Live or winter in the
Florida area? Then you'll want to plan on joining us at an alumni and friends
regional luncheon in Sebring, on Saturday, January 26, from 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.
at Homer's Original Smorgasbord. Enjoy a buffet lunch while reconnecting with
your alma mater and rekindling your school spirit. President Phillip C. Stone
will be our special guest and will deliver campus updates. For more information

ALUMNI
VOLUNTEER SERVICE = "DAY OF SHARING"
The
BC Alumni Association encourages alumni, students and friends to join together
in volunteer service projects in their hometowns in a national BC "Day of
Sharing" on Saturday, March 8. As a service volunteer, you will provide
valuable help to the various agencies as well as build good will by
representing the College in various communities. If you would like to be
involved, mark your calendar now and identify an agency or project in your
community that you can volunteer with. For volunteer opportunities and details

AREA ALUMNI & FRIENDS EVENT - MARCH 27, 2008
Alumni,
parents and friends in the Winchester, Va., area, mark your calendars now for
an alumni reception on Thursday, March 27, at the home of Ted ('79) and Faye
Barker, 602 Sterling Drive, Winchester. Come reconnect with college and other
BC alumni and friends while enjoying appetizers, campus updates from President
Phillip C. Stone and head football coach, Mike Clark, as well as door prizes
and more! Plans are in the works, and more details will follow. Watch your

MARK
YOUR CALENDARS FOR ALUMNI WEEKEND: APRIL 18-19, 2008
If
you don't already have Alumni Weekend on your calendar, mark it now - April
18-19!
Just
a few of the highlights:

The Class of 1958 will mark its 50-year reunion and be inducted into the
Ripples Society on Friday, April 18.
-
Reunion luncheons are scheduled Saturday, April 19, for the Classes of 1933,
1938, 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, 1963 and 1968.
-
At the Alumni Banquet on Saturday evening, April 19, the annual BC Alumni
Association alumni awards will be presented.
A
full schedule of events and registration form will be mailed out in March so be
watching your mailbox for it.
II. CAMPUS NEWS AND UPDATES
BRIDGEWATER
SEEKS DIRECTOR OF THE BRIDGEWATER FUND
The
Office of Institutional Advancement is seeking a Director of the Bridgewater
Fund. The Director of the Bridgewater Fund directs and coordinates Annual
Giving initiatives for Bridgewater College. He/she is responsible for
overseeing all aspects of the Bridgewater Fund, including goal setting,
marketing, solicitation and staff management. He/she
works to develop and cultivate relationships with alumni and friends of the
College capable of making gifts to the Bridgewater Fund. He/she generally
solicits gifts from individuals in the $1,000 + range for the Bridgewater Fund.

FORMER
GOV. WARNER VISITS BC
Former
Virginia Gov. Mark R. Warner visited students at Bridgewater College Jan. 11,
as part of his Hometown Days tour. During the tour, which began Jan. 10 in
Luray, Warner revisited some of the major projects and initiatives he launched
in the area during his four years as governor from 2002 to 2006.Warner spoke to
students in a political science class, then spent an hour with faculty in the
Kline Campus Center exploring the success of BC's Personal Development
Portfolio.
PRESIDENT
STONE ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENTS, PROMOTIONS AND TENURE
Dr.
Phillip Stone has announced the following appointment, promotions and tenure. Dr.
Edward W. Huffstetler, professor of English, has been named associate dean
for academic affairs, effective July 1. He succeeds Dr. Robert Andersen,
the W. Harold Row Professor of International Studies, who will be returning to
full-time teaching. Being awarded tenure and being promoted to associate
professor are Dr. James D. Bowling of the mathematics department and Dr.
Scott H. Suter of the English department. Charles W. Hale IV,
assistant professor of health and exercise science, has been awarded tenure.

BC
FINANCIAL AID GURU TO RETIRE
Vern Fairchilds, director of
financial aid, has announced his retirement effective June 30. A 1968 alumnus
of Bridgewater College, Fairchilds began his first job at BC on July 1, 1969
and has faithfully served the College for 39 years. Upon learning of his
retirement plans, President Phillip Stone commented that "during his nearly 40
years at Bridgewater College, Vern has not only been a loyal and hardworking
colleague but has clearly established himself as the most knowledgeable college
administrator in Virginia on student financial aid matters. His careful
attention to legal nuances, his work ethic, his passion for enabling students
to get their college education and his personal integrity have made him
invaluable to the College. We shall miss having him as a member of the staff,
but, with deep gratitude for his many years of service to the
College, we extend to him our best wishes for a happy and healthy
retirement."

ATHLETIC NEWS AND UPDATES
GANTT,
COTTON NAMED TO ALL-STATE FIRST TEAM
12/24/07 -Bridgewater College placed two players on the All-State college
division football team selected by The Roanoke Times. Anthony Cotton, a senior
offensive lineman, was named to the first-team offense while junior defensive
end Travis Gantt was named to the first-team defense. The Eagles also placed
two players on the second team. Senior running back Phillip Carter was selected
to the second-team offense and senior Scott Ruebush was named to the
second-team defense as the punter. Click here for complete

EAGLES RALLY PAST
LYNCHBURG
01/13/2008 - Bridgewater College rallied from a 10-point second-half
deficit Sunday afternoon to pick up a key conference road victory over the
Lynchburg College Hornets, 85-82. Michael Oblitey led five Eagles in double
figures with 22 points. Oblitey made 8-of-11 shots, including 6-of-7 from
3-point range. Josh Fox added 19 points, followed by Andrew Cathlin with 11 and
D.J. Billups and Dominic Trawick with 10 each. The Eagles shot 69.6 percent
from the floor in the second half as the team made 16-of-23 shots. Bridgewater
hit 10-of-19 attempts from beyond the arc. The Eagles are now 8-2 overall and
3-1 in the ODAC. The Hornets are 2-8 and 0-4 in the conference. Click here for complete

CLARK
ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO COACHING STAFF
01/13/2008
- Bridgewater College head football coach Michael Clark has announced
several changes to his coaching staff for the 2008 season. All the changes thus
far deal with shifting responsibilities among the current staff members. Clark
will relinquish the role of defensive coordinator and return to coaching the
team's quarterbacks. Joe Soltis will remain as offensive coordinator and
will coach tight ends. Jack Johnson will continue to coach the defensive line
and will assume the role of defensive coordinator. Stephon Healey will
switch to the defensive side of the ball and will coach the linebackers. Healey
also has been promoted to the position of assistant head coach. Running
back coach Bill Shirley is leaving the staff to spend more time with his
quarterbacks camp that he runs with his son Rob, a former quarterback at

FORMER
BC STUDENT WINS FIRST AMENDMENT MOOT COURT COMPETITION
11/6/2007
- Recently a group of Regent law students competed at the Fourteenth Annual
Burton D. Wechsler First Amendment Moot Court Competition at American
University in Washington D. C. Third-year law student Ashleigh Kingery, a BC
alumna from the class of 2005, along with her teammates, Rich Wenner and Heath
Sabin, took first place after six rounds of oral argument. The Wechsler
Competition brought various national and international law schools together to
argue a specially formulated problem concerning the Establishment Clause of the
First Amendment and the right of expressive association. Competitors showcased
their oral advocacy skills before venerable judges, prominent attorneys, and
First Amendment scholars. Ashleigh Kingery, '05, was a sociology/political
