Shane Stevens, Head Coach
Now in his 25th season as the architect of the
Bridgewater Track and Field program, Shane Stevens has molded the
Eagles into one of the most competitive and respected teams in Division
III Track and Field.
Under his guidance, the BC
men's squad captured the 1997 ODAC indoor and outdoor titles and had
two members earn Division III All-American status. Stevens also led the
1998 women's outdoor team to their first ever conference title while
sending several athletes to the NCAA championships. He has taken
athletes to 16 national championship meets. The 1997 NCAA Division III
South/Southeast Region Coach of the Year, Stevens has also been tabbed
as the ODAC Men's Coach of the Year nine times and has earned that
award four times for the ODAC Women's Coach of the Year, including in
2000 when the women's team finished second in the
ODAC.
Stevens is a 1979 graduate of Bridgewater and
was an All-ODAC defensive back and captain of the BC football team. He
also holds a master's in Business Administration from James Madison
University. He serves as an instructor in the college's Math and
Computer Science department along with his coaching
duties.
Stevens lives in Mt. Crawford along with his
wife, Xan. The couple has two boys-Leland and Carson.
Lori H. Schrock, Assistant
Coach
Lori Hertzler Schrock begins her sixth season as the
Men's and Women's Head Cross-Country Coach and her eleventh season as
the assistant Track coach for middle and long distances. Coach Schrock
has taken the endurance program to new heights through her training
philosophies and bringing in solid high school runners. Workouts are
based on solid exercise physiology principles and experience. Each and
every step has a specific purpose and result in mind. Athletes are
encouraged to ask questions and to add their thoughts in the training
process.
In the past five Cross-Country seasons,
Schrock has coached twelve athletes to All-State honors, eleven
athletes to All-Conference honors, four to All-South/Southeast Regional
honors and an NCAA National Qualifier. In 2006 Coach Schrock was named
Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the men's team's second place
finish at the O.D.A.C. championship.
Since coming to
Bridgewater as an assistant track coach in 1997, Schrock has coached
numerous athletes to new levels in the throws, jumps, hurdles, and
distances. Currently, Shcrock focuses on the middle and long distance
runners. This past spring the vast majority of athletes coached by
Shrock set new personal records. Nine of those personal bests became
new school records. Schrock has also coached 53 athletes to 178
performances on the College's Top 15 All-Time performance lists in the
long and middle distance events. In the O.D.A.C., Schrock has coached
over thirty athletes to All-Conference honors including the 2004 Men's
Track Athlete of the Meet.
Schrock, a 1993 graduate
of Eastern Mennonite University, was a four-year letter winner in Track
and Field and three year letter winner in cross-country and track.
Schrock won thirteen track events at the O.D.A.C. Invitational meet
during her career. Schrock also held the school record in the 400m
intermediate hurdles at her college alma mater for fifteen years. At
one time Schrock was the Virginia Independent School state high school
champion and tied the state record for the 300m intermediate hurdles.
Before coming to Bridgewater College, Lori was an assistant track coach
at EMU with BC alum, Matt Munson for four
years.
Coach Schrock holds a Master's of Science in
Kinesiology from James Madison University and several professional
certifications including; Certified Strength & Conditioning
Specialist from the NSCA, USA Track & Field Level II Endurance
Coach, USA Track & Field Level II Sprint & Hurdles
Coach, ACSM Health & Fitness Instructor with Enhanced
Qualifications, and ACE Personal Trainer. Currently, Schrock is
finishing her USA Track & Field Level III Endurance Coach
certification.
In addition to her coaching duties,
Schrock is Program Director for the Funkhouser Wellness
Center.
Schrock resides in Mt. Crawford with her
husband, Bryan and son, Jon.
Melissa Baker Nice, Assistant
Coach
Melissa Baker Nice is currently in her second year as
an assistant coach at Bridgewater. A 2001 BC graduate, Nice coaches the
men and women's hurdlers and holds a USATF level 1 coaching
certification.
While at BC, Nice compiled 22 ODAC
track and field championships, qualified for the NCAA meet four times,
and was a NCAA All-American twice in the 400-meter dash and the
400-meter hurdles. She earned the ODAC athlete of the year award in
1999, 2000, and 2001. Nice currently holds 10 Bridgewater College track
and field records (individual and relays), and two ODAC conference
records.
Melissa is married to Dr. Spencer Nice, a
2001 graduate of BC. They live in Waynesboro, VA and have one son
Aaron, and are expecting a second baby in August 2006. |
