The Bridgewater College women's basketball team dropped its second straight non-conference game on its homecourt, falling to the Ferrum College Panthers, 78-59, Tuesday night..Despite shooting only 30.8percent from the field in the first half, the Eagles trailed by only 12, 38-26 at the half. BC cut the lead to seven with just more than 12 minutes to play in the second half but could get no closer the rest of the way as Ferrum College extended the lead back to double figures and capitalized on BC's inability to handle the basketball and poor shooting. The Eagles finished the game with 28 turnovers and shot 31.7 percent from the floor, including a 2-fo-15 effort from three-point range. Senior Rebecca Henderson led the Eagles with 13 points and seven rebounds. Senior Jennifer Saunders and sophomore Emileigh Lambert contributed 12 and 10 points respectively. The visiting Panthers were led in both scoring and rebounding by junior Tonya Wright with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Visiting Mary Washington University defeated the Eagles 76-61 in non-conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Nininger Hall. Mary Washington University came into the contest nationally ranked in the top 30 in 2 pre-season polls.Bridgewater College trailed at the half 39-29, and stayed within striking distance for the majority of the game, but couldn't overcome a cold-shooting second half in which the Eagles shot only 22.7 percent from the floor. The Eagles also finished with 25 turnovers. BC had a slim edge in rebounding, 38-37, and connected on 26-of-33 free throws for the contest. The Eagles were led by sophomore Jordan Burkholder with 20 points, including a 12-for-14 effort from the free throw line, and senior Rebecca Henderson with 10 points and eight rebounds. Mary Washington University was paced in scoring with four players in double figures including freshman Katie Wimmer with 20 points, senior Ashton Mitchell with 13 points, senior Katy Larson with 12 points and freshman Jenna McRae with 10 points. | The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its 2008-09 preseason women's basketball coaches poll on Thursday morning at the conference's media day held at the Salem Civic Center and the Eagles were tabbed fifth out of the league's 11 teams. Randolph-Macon tops the poll after receiving 10 first-place votes and 119 points. Lynchburg followed closely behind in second place with 105 points, while Roanoke (94), Virginia Wesleyan (83), Bridgewater (75), Emory & Henry (63), Guilford (57), Eastern Mennonite (50), Washington and Lee (42), Randolph (27) and Hollins (11) rounded out the polling. |
Bridgewater College freshman Jordan Burkholder was named to the VaSID College Division all-state women's basketball team released Wednesday.Burkholder, the ODAC Freshman of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player at the ODAC Tournament, led the Eagles in scoring this past season with 14.8 average. She also averaged 5.0 rebounds and led the team in steals with 97 and assists with 75. |

Bridgewater College senior Jessica Timberlake played in the ODAC-USA South Senior Challenge on Sunday at North Carolina Wesleyan College.The game features the top senior players from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the USA South Athletic Conference. Timberlake scored eight points, tied for the team lead in rebounds with six and finished with six steals in 24 minutes of action for the ODAC. USA South won the women's game, 82-74. The College of New Jersey jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and never trailed en route to a 65-52 victory over Bridgewater College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament played Friday at the University of Mary Washington. New Jersey stretched its early lead to double digits and led 16-4 on Sara Best’s jumper with 12:09 left in the first half. That was the Lions’ biggest lead of the first half as the Eagles withstood the early onslaught and trailed by just eight at the half when Jordan Burkholder hit 2-of-3 free throws with five seconds left, cutting the Lions’ lead to 31-23. New Jersey outscored the Eagles 13-4 in the first five minutes of the second half to take a 43-27 lead. Once again, the Eagles refused to go away and they battled to stay within striking distance. Bridgewater finally got the lead back to single digits when Jordan Burkholder connected from 3-point land to pull the Eagles to within seven, 46-39, with 9:32 left to play. Hillary Klimowicz scored after an offensive rebound to push the lead to nine, but Kristin Bosserman answered with a layup, making the score 48-41 with 8:32 left. The Eagles had a chance to cut further into the deficit following a Lions’ turnover, but Bosserman missed a 3-pointer and New Jersey tallied at other end on a 3-pointer by Nicole Diaz to put the Lions on top 51-41 with 7:45 remaining. The New Jersey lead remained in double figures the rest of the way as they closed out the contest with a 61-48 final margin of victory. Burkholder lead the Eagles with team highs of 15 points and six rebounds. Senior Jessica Timberlake added 13 points in her final game as an Eagle. Best scored 19 points to lead New Jersey and Klimowicz, the Lion’s 6-foot-3 center, finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Bridgewater College will charter two buses to Fredericksburg on Friday for the Eagles NCAA tournament game against the College of New Jersey. A student bus will load at 12:45 in front of Nininger Hall on Friday. This bus is available for Bridgewater College students only. There are 30 spaces available on a first come, first serve basis. There is no charge to ride the bus, but there is a $3 charge for the game ticket that must be paid when you sign up. If the Eagles win Friday there will be a student bus going back to Fredericksburg on Saturday for the 5 p.m. game. Sign up at the KCC information desk to reserve your seat. The Office of Alumni Relations is planning a fan bus trip on Friday and another on Saturday if the Eagles win the Friday game. Cost of the Friday trip is $25 plus cost of a game ticket. Ticket prices are $6/adult, $3/Senior (55 and up), $3 student, 2-and-under free. Call the Office of Alumni Relations by noon Thursday to reserve your seat. The phone number is 540-828-5451. Bridgewater will face The College of New Jersey in the first round of the NCAA tournament on March 7 in Fredericksburg, Va., at the University of Mary Washington.Tipoff is set for 4:00 pm, with tickets costing $6 for adults and $3 for students, children, and senior citizens. Children under the age of two are free. Details of this weekend's tournament, including information on advance ticket sales will be announced late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Bridgewater College became the first No. 6 seed to win the ODAC tournament when the Eagles edged No. 1 seed Virginia Wesleyan, 57-56, to win the ODAC championship Sunday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center. With the victory, the Eagles secured the ODAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Eagles will find out their destination and first round opponent late Sunday night or early Monday morning. The victory completed an improbable run to the title that saw the Eagles knock the No. 3, No. 2 and No. 1 seed in consecutive games. Sunday’s championship game was tightly contested throughout with the biggest lead being seven points early in the second half by the Marlins. The Eagles wiped out that seven-point deficit with an 8-0 run to take a 36-35 lead with 14:21 left in the game. From that point the two teams were never separated by more than one possession until the 5:20 mark. Trailing by one Jessice Timberlake hit a 3-pointer to put the Eagles up by two and Rebecca Henderson added a short jumper, giving the Eagles a 53-49 lead. The Marlins responded with layups by Tonia Jones and Bryttani Payton to tie the score at 53-53 with 3:08 left to play. The Marlins regained the lead when Heather Phillips converted an offensive rebound into a three-point play, making the score 56-53 with 1:24 left in the game. Timberlake hit two free throws to make it a one-point game and the Eagles regained possession when Henderson rebounded a missed shot with 59 seconds left. Timberlake then gave the Eagles the lead when she hit a 12-footer just before the shot clock expired, putting the Eagles on top, 57-56. Bridgewater then had to dodge a couple more opportunities by the Marlins. Tonia Jones missed a jumper and Timberlake gathered in the rebound and was fouled with 5.9 seconds left to play. The Bridgewater senior missed the free throw and Virginia Wesleyan’s Taylor Love grabbed the rebound, giving the Marlins one last chance. Forced to go the length of the court, the Marlins navigated the distance and got the ball to Love who was open along the baseline. Her 15-footer at the buzzer glanced off the front of the rim, allowing the Eagles to escape with the one-point victory. Jordan Burkholder and Timberlake scored 14 points each to lead a balanced attack. Henderson just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Kristin Bosserman added seven points and Nikki Sydnor added six points and eight boards. Phillips scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Marlins. Bridgewater pulled off its second upset of the ODAC Women’s Basketball Tournament as the Eagles defeated the No. 2 seed, Randolph-Macon, 70-64, Saturday afternoon in semifinal action at the Salem Civic Center. With the victory, the Eagles advance to the ODAC Championship game where they will meet top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at 1.. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 20-6 lead in the first eight minutes of play, but the Eagles weathered the early onslaught and by half, Bridgewater had trimmed the lead to six points, 31-25. Randolph-Macon scored the first five points of the second half to take an 11-point lead, but once again the Eagles hung tough and used a quick 6-0 spurt to cut the lead to five, 36-31. The Eagles finally caught the Yellow Jackets when Kristin Bosserman knocked down a 3-pointer to tie the score 47-47 with 12:03 left in the game. With 9:57 left in the game, the Eagles took their first lead of the second-half on a Jordan Burkholder layup. The Eagles built the lead to seven, 65-58, with 4:32 left on Jessica Timberlake’s 3-pointer, but the Yellow Jackets answered, outscoring the Eagles, 7-1, to pull within one point, 65-64, with 2:09 to play. The Yellow Jackets had possession with a chance to take the lead, but Amanda Hiltunen missed a jumper and the Eagles controlled the rebound with 1:20 to play. Burkholder then missed a 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down, but Nikki Sydnor grabbed the offensive rebound to keep possession for the Eagles. Burkholder then scored on a layup, giving BC a three-point lead with 41 seconds left. The Yellow Jackets misfired again and Bosserman scored on a layup to make it a five-point lead, 69-64 with 24 seconds left. Bosserman added 1-of-2 from the foul line with 14 seconds to go for the final point in the upset victory. Jennifer Saunders scored 17 points to pace four Eagles in double figures. Bosserman scored 14 points, followed by Timberlake with 12 and Burkholder with 11. Sydnor led the Eagles with eight rebounds as BC battled the Yellow Jackets to a virtual standoff on the boards. Bridgewater College defeated Eastern Mennonite, 51-47, Thursday night in the opening round of the ODAC women’s basketball tournament at the Salem Civic Center.The Eagles led by 10 on several occasions in the second half, the latest at 45-35. The Royals cut that margin to one point, 45-44, with 1:07 left in the game. Jessica Timberlake broke the BC scoring drought with a clutch jumper to give the Eagles a three-point lead. After Melissa Lewis hit 1-of-2 free throws for EMU to cut the lead to one with :27 left, Nikki Sydnor hit two key free throws to push the lead back to three. Jordan Burkholder then came up with one of her six steals and added on two free throws to clinch the victory for the Eagles. Burkholder led the Eagles with 14 points. Bridgewater College freshman Jordan Burkholder was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year at the conference's annual awards banquet Wednesday night at the Salem Civic Center. Burkholder averaged 15.0 points per game to lead the Eagles and rank No. 5 in the conference. She was first in the ODAC in steals at 3.5 each time out, ranking 21st nationally, and was also fifth in the league from the charity stripe at 79.5-percent. She led the Eagles in scoring on 16 different occasions, surpassing the 20-point total six times. She notched a season-high 24 points on two different occasions. She also received honorable mention on the All-ODAC team. Randolph-Macon College sophomore center Molly Ariail was named the ODAC Player of the Year and Virginia Wesleyan's Stephany Dunmyer was selected as the ODAC Coach of the Year. Randolph-Macon guard Amanda Hiltunen was tabbed the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and Randolph College was awarded the sport’s team sportsmanship honor. Bridgewater College closed out its regular season Friday night with a 71-25 victory over Hollins University. Kristin Bosserman and Lauren Daniel scored 12 points each to lead the Eagles. Roanoke College erased a six-point deficit in the final seven minutes Monday night to defeat Bridgewater College, 52-49, in ODAC women’s basketball action. The Eagles led 44-38 on a layup by Jordan Burkholder with 7:15 left in the game. Roanoke then cut the lead to two on layups by Torri Bridge and Caitlyn Long before Burkholder scored again to give the Eagles a 46-42 lead with 5:33 to play. Layups by Sara Keller and Jordan Gholson tied the score for the Maroons with 4:10 to play and two foul shots by Long put Roanoke on top 48-46 with 3:53 remaining. Another layup by Gholson made it a four-point game before Rebecca Henderson made 1-of-2 free throws for BC to pull the Eagles within three, 50-47 with 2:14 left. A short jumper by Nikki Sydnor cut the lead to one but Jaleesa Osborne hit two free throws with 10 seconds on the clock to give the Maroons the 52-49 lead. Jessica Timberlake’s long 3-pointer at the buzzer was wide as the Maroons escaped with the victory. Burkholder flirted with a triple-double for the Eagles, finishing with 21 points, nine rebounds and eight steals. Sydnor recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Marlins kept the lead in double figures for most of the second half, leading by as many as 18 points. The Eagles did not cut the lead under 10 until Jordan Burkholder hit two free throws with 3:27 left in the game, making the score 62-53. Bridgewater then had three possessions with a chance to cut further into the deficit, but the Eagles were unable to connect at the offensive end. Tonia Jones led the Marlins with 18 points as she hit 8-of-13 shots from the floor. Heather Phillips connected on 7-of-12 shots to finish with 15 points. The BC team will show its support on Feb. 16 when the Eagles host the Marlins at Nininger Hall. Game time is 4:00 p.m. All fans attending the game are encouraged to wear pink to support the cause and will be admitted to the game free. All fans are also encouraged to make a donation to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The fund is a 501 c(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer to the fight against cancer through raising money for scientific research, assisting the under-served and unifying people for a common cause. Kay Yow, North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach, is a past president and founding member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), and a galvanizing voice for the Association. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and is currently battling the disease for the third time. |
Randolph-Macon outscored the Bridgewater College Eagles 13-6 in the final four minutes to pull out a 68-64 ODAC victory Tuesday night. The Eagles took the lead, 58-55, on Kristin Bosserman’s 3-pointer with 4:23 left in the game, but the Eagles did not score again until Bosserman hit another 3-pointer with just 29 seconds remaining. During that stretch, the Yellow Jackets scored eight straight points to gain control of the contest. Jordan Burkholder and Bianca Booker scored 13 points each to lead the Eagles. Bridgewater College outscored Emory & Henry College 38-19 in the second half Saturday afternoon to pull away for a 59-43 victory in ODAC women’s basketball action. E&H led by three, 24-21, at the half, but the Eagles defense put the clamps on the Wasps in the final 20 minutes. E&H shot just 20.7 percent in the second half, making just 6-of-29 shots from the floor. For the game, the Wasps shot 28.8 percent. The Eagles’ also struggled at the offensive end, making just 32.8 percent of their shots. BC did make 20-0f-24 free throws (83.3 percent). Jordan Burkholder led the Eagles with 18 points. Burkholder struggled from the floor, shooting just 4-of-17, but she was a perfect 10-of-10 at the foul line. Kristin Bosserman also reached double figures with 11 points. Rebecca Henderson led the Eagles on the boards with eight rebounds and she also blocked six shots. Burkholder added six rebounds and five steals and point guard Jessica Timberlake played the entire 40 minutes without committing a turnover. Sarah Petty paced the E&H attack with 14 points. Bridgewater College overcame a terrible shooting night to escape with a 63-52 victory over the Guilford College Quakers in ODAC women’s basketball action Friday night at Nininger Hall. Bridgewater shot just 30.8 percent form the floor for the game, just better than the 30.4 percent put up by the Quakers. The Eagles did hit 18-of-24 free throws while Guilford connected on just 6-of-13 at the line. Guilford stayed in the game from 3-point range as the Quakers hit 12-of-28 from long range. The Quakers made just five baskets inside the arc the entire game. After the teams played to a 23-23 first half tie, Guilford grabbed an early six-point, 35-29, lead in the second half on consecutive 3-pointers by Katie Dailey (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale). The Quakers stayed out front until Emileigh Lambert (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) hit two free throws to tie the score at 37-37. Bridgewater then regained the lead, 39-37, on a layup by Bianca Booker (Blackstone, VA/Nottoway) with 10:09 to play. The Eagles led the rest of the way, but the Quakers stayed within six points until 1:45 left in the game. Kristin Bosserman (Staunton, VA/Riverheads) led the Eagles with 18 points. Bridgewater trailed by just three at the half, 35-32, but Mary Washington shot 62.5 percent in the second half to outscore the Eagles 46-24 to pull away for the victory. Jordan Burkholder led the Eagles with 15 points and nine rebounds, both team highs. Nikki Sydnor scored eight points and Kristin Bosserman and Jessica Timberlake added seven each. Bridgewater College bounced back from a Friday night loss at Lynchburg to take a 66-56 victory Saturday at Randolph College. The Eagles shot 45.6 percent from the field and evened their record at 9-9 overall and 7-7 in the ODAC. Jordan Burkholder led the Eagles with 21 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Nikki Sydnor and Kristin Bosserman scored 12 points each. Lynchburg took advantage of a cold shooting night by the Bridgewater College Eagles to take a 66-59 ODAC victory Friday night.The Eagles took 29 more shots than the Hornets, but made just 27.6 of their attempts on the night. Jordan Burkholder scored 15 points, but made just 4-of-21 shots. Burkholder also grabbed seven rebounds and picked up six steals. Bianca Booker added 12 points and Nikki Sydnor scored 10.. Conference-leading Randolph-Macon College outscored Bridgewater College 12-3 in the final two minutes Tuesday night to escape with a 61-53 victory over the Eagles at Nininger Hall. Bridgewater scored the first six points of the game and never trailed in the first half. In fact Randolph-Macon did not lead until Nicole Childress knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Yellow Jackets a 40-37 lead with 6:44 left in the game. The Eagles answered with a 3-pointer by Jordan Burkholder to tie the score and then regained the lead, 42-40, on Nikki Sydnor’s layup with 5:50 remaining. The Yellow Jackets tied the score on Marta Merkel’s jumper and then went on top, 43-40, when Jess Shifflett hit 1-of-2 at the line. Randolph-Macon held the upper hand until a layup by Rebecca Henderson gave BC a 50-49 lead with 2:01 to play. Molly Arial scored the next five points to put the Yellow Jackets out front to stay, and down the stretch the visitors hit 7-of-8 free throws to clinch the victory. Burkholder was the only Bridgewater player in double-figures with a game-high 24 points. Sydnor score eight points and pulled down 10 boards while Henderson added eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Arial scored 16 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to lead the Yellow Jackets. Jessica Timberlake hit 1-of-2 free throws with two seconds left in the game Saturday afternoon as the Eagles escaped Nininger Hall with a 50-49 victory over Washington & Lee in ODAC women’s basketball action. The Eagles led by five, 48-43, with just 42 seconds left in the game, but Kristen Krouchick knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the lead to two, 48-46, with 29 seconds on the clock. Timberlake missed the front end of a one-and-one but the Generals turned the ball over and fouled Timberlake again. This time she made 1-of-2 foul shots with 16 seconds left, giving BC a 49-46 lead. Amanda Kane hit a long 3-pointer with five seconds remaining to tie the score, but the Generals fouled Timberlake in the backcourt and she made the second of a two-shot foul for the winning point. Timberlake scored 11 points while Emileigh Lambert and Nikki Sydnor scored 10 points each for the Eagles. Rebecca Henderson finished with eight blocked shots for the Eagles. Kane scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead W&L and Felice Herman added 12 points. Bridgewater College cut a 10-point lead down to one in the final four minutes, but Eastern Mennonite hit two clutch free throws in the final seconds to hold on for a 68-65 ODAC victory Tuesday.EMU took a 65-55 lead with with 3:43 left on Ebony Dennis’ 3-pointer. The Eagles then hit the Royals with a 10-1 run to pull within one. Jordan Burkholder scored six points during the rally and Rebecca Henderson’s layup made the score 66-65 with 30 seconds left. Carolyn Riley and Ebony Dennis each made 1-of-2 foul shots in the closing seconds to help clinch the Royals’ victory. Burkholder led the Eagles with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field. Jessica Timberlake added 11 points for Bridgewater. The Bridgewater College Eagles finished off their long weekend road trip with their second straight victory by defeating Guilford, 77-68, Saturday.The Eagles trailed by five with just less than nine minutes left in the second half, but an 11-0 run put the Eagles out front to stay. Buckets by Bianca Booker and Jordan Burkholder pulled BC to within one and a layup by Jessica Timberlake gave the Eagles the lead. Rebecca Henderson added an inside hoop before Jennifer Saunders capped the run with a 3-pointer, giving the Eagles a 66-60 lead with five minutes left. Down the stretch, the Eagles made 11-of-12 foul shots to maintain the upper hand. Burkholder led four players in double figures with 24 points. Kristin Bosserman led the Eagles with a game-high 19 points. Bosserman hit 7-of-13 shots, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Jordan Burkholder scored 13 points and Rebecca Henderson added 12. Bridgewater College jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the first seven minutes Saturday afternoon en route to a 75-62 victory over the Lynchburg College Hornets in ODAC women’s basketball action. Jordan Burkholder opened the scoring for the Eagles with a 3-pointer and Kristin Bosserman added a pair of hoops, giving BC a quick 7-0 lead. The Hornets’ first point came on a free throw by Kristina Darby and Lynchburg’s first field goal was a jumper by Brittany Dahn at the 14:11. Bridgewater’s Bianca Booker followed Dahn’s jumper with a short baseline jumper to give the Eagles a 17-3 lead with 13:17 left in the first half. The Hornets battled back and cut the lead to eight, 28-20, on a layup by Tamara Snead, but layups by Booker and Sammy Mizerak pushed the Bridgewater margin back to double digits, 32-20. A jumper by Dahn trimmed the margin to seven in the final minute of the half, but Emileigh Lambert answered with a driving layup to give BC a 35-26 lead at the break. The Eagles opened the second half with an 10-0 run, forcing the Hornets to play catch-up the rest of the way. Jessica Timberlake’s 3-point play opened the second-half scoring and a layup by Nikki Sydnor made the score 40-26. A 3-pointer by Bosserman followed by a fastbreak layup from Timberlake put BC on top by 19 points, 47-28, with 15:37 left to play. Lynchburg put forth a frantic rally in the closing three minutes, cutting a 14-point lead down to seven, 67-60, with 1:57 still to play. Bosserman then hit a baseline jumper to push the margin to nine and the Eagles made enough free throws down the stretch to finish with the 75-62 victory. Burkholder scored 20 points to pace four Eagles in double figures. Booker and Bosserman scored 11 points each and Timberlake added 10. Timberlake also added six steals and six assists while Burkholder finished with four assists and four steals. The Eagles battled the Hornets to a virtual standoff on the boards with Lynchburg holding a slim 52-50 margin. Rebecca Henderson pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds to lead the Eagles. Jordan Burkholder was the lone BC player in double figures with 12 points. With the victory, the Eagles improved to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the ODAC. Randolph dropped to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in the conference. The Eagles overcame a poor-shooting first half and led 29-15 at the break. Bridgewater made just 14-of-45 shots in the first half, but the Eagles held the Wildcats to just 22.7 percent from the floor on 5-of-22 shooting. Washington & Lee rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit Saturday afternoon to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles, 54-47, in ODAC women’s basketball action. The Eagles led 26-10 in the first half and took a nine-point lead into the locker room at the half. Bridgewater maintained the lead for much of the second half, leading by 10 points with nine minutes to play before the Generals put together their game-winning rally. The Eagles used an 11-4 run midway through the first half to break away from a 12-12 tie to take a 23-16 lead. Bridgewater closed the half with a 12-2 run to lead 37-23 at the break. The late run was highlighted by a steal and long 3-pointer by Rebecca Henderson at the buzzer. Freshman Jordan Burkholder scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds in her first collegiate game. The Bridgewater College women's basketball team was picked No. 6 in the ODAC Coaches' Women's Basketball preseason poll released Thursday.The Eagles are looking the fill holes in the lineup left by the graduation of four starters from the 2006-07 team that finished with a 17-9 overall record. Randolph-Macon was tabbed as the preseason favorite, followed by Virginia Wesleyan, Eastern Mennonite, Roanoke and Washington & Lee. Following the Eagles in the poll were Guilford, Lynchburg, Enory & Henry, Randolph and Hollins. |
Bridgewater College senior Katy Herr Lovell has been named the VaSID College Division State Player of the Year in voting by the state's sports information directors.Lovell averaged 13.1 points and 6.1 rebounds to go along with four assists and four steals per game. She was named First Team All-ODAC for a second straight year and led the league in steals, assists, and assists to turnover ratio. Lovell ranked 10th in the ODAC in scoring, 12th in rebounds, 11th in three-pointers made, sixth in three-point field goal percentage and third in field goal percentage. She finished her career ranked number one all-time at Bridgewater in steals, third all-time in assists, seventh all-time in rebounds and fifth all-time in scoring. Lovell started every game she played in and tied a school record for most games played. She was also an ESPN The Magazine District III College Division Women’s Basketball All-Academic First Team member. Joining Lovell on the First Team are Christopher Newport’s Nikki Rowland, Shenandoah’s Alicia Sanders, Lynchburg’s Caroline Wesley and UVA-Wise’s Sarah Helton. Three Bridgewater College seniors played Sunday in the annual ODAC vs, USA South Senior Challenge.USA South defeated the ODAC, 84-77, in the women’s game. Katy Herr Lovell, Amy Childs and Shannon Scales represented the Eagles in the game. Lovell scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out four assists and had six steals. Bridgewater College senior point guard Katy Herr Lovell was named to the All-State Division II/III second team by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Lovell led the Eagles to a 17-9 record this past season and finished her career as one of the top players in BC history. Lovell is ranked No. 5 all-time in points scored at Bridgewater College, No. 7 all-time in rebounding, No. 3 all-time in assists and No. 1 all-time in steals. A first-team All-ODAC selection as a senior, Lovell averaged 13.1 points, 6-2 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.8 steals per game. |
The top basketball seniors from the ODAC and the USA South will meet this Sunday at Roanoke College in the annual all-star event pitting the best from the two conferences. The women’s game will be played at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m. Representing the Bridgewater College women’s team will be Katy Herr Lovell, Amy Childs and Shannon Scales. The Bridgewater men's team had no seniors this season, thus no Eagles will be playing in the men's all-star contest. Admission for the games is $3. All high school age students and younger will be admitted free. |
Roanoke College shot 66.7 percent from the floor to open up a 55-39 lead at the half and the Maroons held off a furious rally by Bridgewater College down the stretch to take a 98-90 victory in the opening round of the ODAC women’s basketball tournament Saturday at Salem Civic Center. The Maroons seemed to have the game well in hand with a 67-44 lead with just more than 14 minutes left in the game. The Eagles gradually whittled away at the deficit and cut the margin under double digits with 5:25 left on a Katy Herr Lovell jumper, making the score 87-78. Three times in the final three minutes the Eagles got as close as five but each time the Maroons hit key shots or free throws to hold off Bridgewater. Amy Childs scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Eagles in her final game. All four Bridgewater seniors reached double figures with Shannon Scales scoring 18 points, Lovell 16 and Jessica Young 14. Jennifer Saunders also reached double digits with 10 points for the Eagles. The Maroons also put five players in double figures. Erin Hanson, the ODAC Player of the Year, led Roanoke with 16 points and 16 rebounds, despite going just 1-of-11 from the field. Hanson made 14-of-16 free throws. Erin Jenkins scored 15 points, followed by Torri Bridge with 14, Jaleesa Osborne with 12 and Cindy McGraw with 10. The Eagles finish the season with a 17-9 record.
