Two Bridgewater players reached the final in singles play Sunday at the ITA Southeast Regional tennis tournament host by the University of Mary Washington.In the B4 singles draw, Teddy Callow and Brad DeWitt both reached the semifinals. Callow lost to Moravian's Kevin Holze 7-6, 6-1 while DeWitt won in three sets over York's Steve Collison. Holze then ousted DeWitt in the final 6-1, 6-4. In the B6 bracket Brent Floyd won the title, winning both his semifinal and title match in three sets. |
The Bridgewater College men’s tennis team competed Saturday at the ITA Southeast Regional hosted by Mary Washington College. In the championship singles draw, Brian Remsch defeated Dustin Nelson of Christopher Newport in his first match but lost in the next round to Hampden-Sydney’s Rich Pugh 7-6, 6-1. In the B2 singles draw, Chris Radke lost his first match in three sets and then retired due to an injury in his consolation match. In the B4 singles, two BC players reached the semifinals. Teddy Callow advanced to the semis with a pair of wins along with teammate Brad DeWitt. Rick Sheaffer won his first match in the B5 singles draw, but retired due to injury in his quarterfinal match. In the B6 singles bracket, Brent Floyd advanced to the semifinals with a straight set victory in his lone match of the day. In the championship doubles draw, Remsch and Ryan Radke were upset in their first match, but bounced back to win two matches in the consolation draw. In the B2 doubles to the teams of Callow-Sheaffer and DeWitt-Floyd each lost two matches. |

Guilford defeated Bridgewater College, 5-2, in a close match in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC Men's Tennis Tournament played Wednesday at the Bridgewater courts.The Quakers took a 3-0 lead after doubles play, including a 9-8 victory at No. 1 where Jose Ortiz and Caleb Kimbrough edged BC's Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke. The Eagles faced the daunting task of needing to win five of the six singles to extend their season and they didn't go down without a fight. Remsch orchestrated a stirring comeback at No. 1 singles. Ortiz raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first set, but Remsch rallied to win the set in a tiebreaker and then won the second set 6-2. Ryan Radke won at No. 2 in straight sets, but the Eagles were unable to pull out wins in close matches in the final four singles. Guilford's Mike Muir defeated Colin Saunders 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 and Will Mason-Deese defeated Brad DeWitt 6-3, 7-6 to clinch the match for the Quakers. Bridgewater College swept the singles matches Tuesday to defeat St. Norbert, 7-2, at Hilton Head, S.C.The Eagles trailed 2-1 after doubles play. Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke at No. 1 picked up the Eagles' doubles point with an 8-5 win. There were some closes matches in singles, but the Eagles managed to win all six. Remsch took a straight set win at No. 1 and Radke survived a close first set to win 7-6, 6-0 at No. 2. Chris Radke took the No. 3 match in straight sets, but Brad DeWitt had his hands full at No. 4. DeWitt lost the first set 6-7, but evened the match by winning the second set 6-2. The third set was played as a tiebreaker with DeWitt winning 11-9. Teddy Callow at No. 5 and Colin Saunders at No. 6 each won in straight sets, making the final score 7-2. |

The Bridgewater College men’s tennis team was picked to finish fourth in the ODAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll released Monday.First-year head coach Conor Smith returns four players from last year’s team that finished that finished fifth in the ODAC regular season standings. Defending conference champion Washington & Lee was a unanimous pick to finish first in the conference. Bridgewater College’s Brian Remsch placed third in Flight A at the ODAC Singles Championships hosted this weekend at Washington & Lee. Remsch defeated Jon Best (Randolph-Macon) in the first round, 6-0, 6-1 and then defeated Callahan Hart of Roanoke 6-2, 7-6 in the quarterfinal round. Hampden-Sydney’s William Moss defeated Remsch 6-2, 7-6 in the semis and Remsch won the third-place match by default. Ryan Radke lost his first round match in Flight A to W&L’s Todd Hatcher 7-6, 6-1 and then posted a 1-1 record in consolation play. In Flight B, Chris Radke won a play-in match and then he and Andrew Thornton both won first-round contests. Chris Radke defeated Pablo Farkes (Emory & Henry) 6-0, 7-6 while Thornton ousted Kevin Lloyd (Randolph-Macon) 6-2, 6-0. Thornton and Chris Radke both lost in the quarterfinals. In consolation play, Thornton posted a 1-1 record and Chris Radke was 0-1. In Flight C action, Brad DeWitt and Colin Saunders both won first-round matches. DeWitt defeated Ken Fetzer (Randolph-Macon) 6-2, 6-1 and Saunders posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Allan Marrs (Randolph) 6-1, 6-1. Both BC players then lost in the quarters before moving to consolation play. DeWitt posted a 1-1 record in the consolation round while Saunders was 0-1. |
Bridgewater College Director of Athletics Curt Kendall has announced the hiring of Conor Smith as the head men’s and women’s tennis coach.Men’s tennis coach Steve Watson stepped down from his coaching duties at the conclusion of the 2007 season. The men finished the 2007 season with an 8-7 overall record. Smith played four years of tennis at the University of Mary Washington and was a two-time All-American. Smith was the Capital Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in 2000 and in 2001 he was individually ranked No. 30 in Division III. Smith earned his first All-American honor as a junior in 2002. He was ranked No. 16 in Division III and as a team Mary Washington was ranked No. 14. As a senior captain, Smith was named an All-American for the second time. He was ranked No. 15 in the nation and won the ITA Senior Regional Player of the Year. Mary Washington finished the 2003 season ranked No. 7 in Division III. Smith began his coaching career in September, 2003 as the men’s assistant coach at Mary Washington, a position he held until May, 2005. Later in 2005, he accepted a position as women’s assistant coach at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history at Mary Washington and in 2007 he received his Masters degree in history at Washington College. |
Bridgewater College men’s tennis coach Steve Watson is stepping down from his coaching position after leading the program for the past four seasons. Watson took over a struggling program and quickly turned the Eagles into a solid team in the ODAC. The Eagles had a winning record overall in each of the Watson’s four seasons. In 2004, the Eagles finished 10-8 overall and placed fifth at the ODAC tournament. In 2005, the Eagles were 10-5 overall and placed sixth at the ODAC tournament. The 2006 team set a new college record for wins in a season with a 13-4 record. The Eagles placed fifth at the conference tournament. This past season, the Eagles were 8-7 overall and 5-4 in the ODAC. The Eagles placed fifth in the ODAC regular season standings with a 5-4 record and lost a close match to Hampden-Sydney in the first round of the conference tournament. Watson will remain at the college as an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religion. |

The season ended Wednesday for the Bridgewater College men’s tennis team as the Eagles lost at Hampden-Sydney, 6-3, in the first round of the ODAC tournament. The Tigers took control of the match from the start by sweeping the three doubles matches for a 3-0 lead. Bridgewater managed a split in singles play, but the Eagles were unable to overcome the early deficit. Anthony Checchio won in straight sets over Richie Holzapfel 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Ryan Smith won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5 over Andrew McLeod. Andrew Thornton lost the first set to Jenks Snyder at No. 4, but rallied to win the next two sets, 6-3, 6-3. The Eagles finish the season with an overall record of 8-7. |
With the regular season now complete, the Bridgewater College men’s tennis team awaits its first-round opponent and destination. Several regular season matches need to be completed this weekend in order to determine the first-round pairings. According to head coach Steve Watson, the Eagles, barring any big upsets this weekend, will likely be heading to Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday, April 18 for its first-round match. Hampden-Sydney defeated the Eagles 6-3 in the regular season in a match that could have gone either way. The No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches each went to three sets with the Tigers victorious in three of those matches. Bridgewater has been led in doubles this spring by the senior tandem of Ryan Smith and Brent Campbell. Playing at No. 3 doubles, Smith-Campbell have been perfect as the duo has posted a 12-0 record this spring. The Eagles have shown their strength at the bottom half of the singles ladder where all three players have posted winning records. Andrew Thornton is 7-3 at No. 4 singles while Smith has posted a 10-3 mark at No. 5. At No. 6, Chris Radke has posted a 10-3 record. Ryan Radke has also posted a winning record at No.2 singles where he is 8-6 this spring. |

Virginia Wesleyan College slipped past Bridgewater College, 5-4, Saturday in ODAC men’s tennis action.The Marlins took a 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins at No. and No. 2 doubles. The BC Eagles won at No. 3 where Ryan Smith-Brent Campbell won their match in a tiebreaker. In singles play, Virginia Wesleyan controlled play at the top of the ladder while the Eagles were dominant at the bottom of the ladder. The Marlins won the top three singles flights to earn the points necessary for the team victory. Andrew Thornton won in straight sets at No. 4 and teammates Ryan Smith at No. 5 and Chris Radke at No. 6 followed suit with straight set victories in their matches. Remsch lost the first set in a tiebreaker but rallied to even the match by winning the second set 6-2. The match was decided by tiebreaker that Remsch won 10-8. The Bridgewater College men’s tennis team opened its season Saturday with a tough 5-4 victory over Guilford College in an ODAC match.
The Eagles split the singles matches, but took two of the three doubles to edge the Quakers.In singles, Ryan Radke at No. 2 and Ryan Smith at No. 5 won in straight sets. Chris Radke needed three sets to win at No. 6. After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, Chris won the next two sets 6-4, 6-1 to win the match. Brian Remsch lost a tough match at No. 1 singles as all three sets went to a tiebreaker with Guilford’s Jose Ortiz winning the second and third sets. In doubles, the Eagles won at No. 2 and No. 3. Anthony Checchio and Ryan Radke won 8-3 at No. 2 while Brent Campbell and Smith won a close 9-7 match at No. 3. |
The Bridgewater College men’s tennis team was picked to finish fifth in the ODAC men’s tennis preseason poll released Thursday.The Eagles return five of the top seven players from last year’s team that finished fifth at the ODAC Championships. | The Bridgewater College men’s tennis team dominated play to win the Bud Skeens Ferrum tennis tournament Saturday. The Eagles won four of the six singles brackets and one of the three doubles to win the tournament. Brian Remsch at No, 1 and Ryan Radke at No. 2 each finished second is his respective bracket. The Eagles dominated the remainder of the draw with Anthony Checchio at No. 3, Ryan Smith at No. 4 Brent Campbell at No. 5 and Chris Radke at No. 6 each winning his flight. In doubles play, Chris Radke and Cempbell won the title at No. 3 doubles. Ferrum, Averett and King’s College also participated in the tournament. |
| Bridgewater College’s Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke were eliminated from the Wilson/ITA Atlantic South hosted by Salisbury University. Remsch was eliminated from the main draw when he lost his consolation match to Shingo Murata of Swarthmore, 8-1. Radke was ousted from the B draw when he lost his second round match to Dan Myers of Johns Hopkins, 6-1, 6-1. In the open doubles draw, the Remsch-Radke duo lost in the opening round Johns Hopkins’ E.J. Hayes and David Maldow, 8-3. The BC pair then lost their first consolation match to Swarthmore’s Kevin Shaughnessy and Sam Sidhu, 8-2. |
