IV. ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

"˜ERNIE' GETS BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE CROWDS FIRED UP!

Grinning and wide-eyed, Ernie the Eagle makes quite a loveable figure on the sidelines at Bridgewater College football games. In the tradition of college mascots, this incarnation of Ernie doesn't want to reveal his name, but gave us some insight into the man behind the mask. Ernie, 21, a senior majoring in chemistry, is originally from Summersville, W.Va. Tall and skinny, Ernie is an animated story teller, something that's helped as he exaggerates every movement in his Eagle costume. He grew up in 4-H - his mom was an extension agent in West Virginia. He was involved in student leadership and other youth development projects. "4-H is probably what got me out of my shell the most," he said. It was through 4-H that his older sister learned of Bridgewater College, eventually leading him there, too. At first, his sister's attendance at BC made it an unattractive prospect. But a full scholarship was just the persuasion he needed. And once there, Ernie wasted no time getting involved. Before his days as Ernie, the Bridgewater mascot, he played in the pep band. He's also in the chemistry club, the Ultimate Frisbee club and is a student Ambassador. "I [have] lots of school spirit," he said. Although he still considers himself a shy person, that's not exactly his reputation. "I just love school," he says. "As long as I can keep going to school, I'm happy." So for now, Ernie's still on the sideline, shaking his tail feathers. http://www.rocktownweekly.com/rocktown/profile.php?AID=1735

If you have an interesting story idea to spotlight the achievements of an alumnus/a or perhaps an interesting alumni human interest piece, please email it to wesbensh@bridgewater.edu for possible inclusion in an upcoming issue.
