HOMECOMING 2008 – “ROCK YOUR CRIMSON AND GOLD!”

Plan on coming back to campus for Homecoming 2008 on Oct. 3-5. The RSVP deadline is fast approaching! Register by Sept. 26. Contact your friends and plan to be part of this fun-filled weekend. Here are just a few of the weekend’s highlights:

FRIDAY:

- Alumni and friends golf tournament

- Hall of Fame Banquet (Inductees: Douglas A. Coleman, ’73, Sydney Fultz John, ’97, Ray Lynn Heatwole, ’67, Dr. Beverly A. Marcum, ’68, Charles Russell Phillips, ’74.)

- Pep Rally, Bonfire and Fireworks

SATURDAY:

- Homecoming Festival (Live music, artisans, kettle corn, cotton candy, apple butter boil, balloons, face painting, give-aways for the kids, a moon bounce and orbotron ride.)

- Parade (Children may be a part of the parade if they are accompanied by an adult and pulled in a wagon. For details, contact Eagle Productions at 540-828-5325.)

- Class Reunion Picnic for Classes of 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, and 2003.

- Football game vs. Hampden-Sydney

- Ultimate Tailgate Party following the game

II. CAMPUS NEWS AND UPDATES

BC HIRES NEW VP FOR INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT
Beverly S. Butterfield of New Market, Va., has accepted the position of vice president for institutional advancement at Bridgewater College, effective Oct. 1. Butterfield, a 1979 graduate of Bridgewater College, has held a faculty position with the Virginia Tech Extension Service since 1979. Most recently, she served as the director of the northwest district for Virginia Tech Extension. Butterfield, whose achievements include receiving Bridgewater College's Young Alumnus Award in 1992, the Fauquier Business Woman of the Year Award and the Glen Mitchell Consumer Education Award, attended James Madison University in 1980 and earned her master's degree from Virginia Tech in 1996.

NEW P. BUCKLEY MOSS PRINT AVAILABLE IN OCTOBER

Nationally renowned artist P. Buckley Moss of Waynesboro has produced a painting that features three Bridgewater College landmarks – Memorial Hall, Flory Hall and the McKinney Center for Science and Mathematics. Prints of the painting will be available beginning Homecoming Weekend, Oct. 3-5. Prints also may be purchased online at www.BridgewaterAlumni.com beginning Oct 3. There are two versions available; a standard print for $125, and a deluxe print that includes the College seal for $250, plus sales tax and shipping. For further information, please call 828-5680. CHANTICLEER RETURNS TO BC TO GIVE LYCEUM

Called "the world's reigning male chorus" by The New Yorker and named 2008 Ensemble of the Year by Musical America, Chanticleer will present a lyceum at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 in the Carter Center for Worship and Music at Bridgewater College. Tickets for lyceums are $13 for adults and $10 for seniors, children and non-Bridgewater College students. Tickets are only available at the door one hour before the start of the performance.

III. ATHLETIC NEWS AND UPDATES

BURGESS NAMED HEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH
09/09/2008 - Don Burgess, a veteran Division I assistant coach and a native of Harrisonburg, Va., has been named the new head men’s basketball coach at Bridgewater College. Curt Kendall, the College’s Director of Athletics, introduced Burgess during a Thursday afternoon press conference at Nininger Hall on the Bridgewater campus. Burgess takes the reins of the Bridgewater program after serving as an assistant coach at High Point University for the past three seasons. Burgess succeeds Bill Leatherman, who retired in July after 23 seasons as the Eagles’ head men’s basketball coach. Click here for complete story.

VaSID HONORS SIX EAGLES ON ACADEMIC TEAM
08/14/2008 - Six Bridgewater College student-athletes received recognition on the VaSID All-Academic team released Thursday. Named from Bridgewater were Drew Elkins (baseball, athletic training), Brian Remsch (men’s tennis, business administration), Nathan Rittenhouse (men’s track and cross country, physics), Hilary Teeter (women’s tennis, communications studies), Jeff Highfill (football, mathematics) and Brittney Wittmer (volleyball, biology). The Virginia Sports Information Directors honored 222 collegiate student-athletes for their performances both in the classroom and in competition as the organization selected the 2007-08 VaSID Academic All-State Team. The 222 athletes represent the largest group the organization has honored with the awards.

RIDERS TAKE TOP HONORS AT SWVHJA SHOW

09/14/2008 - Three Bridgewater College riders took home top honors Saturday at the annual Southwest Virginia Hunter/Jumper Association show held at the Bridgewater College Equestrian Center. The show featured a record-breaking number of entries. BC riders excelled in the medal classes with three winners. Lindsay Barrett won the Randolph Medal; Patti Ann Thornton won the Oak Ridge Medal; and Katelyn Mancini won the SWVHJA Adult Medal.

SPALDING RECEIVES SECOND STRAIGHT ODAC HONOR

09/15/2008 - Bridgewater College senior Brandon Spalding has been named the ODAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the second consecutive week. Spalding finished 11th overall at the JMU Invitational to pace the Eagles with a time of 26:37.70. Spalding was the second Division III runner to finish. His effort helped lead the Eagles to a fourth-place team finish.

AWAY FOOTBALL GAME BUS TRIPS
Support your Eagles…and leave the driving to us! The Office of Alumni Relations will once again coordinate fan buses to away football games this fall. IV. ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

BC ALUMNUS UMPIRES LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Mike Baker, Class of 1998, was selected as the plate umpire for the Little League World Series Championship Game on Sunday, August 24, 2008, in Williamsport, Pa. The Championship game was between Mexico "Matamoros Little League" and the West Team "Waipio Little League" from Waipahu, Hawaii. Baker called 13 games, including three at home plate, during the Aug. 15-24 event for 12-year-olds. Representing the South, he was one of 15 umpires chosen world-wide. The umpiring crew included 12 Americans and one each from Asia, Latin America and Canada.
