Guilford defeated Bridgewater College, 5-2, in a close match in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC Men's Tennis Tournament played Wednesday at the Bridgewater courts.The Quakers took a 3-0 lead after doubles play, including a 9-8 victory at No. 1 where Jose Ortiz and Caleb Kimbrough edged BC's Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke. The Eagles faced the daunting task of needing to win five of the six singles to extend their season and they didn't go down without a fight. Remsch orchestrated a stirring comeback at No. 1 singles. Ortiz raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first set, but Remsch rallied to win the set in a tiebreaker and then won the second set 6-2. Ryan Radke won at No. 2 in straight sets, but the Eagles were unable to pull out wins in close matches in the final four singles. Guilford's Mike Muir defeated Colin Saunders 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 and Will Mason-Deese defeated Brad DeWitt 6-3, 7-6 to clinch the match for the Quakers. Bridgewater College will host a first round match in the ODAC men's tournament on Wednesday, April 16.The Eagles, seeded No. 4 in the tournament, will host No. 5 seed Guilford College. The match will begin at 3 p.m. Bridgewater defeated the Quakers, 6-3, during the regular season. |
