaSID All-State College Division women’s tennis second team. SPECTOR NAMED BC’S NEW HEAD VOLLEYBALL COACH 05/23/2008 - Bridgewater College athletics director announced Friday that Greg Spector has been named the new women’s volleyball head coach. Spector becomes just the second coach in the program’s history. He succeeds Mary Frances Heishman, ’66 who started the volleyball program in 1975. Coach Heishman retired as volleyball coach following the 2007 season. Spector brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Bridgewater position. He has coached at various levels, including college, high school, club and international teams. Click here for complete story. VAN HORN NAMED NEW WOMEN’S SOCCER COACH 05/19/2008 - Bridgewater College athletics director Curt Kendall announced Monday that Michael Van Horn has been selected as the new women’s soccer head coach. Van Horn succeeds Kelly Gregory who has returned to her native Canada to pursue other professional opportunities. Van Horn brings a wealth of coaching experience at the high school, club and collegiate levels to the Eagles’ program. Click here for complete story. BROOKS BEGINS SECOND PRO BASEBALL SEASON 05/22/2008 - Former Bridgewater College standout Jono Brooks, ’07, is playing his second season with the Rockford Riverhawks in the Frontier League. The Riverhawks opened their season Wednesday with a 9-1 victory over River City. Brooks started at shortstop and hit No. 2 in the order. He was 2-for-5 with two runs batted in during the season-opener.
IV. ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT BC ALUMNA COMPETES IN MISS VIRGINIA PAGEANT On June 28, 2008, Melissa D. Albright, member of the Class of 2007, will be representing the greater Richmond area, as Miss Capital Region 2008 and will be competing for the title of Miss Virginia! She will be competing against 23 other girls in the Miss Virginia pageant. Her personal platform is Youth Civic Engagement Awareness and Advocacy. This year, the Miss Virginia Organization has allowed for family and friends to vote for their contestant of choice. The individual contestant with the most votes will go on to compete as part of the top 11. The pageant will be televised at 9 p.m. so check your local listings and be sure to vote for Melissa at: www.hostspring.com/poll.htm V.
