II. CAMPUS NEWS AND UPDATES
THE BRIDGEWATER FUND COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN!
Just 104 days are left until the end of our fiscal year, June 30, 2007. That means there is still time to help Bridgewater College meet this year's alumni participation goal of 28 percent by making a gift to the Bridgewater Fund. Meeting this goal is important because these gifts, regardless of size, are used for BC's highest priorities. Once there, you can use the blue Click & Pledge button to make your own gift and be counted with your classmates who have already made a gift. Thanks!
RECOGNIZE AND THANK TWO RETIRING BIOLOGY PROFESSORS
Two Biology Department professors, Dr. Michael Hill and Dr. Sarah Swank, are retiring at the end of this semester. Dr. Hill came to Bridgewater in 1972, and Dr. Swank came in 1981. Mail individual flat 8.5x11 pages to: Office of Alumni Relations, College Box 40, Bridgewater, VA 22812. Or email us your pages at alumnews@bridgewater.edu. BRIDGEWATER TEAMS UP WITH JMU AND EMU ON RESEARCH PROJECT
Three area schools are joining in a special research project that will give 12 college students an opportunity to conduct intensive research into molecular biology.
The project will link students at Bridgewater College, James Madison University and Eastern Mennonite University in studies of genetics, cell tissues, organisms and ecosystems. The project will commence May 21. "The goal is for each student to develop independence as a researcher by conducting his/her own research project, gaining skills in the laboratory, being exposed to the primary literature, participating in scientific presentations and discussions,"¯ said Terrie Rife, an assistant professor of biology at JMU. THE BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE CUPID PROFESSOR
Four BC students found out their professor will go above and beyond the call of duty in the name of love. Dr. Jeff Pierson is a professor in the communications studies department, but maybe he should add a doctorate in romance to his curriculum vitae. With his help, two seniors were able to pull off dual engagements during Bridgewater's annual Interterm. Dr. Pierson led a group of 50 students to London and Paris to study European media and culture. Just after Thanksgiving, Colin Owens, Jr. and Mark Hall, both seniors, came to Dr. Pierson's office to discuss the trip. He provided some helpful location suggestions for their proposals. To pull off the surprise, they said, he would need to guard the engagement rings. Pierson, who teaches their fiancées, Brittany Mears and Emily Price, thought the plan was inspired. "I thought it was a wonderful idea,"¯ he says. "And I thought Colin and Mark were really incredibly romantic to plan that far in advance."¯ Click here for complete story featured in the Rocktown Weekly.
III. ATHLETIC NEWS AND UPDATES
LOOK AT HER GO: SENIOR LEAVES BC WITH FOND MEMORIES
One of the toughest moments in Katy Herr Lovell's storybook basketball career came in the midst of a 44-point blowout. Her BC squad stormed out to a 33-1, first-half advantage over Hollins. With the game's outcome determined, Herr Lovell and the other starters left the game with seven minutes left. The 5-foot-4 senior normally comes out in favor of the backup point guard once the game is safely in hand. But this time was different. This time was Senior Night, the contest set apart to honor the upperclassmen in their final home game. When Herr Lovell left Nininger Hall's court, it wasn't just for that game. It was for good. "I wish she wasn't coming out," said Herr Lovell's teary-eyed mom, Sherry. "I want to see her play some more. It went too quickly." After rewriting the girls' basketball record books at Robert E. Lee High School, Herr Lovell has firmly cemented her name in Bridgewater's archives, too. Click here for complete story featured in Staunton's The News Leader.

He had the fastest time of the season in the ODAC in the 55 at 6:40 seconds and had the second-fastest time in the 200. He competed at the NCAA Championship meet in the 55 meters, but failed to make the finals. Click here for complete story.
