The annual luncheon for Bridgewater College alumni and friends during the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference will be held at noon Sunday, July 13, at the Marriott Richmond Downtown Hotel. The program will include a campus update from President Phillip C. Stone and an introduction by Dr. Stephen L. Longenecker, professor of history, of a new book published by the Church of the Brethren colleges in commemoration of the denomination’s 300th anniversary. The Merlin E. and Dorothy Faw Garber Award for Christian Service will be presented to Dr. Dale Ulrich, former provost, dean and professor of physics, emeritus, and his wife, Claire, and to Dan Rudy, a senior philosophy and religion major from Mt. Airy, Md. Shirley Fulcher Wampler, a member of the West Richmond Church of the Brethren, will preside at the luncheon. SAVE THE DATE: EAGLES WE-HAUL ALUMNI SERVICE PROJECT The BC Class of 2012 will be moving to campus on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 8 a.m. until noon. As in years past, the BC Alumni Association will provide a warm welcome and some move-in muscle power as “Eagles We-Haul.” Mark your calendars and plan on joining us in this important service project as we help new students and their parents get all their “stuff” moved into the residence halls. CHIEF JUSTICE URGES GRADS TO RETURN TO VISION OF FOUNDING FATHERS As Bridgewater College's graduating seniors and their families celebrated on the campus Sunday, May 11, the chief justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court the Hon. Frank J. Williams urged the 389 graduates to "guide this great land back to the vision of its Founders," in a speech centered on the legacy of Abraham Lincoln. Williams, who was appointed chief justice by Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Almond in January 2001 after serving for five years as associate justice of the Superior Court, is also one of the nation's leading scholars on the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. Click here for complete story. BC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESENTS STUDENT AWARDS The Bridgewater College Alumni Association recognized several students for their excellence within the campus community. Ashley Byrd received the 2008 Citizenship Award. Nathan Rittenhouse and Sophia Bonadies were presented the Alumni Association scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year, and James Funkhouser was awarded the Alumni Legacy Scholarship. The recipients of the annual scholarships are chosen on academic achievement, good citizenship, financial need and general merit. The awards were given at the annual Academic Awards Convocation on April 29. Click here for complete story. ART MAJORS SELL WORKS TO BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE Works by senior art majors Ashleigh E. Chadwick, Nolan Chase, Rebecca A. Downor, Lindsay Fagan and Virginia A. Williams have been purchased for Bridgewater College's permanent collection with the Paul M. and Betty Kline Student Art Purchase Award. Paul, who passed away in 2006, and Betty Kline are Bridgewater College graduates. He retired as professor of art in 1997 after 38 years on the faculty. She formerly served at the College as dean of women and psychology instructor. The award carries a cash prize for each recipient and the works are displayed on campus. Click here for complete story.
III. ATHLETIC NEWS AND UPDATES MEN’S TRACK TEAM WINS ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP! The Bridgewater College Men’s Track team ended Lynchburg College’s 10-year domination of Old Dominion Athletic Conference outdoor track and field as the Eagles won the ODAC Championship meet Saturday, April 19 at Roanoke College. The Eagles also earned two of the conference’s top honors as Shane Stevens was named Men’s Outdoor Track Coach of the Year and Damien Ward, a sophomore from Gordonsville, Va., was named Rookie of the Year. Saturday’s honor marked the seventh time Stevens has been named the men’s outdoor track coach of the year. He also received the top coaching honor this year during the indoor season. In the 100, Melvin Queen, a senior from Chesapeake, Va., made history when he became the first male athlete to win the 100 four straight years. Queen won Saturday’s event with a time of 11.00. The BC relay teams also turned in big efforts. The men’s 4x100 finished first with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 41.73 seconds. The runners were Queen, Tony Konate, a sophomore from Reston, Va., Brandon Copeland, a senior from Greensboro, N.C., and Tyler Beiler, a freshman from Ronks, Pa. The time was also a new championship meet record. In the field events, Nathan Turner, a junior from Elkton, Va., won the shot with a throw of 16.69 meters, a new championship meet record as well as a new overall ODAC record for the event. Bridgewater College qualified athletes in six events for the upcoming NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Individuals qualifying for national competition are Nathan Turner in the shot put, Melvin Queen in the 100, Brandon Copeland in the long jump and Courtney Hartman in the heptathlon. CLARK PLACES THIRD, SMITH PLACES FIFTH, AT THE NATIONAL EQUESTRIAN SHOW 05/09/2008 - Bridgewater College sophomore Lindsay Clark placed third at the IHSA National Show in Los Angeles. Bridgewater College's Cary Smith placed fifth. Clark finished third in a class of 10 riders in the Open Equitation Over Fences. Clark also finished fifth in a class of 10 riders in the Walk-Trot-Canter Equitation class. Click here for complete story. EAGLES FALL TO W&L IN CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH 04/27/2008 - The Bridgewater College women’s tennis team lost in the championship match of the ODAC tournament Sunday, losing 9-0 to the nation’s top ranked team, the Washington & Lee Generals. W&L won all singles matches in straight sets and also swept the three doubles matches. W&L is now 24-0 on the season while the Eagles finish with a 15-4 record with two of the losses coming against the Generals. Click here for complete story. BASEBALL ELIMINATED BY MARLINS, 5-3 04/26/2008 - Virginia Wesleyan defeated Bridgewater College, 5-3, Saturday to eliminate the Eagles from the ODAC baseball tournament. The Marlins took and early 5-1 lead, with just one of the five runs earned. Bridgewater scored twice in the fourth to pull within two runs. The Eagles finish the season with a 24-17-1 overall record. SOFTBALL FALLS TO VIRGINIA WESLEYAN 04/26/2008 - The Bridgewater softball team watched its season come to an end Saturday night as the Eagles dropped a 4-1 decision to Virginia Wesleyan. The Eagles finish the season with a 25-15 overall record. COPELAND SIGNS WITH CLEVELAND BROWNS Bridgewater College wide receiver Brandon Copeland, a senior from Greensboro, N.C., has signed a contract with NFL’s Cleveland Browns. Copeland signed as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of the NFL Draft on Sunday, April 27. His agent received calls from the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns. Copeland decided to sign with the Browns. Copeland, also an All-American track performer for the BC Eagles, caught 53 passes for 675 yards and nine touchdowns. He finished his career with 127 receptions for 1,924 yards and 21 touchdowns. He ranks No. 2 all-time at BC in receiving yards. Copeland is the second BC player in recent years to sign a pro contract. Jermaine Taylor, ’04, was in camp with both Green Bay and Tampa Bay and played one year in NFL Europe. Click on the following link for the full Daily News-Record article. IV. ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT SENATORS WARNER AND WEBB APPLAUD SENATE CONFIRMATION OF JUSTICE G. STEVEN AGEE, CLASS OF 1974 5/20/2008 - Senators John Warner (R-VA) and Jim Webb (D-VA) applauded the Senate's unanimous confirmation by a 96-0 vote today of Justice G. Steven Agee, ’74, to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, as he was on their list of recommendations. "Justice Agee's qualifications to serve on the Fourth Circuit are as impressive as any circuit-court nominee for whom I have voted in my 30 years in the Senate," said Warner. "In addition to his remarkable legal career, Justice Agee has been actively engaged in public service through the military, elected office, the state bench and other civic and volunteer causes. I appreciate the Senate's prompt consideration of this nominee." Justice Agee has served since 2003 as a justice on the Supreme Court of Virginia. Prior to that, from 2001 to 2003, he was a judge on the Court of Appeals of Virginia. A member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1982 to 1994, Justice Agee, a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, served on the Virginia Criminal Sentencing Commission, and is a member of the board of trustees at Bridgewater College.
