Bridgewater College senior Melvin Queen has been named the ODAC Male Track & Field Athlete of the Year in voting by the conference coaches. Queen shares the honor with Lynchburg pole vaulter Scott Decker.Queen, a senior from Chesapeake, Virginia, won twice outdoors at the ODAC Championships including a fourth straight title in the 100-meter dash (11.00 seconds). He also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.94 seconds. Queen then teamed with Brandon Copeland, Tyler Beiler and Tony Konate in the 4x100-meter relay, claiming top marks with a time of 41.73 seconds. That time set a new ODAC Championships record by 0.01 seconds, replacing the 1998 Bridgewater team with a newer edition of Eagles. At the ODAC indoor championships, Queen won the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.48 seconds. In Wisconsin at the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Queen competed in a pair of events, placing sixth overall in the 100-meter dash in 10.80 seconds. The Eagles’ 4x100-meter relay team also made the trip up north, but the Eagles’ time of 41.32 seconds fell one slot short of qualifying for the event’s final heat. |
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named Bridgewater College junior Nathan Turner the South/Southeast Region outdoor track field athlete of the year.Turner won the javelin, shot put and hammer at the ODAC Championships. He qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in the shot put with the second-best throw in the nation. Turner earned All-American honors in the shot with a second-place finish at the national meet. |

Turner finished second in the shot put with a distance of 54 feet, 6.5 inches. Turner also earned All-American honors during the indoor season. |
Bridgewater College qualified athletes in four men's events for the upcoming NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships hosted by Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Individuals qualifying for national competition are Nathan Turner in the shot put, Melvin Queen in the 100 and Brandon Copeland in the long jump. Turner, an All-American performer in the shot during indoor season, ranks second in the nation going into the national meet with a throw of 56 feet, 6 inches. Queen’s time of 10.58 seconds in the 100 meters is tied for the fourth fastest time in Division III. Copeland ranks ninth in the long jump with a best jump of 23 feet, 4.5 inches. The men’s team 4x100 relay team (Queen, Copeland, Tony Konate and Tyler Beiler) has the 14th fastest time in Division III at 41.50 seconds. The top eight finishers in each event earn All-American status. The national meet runs May 22-24. |
Brandon Copeland in the long jump and the 4x100 relay team improved their NCAA provisional qualifying marks Friday during the Eastern Mennonite University Last Chance Meet. Brandon Copeland virtually assured himself a spot in the NCAA Championships in the long jump. Copeland jumped 7.13 meters (23 feet, 4.75 inches). The jumps ranks among the 10 best in the nation in Division III this season. The 4x100 men's relay team also improved its chances of going to the national meet with a time of 41.50 seconds - the second-fastest time in BC history. The team of Copeland, Melvin Queen, Tony Konate and Tyler Beiler moved into the Top 15 in Division III. Other winners at Friday's meet included Stanley Peyton in the 800 with a time of 1:54.44 and Nathan Turner in the shot with a toss of 16.42 meters. |

Bridgewater College senior Melvin Queen met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the 100 meters Thursday at the Liberty Twilight Invitational. Queen placed fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.58 seconds to meet the NCAA standard. Bridgewater’s Nathan Turner placed first in the shot put with his best throw of the season at 56 feet, 6 inches. Turner currently ranks second in the nation in the event. Tony Konate had a strong showing with Top 10 efforts in both sprints. Konate finished eighth in the 100 at 10.91 and ninth in the 200 with a time of 21.80. Stanley Peyton and Jacob Griffin both placed in the Top 10 in the 800. Peyton placed sixth with a time of 1:54.76 and Griffith finished 10th with a time of 1:56.09. Nathan Rittenhouse took third in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 9:33.20. |
The Bridgewater College men’s track team ended Lynchburg College’s 10-year domination of ODAC outdoor track and field as the Eagles won the ODAC Championship meet Saturday at Roanoke College. The Eagles also awarded two of the conference's top honors as Shane Stevens was named Men's Outdoor Track Coach of the Year and Damien Ward was named Rookie of the Year. Saturday's honor marked the seventh time Stevens has been named the men's outdoor track coach of the year. He also received the top coaching honor this year during the indoor season. The Eagles held a 72-29 lead over Lynchburg after the first day of events and the deficit proved to be too much for the Hornets to overcome. Bridgewater finished with 232 points while the Hornets finished with 200. On Saturday, the Eagles dominated the sprints. In the 100, Melvin Queen made history when he became the first male athlete to win the 100 four straight years. Queen won Saturday’s event with a time of 11.00. The Eagles made it a 1-2-3 finish with Tony Konate taking second and Brandon Copeland third. Tyler Beiler finished fifth for BC. In the 200, Konate won the event with a time of 21.86 and Queen placed second. Stanley Peyton took a pair of third place finishes in the 400 and 800 and Jacob Griffin placed fourth in both the 800 and 1500. Nathan Rittenhouse finished a grueling three days in the distance events. One day after winning the 3000 meter steeplechase, Rittenhouse placed third in the 1500 and fourth in the 5000. BC also fared well in the hurdles. In the 110 hurdles, JT Painter placed second with Damien Ward in third and Keenan Fenwick sixth. Ward came back to add a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles. The BC relay teams also turned in big efforts. The men’s 4x100 finished first with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 41.73 seconds. The runners were Queen, Konate, Copeland and Beiler. The time was also a new championship meet record. The 4x400 ran its best time of the season to finish second. Running a 3:26.34 were Julius Delbridge, Ward, Peyton and Griffin. In the field events, Nathan Turner made it a clean sweep in the throws by winning the discus with a distance 44.61 meters. Thomas Bell placed third and C.J. Thomas was fifth in the discus for BC. Turner won the shot and hammer on Friday. His winning throw in the shot of 16.69 meters was a new championship meet record as well as a new overall ODAC record for the event. The Eagles took three places in both the triple jump and javelin. Leigh Bradley placed second in the triple jump followed by Donte Montague in the third and Jeremy Lewis in sixth. In the high jump Bradley cleared the bar at 1.88 meters to win the event. Ward placed second and Montague was fourth. Josh King placed third in the javelin followed by Matt Armstrong in fifth and Fenwick in the sixth. Rounding out the BC scoring were John Harris and Armstrong who placed fourth and fifth in the pole vault. |
Five individual events were contested on the first day of the ODAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at Roanoke College and members of the Bridgewater College team took first in each event. The Eagles men got off to a strong start on the first day, scoring 73 points. Defending champion Lynchburg is second with 29 and things are expected to tighten up on Day 2 with the Hornets looking forward to several strong events. On the first day, Nathan Turner continued his season-long dominance of the throws by winning both the shot put and hammer. Turner won the shot with a throw of 16.65 meters. Teammates Nick Fawley and C.J. Thomas placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Turner won the hammer with a throw of 52 meters. The Eagles took three places in the both the long jump and high jump. In the long jump, Brandon Copeland won with a jump of 6.96 meters. Keenan Fenwick placed fourth and Tony Konate took fifth. In the high jump Leigh Bradley cleared the bar at 1.88 meters to win the event. Damien Ward placed second and Donte Montague was fourth. BC’s final points on Day 1 came from Nathan Rittenhouse who won the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 10:02.4. Several qualifying heats were also held Friday and the Eagles qualified several runners for Saturday’s finals. BC qualified four runners for the 100 meter finals with Melvin Queen and Konate posting the fastest tines in trials. The Eagles will send three runners to the 200 finals with Queen and Konate again among the fastest in trials. Stanley Peyton had the second-fastest time Friday to move on the 400 finals while Ward qualified for the 400 hurdle finals. The Eagles also made a strong showing in the 110 hurdles with four of the eight spots in the finals going to BC runners. |
Bridgewater College senior sprinter Melvin Queen was named the ODAC Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week by the conference office Monday.Queen won the 100 meters, 200 meters and ran on the winning 4x100 relay team to lead Bridgewater to the team title at the 18-team Messiah Invitational. Queen won the 100 in a time of 10.79, missing the NCAA provisional mark by 1/100th of a second. He won the 200 in 21.77 to set a new Bridgewater College record, this time missing the NCAA provisional mark by 2/100ths of a second. In the relay the Eagles won with a time of 42.02, again missing the NCAA provisional mark by 2/100ths of a second. |
The Bridgewater College men’s track team scored 151 points to win the 18-team Messiah Invitational on Saturday. Melvin Queen won both sprints, running a 10.79 to win the 100 and a 21.77 to win the 200. His time in the 200 set a new Bridgewater College record in the event. Nathan Turner continued to dominate the throws with two firsts and a third. Turner won the shot with a throw of 15.92 meters and the hammer with a throw of 51.77 meters. He also placed third in the discus. Nathan Rittenhouse also picked up a first for the Eagles by winning the 1500 meters with a time of 4:02.19. Stanley Peyton was honored as the ODAC Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for his record-breaking performance at the Duke Invitational. Peyton broke one of the oldest records in the BC record book during the Duke Invitational. Peyton ran the 800 in a time of 1:54.04 to break a record that had stood for 24 years. The old record was set in 1984 by Mark Luiggi with a time of 1:54.36. Peyton’s time is the best in the ODAC this season. Peyton also ran the 400 meters at Duke with a personal best time of 49.77 – the first sub 50-second 400 run by a BC athlete since the 2000 season. Peyton’s time ranks third in the ODAC this season. |

The Bridgewater College men’s track team scored 130 points Saturday to win the title at the Don Frail Invitational host by Marietta College. The BC men set one new meet record when they won the 4x100 relay with a time of 42.17 seconds. The team featured Tyler Beiler, Melvin Queen, Tony Konate and Brandon Copeland. The Eagles won three individual events with Leigh Bradley winning the triple jump and Nathan Turner placing first in both the shot put and hammer. Queen placed second in both sprints and JT Painter placed second in the 110 hurdles. The Eagles piled up a slew of third-place efforts that helped them secure the team title. Placing third were Jeff McCauley in the 1500 and 5000 meters, Keenan Fenwick in the 110 hurdles and long jump, Konate in the 100, Bradley in the high jump and Turner in the discus. |
Nathan Rittenhouse broke his own record Friday in the 5000 meters at the Duke Invitational.Rittenhouse finished with a time of 15:05.54 seconds to break the record he set last spring. Rittenhouse ran 15:08.81 in 2007. Stanley Peyton ran his personal best in the 400 with a time of 49.77 seconds. Peyton's time was the first sub-50 second 400 by an Eagles since 200 when Andre Jones ran a 49.53. Jacob Griffin also competed Friday, running a time of 4:20.67 in the 1,500 meters. |

A pair of Division I throwers placed ahead of Turner in the hammer. His throws in both the shot and hammer were new Bridgewater College records and both marks met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. |

Several meet records were broken Saturday at the Harry G.M. “Doc” Jopson Invitational Track & Field Meet hosted by Bridgewater College. The men set new meet and facility records in both the 5000 meters and the discus. The women established three new meet and facilty records along with one new meet record. Bridgewater’s Nathan Rittenhouse won the 5000 meters with a time of 15:22.34 while James Eberhardt, competing unattached, set a new meet and facility record in the discus with a winning throw of 144 feet, 5 inches. Bridgewater College junior Nathan Turner has qualified to participate in the shot put at the NCAA Division III national meet this weekend at Ohio Northern.Turner has the third best throw in the nation this indoor season with a distance of 16.82 meters. Courtney Hartman also bettered the previous record when she ran 26.39 on Saturday. Freshman Christina Rhodes broke her own record in the pole vault when she cleared 11 feet, ½ inch. The Bridgewater College men’s track team placed second and the women placed fourth at the ODAC Indoor Track & Field Championship meet held Friday at Liberty University. The BC men finished the meet with 154.5 points to finish behind Lynchburg College with 186.5 points. The Eagles had five individual champions in the men’s meet. Melvin Queen won the 55 meters with a time of 6.48 seconds to edge teammate Tony Konate for the win. Konate placed in two other events with a sixth in the 200 and a fifth in the long jump. Queen ran a 6.46 time in the 55 meter prelims to meet the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Stanley Peyton won the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.44. Teammate Jacob Griffin placed fourth in the event. JT Painter took first in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 7.84 seconds. Keenan Fenwick placed fourth in the hurdles and Damien Ward finished fifth. Fenwick also placed sixth in the long jump while Ward added a second-place finish in the high jump. Brandon Copeland won the long jump title with a distance of 6.96 meters to meet the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Nathan Turner won the shot put with a toss of 16.26 meters and teammates CJ Thomas and Nick Fawley finished third and fourth in the shot. Turner also placed second in the weight throw and Thomas Bell earned a sixth in the weight throw. The Eagles took two places in the pole vault with Matt Armstrong in third and John Harris fifth. Nathan Rittenhouse turned in two strong runs in the distance events with a third in the mile and a second in the 5000. Donte Montague placed in two field events with a second in the triple jump and a third in the high jump. Rounding out the individual scoring for the men was Jeremy Lewis with a fifth in the triple jump. BC freshman Christina Rhodes was the lone individual winner for the women as she won the pole vault with a height of 3.05 meters. Nicole Phillips and Stacey DeHaven tied for fifth in the pole vault. Courtney Hartman and Jill Wattai had solid days as each placed in three events. Hartman was fourth in the 400 and fifth in both the high jump and 200. Wattai was third in the 200, fourth in the 55 meters and fifth in the long jump. Erin Boston just missed winning the high jump as she finished second with a height of 1.59 meters. Bridgewater College athletes turned in several strong performances Saturday at the Susquehanna Open. Leading the women’s efforts was freshman Christina Rhodes who cleared 10 feet, 11.75 inches to win the pole vault. Nicole Phillips also finished in the Top 10, clearing 9 feet, 6.25 inches to place ninth. Jill Wattai also had a strong day for the Eagles. Wattai jumped 17 feet in the long jump to place second. Wattai is just the second BC female athlete to hit the 17-foot mark in the long jump. She also placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 27.14 and just missed qualifying for the 55 meter final as she finished seventh in the preliminary with the top six advancing. Courtney Hartman also just missed the final in the 55 as she had the eight-fastest time at 7.66. For the men Nathan Turner continued his strong performances in the throws. Turner finished fourth in the shot put and weight throw and was the top Division III thrower in each event. He threw the shot 52 feet, 3.75 inches and then posted a distance of 48 feet, 7.5 inches. Brandon Copeland placed third overall in two events. He ran a time of 6.58 in the 55 meters and long jumped 21 feet, 7.5 inches. Other Top 10 efforts were turned in by Donte Montague with a fifth place in the triple jump at 41 feet, 7.75 inches, Brandon Spalding with a seventh-place finish in the 5,000 and Damien Ward with an eight-place in the high jump with a personal-best 6 feet, 2 inches. JT Painter ran 8.23 in the 55 meter hurdles to just missed the final with the eighth-fastest time. |

Nathan Rittenhouse, Nathan Turner and Chelsea Goss set new Bridgewater College records Saturday at the OnTrack Invitational indoor track meet at Liberty University. Rittenhouse ran the 3000 meters in a time of 8:58.63 records to break the mark of 9:03.56 set by teammate Brandon Spalding last year. Rittenhouse placed seventh in the event. Turner placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 50 feet, 1.25 inches to set a new BC record. Turner also placed third in the shot put with a distance of 51 feet, 4.25 inches. The Bridgewater College men’s and women’s track teams turned in strong performances Sunday afternoon at the Orange & Maroon Classic hosted by Susquehanna University. The meet was the first of the season for the Eagles. Bridgewater College had three individual winners and one NCAA provisional qualifier. Two new BC records were also set Sunday. Nathan Turner shattered the BC record in the shot put and met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard with a throw of 16.82 meters (55 feet, 2.25 inches). Turner just missed the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 17.00 meters. Stanley Peyton placed first in the 800 with a time of 2:01.51. There were several other strong performances by the BC men. JT Painter placed fourth in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.05 seconds – the fourth fastest time in Eagles’ history. In the 55 meters, Tony Konate and Melvin Queen finished 1-2 in the trials, but both false started in the final. The women’s team also turned in strong efforts in the first meet. Freshman Christina Rhodes posted a height of 10 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault to place second while setting a new Bridgewater College record. Chelsea Goss won the 800 with a time of 2:30.96 – a personal best and the second-fastest time in Bridgewater history. Freshman Kendra Jackson placed second in the long jump at 16 feet, 4.5 inches. The Bridgewater College men's indoor track team was picked to finish second in the ODAC coaches' preseason poll.Defending champion Lynchburg received five first-place votes to top this winter's men's poll. The Eagles received one first-place vote. The rest of the poll is Washington & Lee in third followed by Roanoke, Eastern Mennonite and Virginia Wesleyan. < Bridgewater College finished second in last year’s championship meet. The Eagles return two individual champions from last year - Melvin Queen in the 55m dash and Brandon Copeland in the long jump. Nathan Rittenhouse and Brandon Spalding also look to return to form after placing second and third respectively in the 5000m. Bridgewater College freshman Courtney Hartman improved her score in the heptathlon with her effort Friday at Liberty University’s Twilight Invitational.Hartman finished the seven-event competition with 4,301 points. Her previous best total was 4,112 points. Hartman has met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard and her total now ranks among the Top 20 in the nation in Division III. She ranks third best in the nation among freshmen competitors. |
Bridgewater College junior Stanley Peyton won the 800 meters Thursday at the Liberty Twilight Invitational with a time of 1:57.22.Courtney Hartman was second after first-day competition in the heptathlon. Hartman finished the first four events with 2.564 points. The Bridgewater College men's track team placed second at the ODAC meet Saturday and the women finished fourth.The men scored 130.5 points to finish behind meet champion Lynchburg. The women finished the day with 69.5 points. The men's team won four individual titles and one relay and also set two new ODAC records. Junior Melvin Queen won the 100 meters in an ODAC record time of 10.73 seconds to hold off teammate Tony Konate for the title. Queen's time also met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. The BC sprinters switched places in the 200 with Konate winning the event in a new ODAC record time of 21.78 seconds. At the conclusion of the meet, Konate was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year. Stamley Peyton won the 800 title with a time of 1:55.20. Nathan Rittenhouse won the 5000 meters with a time of 15:33.52 and teammate Brandon Spalding placed second. Rittenhouse also placed third in the 1500 meters. The 4x100 relay team of Brandon Copeland, Queen, Konate and Peyton edged Lynchburg to win the event. The Bridgewater men's and women's track and field teams will compete at the ODAC Championship Meet on Saturday at Lynchburg College.Bridgewater and Eastern Mennonite should pose the stiffest challenge to heavy favorite Lynchburg College in the men's meet. The Eagles should score well in the sprints and distance events. BC's Melvin Queen boasts the top time in 100 and teammate Tony Konate has the fastest time this spring in the 200. Stanley Peyton has the second-fastest 800 time and Nathan Rittenhouse could contend in the 1500. Freshman Tony Konate won both sprints Saturday to lead the Eagles at the Royals Invitational track meet at Eastern Mennonite University.Konate won the 100 with a time of 11.03 and then placed first in the 200 at 22.06. Other winners for the men included Stanley Peyton in the 400 (50.47), Jeff Tolley in the 100 hurdles (16.84) and Brandon Copeland in the long jump (21-10.25). For the women, Jill Wattai placed second in the 200 with a time of 25.99 seconds. Bridgewater College freshman Courtney Hartman met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the heptathlon at the Generals Combined Event Challenge hosted by Washington & Lee University.Running the heptathlon for just the second time in her career, Hartman placed first among six competitors with 4,112 points. Fellow BC freshman Sammy Mizerak placed third with 3.664 points. On the first day of competition Thursday, Hartman ran the 100 meter hurdles in 17.55 seconds, high jumped 4 feet,8 inches, put the shot 34 feet, 2.5 inches and ran the 200 in 26.51 seconds. On day two Friday, Hartman completed the seven-event competition by long jumping 15fett, 7.5 inches, throwing the javelin 104 feet, 9 inches and running the 800 in 2:31.07. |
The Bridgewater College women’s track team placed second and the men finished third at the Messiah Invitational on Saturday. The women finished with 101.5 points to place second in the 13-team field. The men tallied 99.5 points to place third out of 16 teams. Jill Wattai and Courtney Hartman had big days to lead the BC women. The Eagles dominated the women’s sprints. Wattai, Hartman and Samantha Phillips placed 1-2-5 in the 100. Wattai came back to placed first in the 200 with Phillips also scoring in seventh. The Eagles also won the 4x100 relay. Bridgewater College sophomore Nathan Rittenhouse set a new BC record in the 5000 meters during Friday competition at the Duke Asics Invitational. Rittenhouse ran the event in 15:08.81 breaking the previous standard held by Gerald Crouse at 15:24.7, set in 1979. Teammate Brandon Spalding also ran a strong race in the 5000.with a personal best of 15:32.84 – the third-fastest time in Eagles’ history. Several more BC athletes turned in solid performances at the Duke meet. Jill Wattai ran the second-fastest 200 in BC history as she eclipsed the 26-second mark with a time of 25.97 seconds. Brittany Wells turned in a personal best in the 1500 with a time of 5:15.01. In the 400, Courtney Hartman ran a 1:01.50 and Samantha Phillips finished at 1:06.66. Bridgewater College sophomore Nathan Rittenhouse has been named the ODAC Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week.Rittenhouse placed second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the ASICs Collegiate Invitational hosted by Liberty University. Rittenhouse finished with a time of 9:42.58 to set a new BC record in the event. He eclipsed the previous mark by almost 46 seconds. Courtney Hartman finished in third place in the heptathlon Saturday at the ASICS Collegiate Invitational hosted by Liberty University. Hartman finished with 4,088 points, just missing the NCAA provisional qualifying standard by 12 points. It was her first attempt at competing in the heptathlon. Teammate Sammy Mizerak also made her first attempt at the event and finished sixth with 3,618 points. In the men’s sprints, Melvin Queen and Tony Konate continued to turn in strong performances. In the 100 Queen finished fourth with a time of 10.96 seconds and Konate was fifth in 11.01. The two BC runners ranked 1-2 among collegiate runners. In the 200 meters, Konate placed fourth with a time of 21.97 and Queen was sixth at 22.33. Once again the duo placed 1-2 among college runners. Saturday, the event concludes wtih the long jump, javelin and 800 meters. Competing in the heptathlon for the first time in her career, Hartman is fourth in a field of 11 competitors. She finished seventh in the 100 hurdles, tied for fourth in the high jump, third in the shot and third in the 200. Jopson Track & Field Invitational held Saturday at Bridgewater College. Konate ran a 10.96 to finish third in the 100. He won the 200 with a time of 22.18 seconds. The 200 time ranks Konate in the top five in BC history in the event. He became the ninth runner in BC history to break the 11.0 mark in the 100. |
Bridgewater College hosted its annual Dr. Harry G.M. Jopson Invitational on Saturday and several Eagles turned in strong performances. For the men, Melvin Queen won the 100 meters with a time of 10.86 seconds and Tony Konate won the 200 with a time of 22.18 seconds. Queen was third in the 200 and Konate placed third in the 100. Nathan Rittenhouse set a new meet record in winning the 5000 meters with a time of 15:28.03. Brandon Spalding took third and also bettered the previous meet record. Brandon Copeland won the long jump with a best jump of 23 feet and Donte Montague won the high jump at 6 feet. Jeff Tolley placed in three events, winning the pole vault, taking second in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the 400 hurdles. For the women Courtney Hartman won the 100 with a time of 12.91. The Bridgewater College track teams turned in solid performances on a cold day at the Roanoke College Invitational held Saturday.The women placed fourth out of 11 teams with 78.5 points while the men placed third out of 11 teams with 109 points. Top performances for the women included second place finishes by Courtney Hartman in the 100 meters, Megan Hicks in the high jump and the 4x100 relay team. Running on the relay team were Hartman, Jessica Timberlake, Sammy Mizerak and Jill Wattai. Wattai also placed third in the 100 and 200 and fourth in the long jump. Hartman placed in the 400 and javelin while April Miller placed in the hammer, shot and discus. For the men, sprinters Tony Konate and Melvin Queen picked up right where they left off in the indoor season. Konate edged Queen to win the 100 and then both sprinters ran on winning relay teams. They were joined on the winning 4x100 team by R.J. Davis and Brandon Copeland. In the sprint medley relay they were part of the winning team along with Jacob Griffin and Stanley Peyton, Jr. Other top performances were turned in by Peyton who won the 800, Copeland who placed second in the long jump and Nathan Rittenhouse who took second in the 5000. Bridgewater's three participants at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships were unable to advance to the finals during Friday's competition.In the 55 meters Melvin Queen and Tony Konate were unable to make Saturday's final. Queen ran a 6.51 and Konate posted a 6.55 in Friday's heats. In the long jump Brandon Copeland's best effort was 22 feet, 3.75 inches. Bridgewater College freshman Tony Konate was named the South Region Track Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday evening prior to the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships.Konate (Reston, Va.) placed second in the 55 meters and 200 meters at ODAC Indoor Championships. He had the fastest time of the season in the ODAC in the 55 at 6.40 and had the second-fastest tine in the 200. Konate qualified for the NCAA Championship meet in the 55 meters. |
