Bridgewater College was picked seventh in the ODAC field hockey preseason coaches’ poll released Tuesday.Lynchburg College, winners of the past two ODAC field hockey championships, was selected by the league’s coaches to win the title for a third consecutive time. The Hornets garnered five first-place votes and 60 total points. Eastern Mennonite University is just four points back (56 points) after picking up a pair of top marks. Washington and Lee University sits in third with 49 points and the remaining highest rank. Rounding out the poll were Randolph-Macon in fourth followed by Virginia Wesleyan, Roanoke, Bridgewater and Sweet Briar. |
The 2007 ZAG/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad was released Wednesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and six members of the Bridgewater College team were recognized.Eagles named to the squad included Kendra Anderson, Rachel Doria, Kasie Haga, Kalah Hess, Brianna Jacques and Kathleen Tamberrino. The National Academic Squad program recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2006-07 academic year. |

Lynchburg College broke free from a 0-0 halftime tie Saturday with three second-half goals to defeat Bridgewater College, 3-0, in ODAC field hockey action.The Hornets took the lead early in the second half on a goal by Allie Weir off an assist from Samantha Howard. The score remained 1-0 until 11:08 left in the contest when Jenny Weir scored for the Hornets. Katie Brennan added a late goal to complete the 3-0 victory for the Hornets. Bridgewater goalkeeper Elizabeth Sullivan helped keep the Eagles in contention for much of the game as she finished with 17 saves. The Eagles complete the regular season with a 4-12 overall record and a 2-5 ODAC mark. |
Juniata College, the No. 13 ranked team in Division III, scored two goals in the first three minutes Thursday and never looked back in defeating the Bridgewater College Eagles, 5-0, in non-conference field hockey action.Juniata is now 15-2 on the season while the Eagles drop to 4-11. The Bridgewater College field hockey won its third straight Wednesday with a 4-1 ODAC victory over Sweet Briar.The Eagles took the lead in the first two minutes when Kelli Worst scored off an assist from Kendra Anderson. Kristen Combs added a goal off an assist from from Brianna Jacques to give BC a 2-0 lead at the half. Jacques made it 3-0 with the assist going to Worst and Sammy Habron capped the scoring for the Eagles with a goal off of Jacques' second assist of the day. The Eagles are now 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the ODAC. Sweet Briar is now 2-7 overall and 0-4 in the ODAC. Molly McGonegle scored the goal for Sweet Briar. |
Bridgewater College won its second straight contest Monday afternoon as the Eagles defeated Shenandoah University, 5-2, in non-conference action.The Eagles led 2-1 at the half on a pair of goals by Brianna Jacques, but the Hornets tied the score early in the second half on a goal by Maggie Duthill, her second goal of the day. The Eagles took the lead for good with 23:47 left in the game when Kalah Hess scored off an assist from Kristin Combs. Jacques scored three goals and added one assist to lead the Eagles to the victory. Rachel Doria scored BC's other goal and also added an assist. Hess also had one assist to go along with her goal. The Eagles are now 3-6 overall while the Hornets drop to 0-7. |
Bridgewater College picked up a key ODAC victory Friday night as the Eagles defeated Roanoke College, 2-1, in overtime.The Maroons led 1-0 at the half on Kristen Santella's goal, but the Eagles tied the score in 54th minute when Kendra Anderson scored on an assist from Kristen Gamslow. The Eagles left with the victory when Kalah Hess scored in overtime. The Eagles are now 1-1 in the ODAC and 2-6 overall while the Maroons drop to 2-1 in the ODAC and 2-6 overall. |
Frostburg State scored a pair of goals early in the contest and that proved to be enough as the Bobcats defeated Bridgewater College, 2-0, Sunday in non-conference field hockey action.Sammy Statler scored the first goal off an assist from Lelly Filipowicz to give the Bobcats the lead with 26:11 left in the first half and Brooke Tapman added the second goal with 18:20 remaining. Amanda Runion recorded the shutout and finished with three save for the winners. Bridgewater goalkeeper Elizabeth Sullivan finished with seven saves. The Eagles are now 1-6 on the season. Frostburg State improves to 5-3. |

The Bridgewater College field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision Tuesday afternoon at the University of Mary Washington in non-conference field hockey action.Mary Washington led 2-0 at the half, but Bridgewater freshman Brianna Jacques scored with 14:06 left in the game to trim the margin to 2-1. Mary Washington regained control, scoring three goals down the stretch to pull away for the 5-1 victory. Bridgewater is now 1-4 on the season. The Eagles open ODAC play Friday when they travel to Ashland to face Randolph-Macon. |

Dickinson College scored three goals in the first 5:06 of the second half to wipe out a 1-0 halftime deficit and the Red Devils went on to post a 6-1 victory over the Bridgewater College Eagles.Bridgewater scored the only goal of the first half when Brianna Jacques scored off an assist from Kalah Hess. Dickinson tied the score on a goal by Lizzie Boorse just 2:28 into the second half and then took the lead on a goal by Alyssa Sands just 1:22 later. Sands, Boorse and Katelynn Bias scored two goals apiece in the Dickinson victory. Bridgewater goalkeeper Elizabeth Sullivan faced 33 shots and finished with 14 saves. |
Centre College scored two goals in the final five minutes of the game to defeat Bridgewater College, 2-1, in non-conference field hockey action Saturday at Mapp Field.After a scoreless first half, the Eagles took the lead on a goal by Christina Pybus with 16:22 left in the game. Centre tied the score with just 4:34 remaining on a goal by Mollie Ronald. Sarah Humphries scored what proved to be the winning goal on a penalty stroke with 2:14 left. Bridgewater had four penalty corners in the final minute, but the Centre defense turned the Eagles away to preserve the victory. |

Delaware Valley handed the Bridgewater College Eagles their first loss of the season, 3-1, Sunday at the Black-Eyed Susan field hockey tournament hosted by Villa Julie College. Michelle Cernobyl scored twice to lead Delaware Valley to the victory. The Eagles trailed 1-0 at the half when Cernobyl scored off an assist from Holly Rich. An unassisted goal from Cernobyl early in the second half made the score 2-0 and a goal by Bethany Pavlik gave Delaware Valley a 3-0 lead. The Eagles avoided a shutout when Kaitlyn Brewer scored off an assist from Kalah Hess. |

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) released its 2006 Division III National Academic Squad on Tuesday and 11 members of the Bridgewater College team were recognized.Eagles named to the squad included Kendra Anderson, Rachel Doria, Kasie Haga, Karen Hammerschmidt, Courtney Harvey, Kimberly Johnston, Kirsten Minor, Jaclynne Murk, Ashley Norris, Erin Spadaro and Kathleen Tamberrino. The National Academic Squad program recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who have achieved a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the first semester of the 2006-07 academic year. The Eagles were also recognized for the National Academic Team Award as one of 86 colleges and universities with a field hockey team GPA of 3.0 or better during the first semester of the 2006-07 school year. | Bridgewater College senior Erin Spadaro was selected to the All-ODAC field hockey team for the third straight year. Spadaro led the Eagles in goals with seven, assists with seven and points with 21. Sophomore Kendra Anderson was named to the All-ODAC second team. Anderson scored three goals and added three assists for the Eagles. Senior Kim Johnston received honorable mention on the All-ODAC team. Johnston finished second on the team in scoring with 10 points. Washington & Lee’s Kendall Korte was named the ODAC Player of the Year. Lynchburg’s Allie Weir was named Freshman of the Year and her coach, Enza Steele was selected ODAC Coach of the Year. Torrie Higgins of Randolph-Macon was voted the ODAC Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Eastern Mennonite received the Team Sportsmanship Award. |
