  • Eagles improve provisional marks - 05/16/2008

  • bcopelandSeveral Bridgewater College track athletes improved their NCAA provisional qualifying marks Friday during the Eastern Mennonite University Last Chance Meet.

    BC senior Brandon Copeland virtually assured himself a spot in the NCAA Championships in the long jump. Copeland jumped 7.13 meters (23 feet, 4.75 inches).

    The 4x100 men's relay team also improved its chances of going to the national meet with a time of 41.50 seconds - the second-fastest time in BC history. The team of Copeland, Melvin Queen, Tony Konate and Tyler Beiler moved into the Top 15 in Division III.

    Eagles freshman Christina Rhodes also improved her provisional mark by clearing 11 feet, 7.75 inches in the pole vault. Rhodes set a new BC record in the event, breaking her own record.

    Other winners at Friday's meet included Stanley Peyton in the 800 with a time of 1:54.44, Nathan Turner in the shot with a toss of 16.42 meters and the women's 4x100 relay team with a time of 48.15 seconds.
  • Hartman sets new record in heptathlon - 05/11/2008

  • hartmanBridgewater College sophomore Courtney Hartman set a new BC record in the heptathlon this weekend at Generals Combined Event Challenge hosted by Washington & Lee.

    Hartman finished the two-day, seven-event competition with 4,380 points.

    Hartman also improved her point total as a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Division III meet. This weekend's effort moves Hartman into the Top 10 in Division III in the event.
  • Rhodes meets NCAA provisional mark - 05/10/2008

  • ODACtf Bridgewater College freshman Christina Rhodes met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the pole vault Saturday at Christopher Newport.

    Rhodes set a new BC record in the pole vault as she cleared 3.51 meters (11 feet, 6.25 inches).

    Jill Wattai placed second in the 200 with a time of 25.51 seconds.

    For the men, Melvin Queen placed fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.83 and Tony Konate placed third in the 200 with a time of 22.11. Stanley Peyton placed second in the 800 with a time of 1:55.24 and Nathan Turner won the shot put with a throw of 17.14 meters.
  • Smith places fifth in IHSA National Show - 05/09/2008

  • Cary Smith Bridgewater College's Cary Smith placed fifth Friday at the IHSA National Show in Los Angeles.

    Clark finished fifth in a class of 10 riders in the Walk-Trot-Canter Equitation class.

    Kristin Putnam of St. Lawrence University (NY) placed first in the class.

    Earlier at the national show, BC's Lindsay Clark placed third in Open Equitation Over Fences.
  • Clark places third at IHSA National Show - 05/09/2008

  • Lindsay ClarkBridgewater College sophomore Lindsay Clark placed third at the IHSA National Show in Los Angeles.

    Clark finished third in a class of 10 riders in the Open Equitation Over Fences.

    Sarah Spainhour of Clemson University placed first in the class and UCLA rider Savannah Cook finished second.

    Bridgewater's Cary Smith will compete today in Walk-Trot-Canter Equitation.
  • Elkins earns baseball academic honor - 05/08/2008

  • Drew ElkinsBridgewater College's Drew Elkins has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 3 College Division baseball second team.

    Elkins is a sophomore, athletic training major from Lynchburg, Va.

    Elkins, a second-team All-ODAC selection at first base, hit for a .343 average. He had 32 RBIs and committed just two errors at first base. He also made 13 appearances on the mound and finished with a 1-0 record and a 4.96 ERA.
  • Baseball lands five on All-ODAC second team - 05/07/2008

  • Aaron ReadBridgewater College placed five players in the All-ODAC second team released Wednesday by the conference office.

    Eagles selected to the second team were Mike Lenox (DH), Drew Elkins (1B), Aaron Read (2B), Andrew Chrismer (C) and Mike Graves (OF).

    Named honorable mention on the All-ODAC team was pitcher Nolan Shaffer. Brad Buracker was the Eagles’ representative on the All-ODAC sportsmanship team.

    Lenox finished the season with a .335 average and 29 RBIs. He tied for the team lead in homers with six. Elkins hit for a .343 average. He had 32 RBIs and committed just two errors at first base.. Read led the team in hitting with a .345 average. He had 32 RBIs and a team-high 13 doubles. Chrismer finished with a .315 batting average and led the Eagles in runs batted in with 36. Graves finished the season with a .306 batting average. [All-ODAC Baseball Team]
  • Bowman, Butler named first-team all-region - 05/06/2008

  • Kaitlyn BowmanCaity ButlerBridgewater College juniors Caity Butler and Kaitlyn Bowman were named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Atlantic Region softball first team released Tuesday.

    Bulter was named to the first team as a utility player while Bowman was one of the at-large selections to the first team.

    Bowman led the Eagles in hitting this season with a .403 average. She finished with eight homers and 34 RBIs. Butler hit .370 for the Eagles with eight homers and a team-high 42 RBIs.

    Butler earned the first-team all-region honor for the second straight year. Bowman was a first-team all-region selection in 2006 and a second-team pick in 2007. [NFCA All-Region Teams]
  • Three Eagles earn honorable mention in lacrosse - 05/02/2008

  • Sarah WadeLauren KondorColleen SchwindThree Bridgewater College Eagles were named to the All-ODAC lacrosse team released Friday by the conference office.

    Seniors Sarah Wade and Lauren Kondor and sophomore Colleen Schwind received honorable mention on the all-conference team.

    Wade was second on the team in scoring with 24 goals and 16 assists. She led the Eagles in ground balls and caused turnovers. Wade led the ODAC and ranked No. 7 in Division III in caused turnovers with 2.73 per game.

    Kondor finished the season with 14 goals and seven assists. She was second on the team in ground balls and caused turnovers.

    Schwind finished the season with 164 saves as the BC goalkeeper. She led the ODAC in saves with 10.93 per game.
  • Eagles place two on All-ODAC softball first team - 05/02/2008

  • Kaitlyn BowmanCaity ButlerBridgewater College placed two players on the All-ODAC softball first team released Friday by the conference office.

    Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Bowman and junior utility player Caity Butler were named to the first team. Senior outfielder Jennifer Hall received All-ODAC honorable mention.

    Bowman led the Eagles in hitting this season with a .403 average. She finished with eight homers and 34 RBIs.

    Butler hit .370 for the Eagles with eight homers and a team-high 42 RBIs.

    Hall hit .310 for the Eagles with 31 runs scored. [All-ODAC Softball Team]
  • Remsch-Radke duo ranked No. 11 in region - 05/02/2008

  • Brian RemschRyan RadkeBridgewater College's No. 1 doubles team was ranked in the latest Atlantic South Region rankings.

    Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke, both juniors are ranked No. 11 in the region in doubles - one of five ODAC doubles teams ranked in the Top 15.

    The Remsch-Radke duo was recently selected to the All-ODAC First Team in doubles.
  • Men's hoops selects 2008-09 captains - 05/02/2008

  • Rob RiceKris CecilThe Bridgewater College men's basketball team has selected its captains for the 2008-09 season. Kris Cecil, a 5-8 senior guard from Amherst, Va., and Rob Rice, a 6-3 senior guard from Mechanicsville, Va., were chosen by their teammates to serve as team captains.

    "Kris and Rob are two outstanding student-athletes and will be excellent team leaders for us,' Bridgewater head coach Bill Leatherman said. "Kris is more vocal and as our point guard has a true understanding of the game and the team concept. Rob is probably the hardes worker we've had at BC since Ricky Easterling and Kyle Williford."

    Also for 2008-09, the ODAC will be implementing an unbalanced league schedule for men's basketball for the first time.

    "This is something the coaches have worked toward for several years. We were playing too many league games and basically beating ourselves up," Leatherman stated. "The addition of Randolph College helped bring about the change. Our league is just too tough to play 20 league games. This gives us all scheduling flexibility."

    Next year's 25-game schedule features a Nov. 18 contest at Division I Radford University.
  • Queen meets provisional mark in 100 meters - 05/01/2008

  • ODACtf Bridgewater College senior Melvin Queen met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the 100 meters Thursday at the Liberty Twilight Invitational.

    Queen placed fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.58 seconds to meet the NCAA standard.

    Bridgewater’s Nathan Turner placed first in the shot put with his best throw of the season at 56 feet, 6 inches. Turner currently ranks second in the nation in the event.

    Tony Konate had a strong showing with Top 10 efforts in both sprints. Konate finished eighth in the 100 at 10.91 and ninth in the 200 with a time of 21.80.

    Stanley Peyton and Jacob Griffin both placed in the Top 10 in the 800. Peyton placed sixth with a time of 1:54.76 and Griffith finished 10th with a time of 1:56.09.

    Nathan Rittenhouse took third in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 9:33.20.

    For the women, Jill Wattai just missed the provisional qualifying standard in the 200 as she ran a 25.34.

    The 4x100 relay took first with a time of 48.35 and Sammy Mizerak placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 102 feet, 4 inches.
  • Women's tennis players earn All-ODAC honors - 04/30/2008

  • Alissa MichaelBridgewater College placed two players on the All-ODAC first-team in singles and two doubles teams also made first-team on the All-ODAC squad.

    Earning first-team honors in singles were Jessica Hill and Alissa Michael.

    Hill posted a 9-2 record at No. 4 singles and a 4-1 mark when playing No. 3. Hill was7-3 vs. ODAC foes. Michael was 8-4 at No. 3 singles and 4-2 at No. 2. She finished with a 9-3 mark against conference opponents.

    Michael and Kelly O’Connell were named to the All-ODAC first team doubles squad along with Hilary Teeter and Diana Ricker.

    The Michael-O’Connell duo posted a 9-2 record at No. 3 doubles and a 6-2 mark at No. 2 doubles. They were 10-3 against ODAC competition. Teeter and Ricker played No. 1 doubles throughout the spring and finished with a 12-2 overall record. They were 10-1 within the ODAC.

    Four Eagles – Teeter, Ricker, Pipkin and Megan Mathias - were named to the All-ODAC second team in singles.

    Teeter finished with a 9-9 overall record and a 7-6 mark against ODAC foes while playing No. 1 singles. Ricker was 10-3 overall and 9-1 against conference competition while splitting time at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Pipkin finished 10-4 overall and 6-2 within the conference at No. 2 singles. Mathias posted a 13-5 overall record and a 9-3 conference mark while splitting most of her matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

    The Hill-Pipkin pair earned second-team All-ODAC honors in doubles. They were 10-3 overall and 6-1 against ODAC competition.
  • Copeland signs free agent contract with Browns - 04/28/2008

  • Brandon CopelandBridgewater College senior wide receiver Brandon Copeland has signed a contract with NFL's Cleveland Browns.

    Copeland signed as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of the NFL Draft on Sunday. Copeland's agent received calls from the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns. Copeland decided to sign with the Browns, and will fly out to Cleveland on Thursday.

    Copeland, also an All-American track performer for the Eagles, caught 53 passes for 675 yards and nine touchdowns. He finished his career with 127 receptions for 1,924 yards and 21 touchdowns. He ranks No. 2 all-time at BC in receiving yards.

    Copeland is the second BC player in recent years to sign a pro contract. Jermaine Taylor was in camp with both Green Bay and Tampa Bay and played one year in NFL Europe.

  • Three Eagles named to All-Tournament team - 04/27/2008

  • ODAC softball logoBridgewater College placed three players on the ODAC All-Tournament team announced Sunday at the conclusion of the conference tournament.

    Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Bowman, freshman second baseman Emily Morris and freshman third baseman Lauren Childress were named to the all-tourney squad.

    Bowman led all hitters in the tournament, hitting for a .571 average in four games. Morris hit .429 and Childress hit .333 in the tournament.
  • Teeter named Scholar-Athlete of the Year - 04/27/2008

  • Hillary TeeterBridgewater senior Hilary Teeter picked up one of the top conference awards Sunday when she received the ODAC Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor.

    Teeter finished the season with a 9-9 record at No. 1 singles. In doubles she was 13-2 at No. 1 doubles and 3-1 at No. 2 doubles.

    Teeter is a senior communications studies major from Gettysburg, Pa.
  • Eagles fall to W&L in championship match - 04/27/2008

  • wt logoThe Bridgewater College women’s tennis team lost in the championship match of the ODAC tournament Sunday, losing 9-0 to the nation’s top ranked team, the Washington & Lee Generals.

    W&L won all singles matches in straight sets and also swept the three doubles matches.

    W&L is now 24-0 on the season while the Eagles finish with a 15-4 record with two of the losses coming against the Generals.

  • Women's tennis reaches title match! - 04/26/2008

  • wt logoThe Bridgewater College women’s tennis team advanced to the championship match of the ODAC tournament with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Hollins on Saturday.

    The Eagles will meet the nation’s top-ranked team, the Washington & Lee Generals, for the title Sunday at 10 a.m.

    The Eagles opened play against Hollins by taking a 2-1 lead after doubles action. Hilary Teeter and Diana Ricker won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles and Jessica Hill and Megan Mathias won 8-5 at No. 3. BC’s No. 2 team, Alissa Michael and Kelly O’Connell lost a tough 9-8 decision to Hollins’ Nathalie Faure and Maggie Bai.

    Bai and Faure picked up wins for Hollins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but the Eagles win three of the remaining four flights to win the match.

    Bai defeated Teeter 7-6, 6-3 and Faure held off Michael 7-6, 6-4. Hollins’ other singles win came at No. 5 where Anne Ailstock defeated Mathias in three sets.

    Hill held off Sarah Budrus to win the third flight for the Eagles while Ricker and O’Connell posted convincing wins at No. 4 and No. 6. Ricker won her match at No. 4 6-1, 6-1 while O’Connell took a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6.

    The Eagles are now 15-3 overall.
  • Softball falls to Virginia Wesleyan - 04/26/2008

  • ODAC softball logoThe Bridgewater softball team watched its season come to an end Saturday night as the Eagles dropped a 4-1 decision to Virginia Wesleyan.

    The Marlins led 2-0 after scoring a single run in the top of the fifth, but the Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to get on the board.

    Laura Barry singled to lead off the fifth and Drew Rutledge followed with a single, advancing pinch-runner Jessica Dunn to second. Dunn scored on a single by Jennifer Hall, making the score 2-1.

    The Marlins added a pair of key insurance runs in the top of the seventh and the Eagles went down in order in the bottom of the inning.

    The Eagles finish the season with a 25-15 overall record.
  • Baseball eliminated by Marlins, 5-3 - 04/26/2008

  • ODAC baseball logoVirginia Wesleyan defeated Bridgewater College, 5-3, Saturday to eliminate the Eagles from the ODAC baseball tournament.

    The Marlins took andearly 5-1 lead, with just one of the five runs earned.

    Bridgewater scored twice in the fourth to pull within two runs. Drew Elkins singled and scored on a double by Brett Howell making the score 5-2. Howell moved to third on a groundout and then scored on an RBI-groundout by Drew Easter, making the score 5-3.

    Marlins’ starter Gary Bulman limited the Eagles to one hit over the final five innings and finished with a complete game five-hitter to pick up the victory.

    Alex Foltz kept the Eagles in the game with 6.2 innings of shutout relief. Foltz allowed just three hits while striking out eight and walking none.

    The Eagles finish the season with a 24-17-1 overall record.
  • Softball eliminates Guilford, 6-5 - 04/26/2008

  • ODAC softball logoBridgewater College pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Guilford, 6-5, and stay alive at the ODAC softball tournament.

    The Eagles took a 5-2 lead into the seventh, but the Quakers battled back and tied the score.

    Kaitlyn Bowman and Caity Butler singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and Lauren Childress followed with an infield single. Bowman scored on a throwing error on the play for the winning run.

    Bowman led the Bridgewater offense with a 4-for-4 effort with two runs score and two RBIs. Childress, Jennifer Hall and Emily Morris added two hits each.

    The Eagles will play Virginia Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game. The Marlins eliminated Roanoke, 1-0, Saturday.
  • Softball goes 1-1 at ODAC tournament - 04/26/2008

  • ODAC softball logoThe Brdgewater softball team won its opener Friday before being sent to the loser's bracket by Lynchburg College.

    The Eagles defeated Roanoke 5-4 in an 11-inning marathon before losing the No. 1 seed Lynchburg 15-7.

    Jordan Burkholder drove home the winning run in the top of the 11th to lift the Eagles to the victory. Emily Morris and Kaitlyn Bowman were both 2-for-4 and Caity Butler drove home two runs.

    Ashley Gills pitched 10 stellar innings to earn the victory and Becky Schmidt hurled to the 11th inning to pick up the save. In the nightcap, Lynchburg belted four homers in the bottom of the first to take a 7-1 lead.

    Bridgewater battled back to within two, 9-7, on Bowman's three-run homer in the fourth, but the Maroons were able to pull away again for the victory.

    The Eagles meet Guilford on Saturday at noon in an elimination game.
  • Baseball team stays alive - 04/25/2008

  • ODAC baseball logoThe Bridgewater baseball team kept its championship hopes alive with a 4-3 upset victory over No. 1 seed Lynchburg College on Friday at City Stadium in Lynchburg.

    Drew Elkins scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch and Alex Foltz worked out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win for Bridgewater.

    Starter Fred Duquette pitched seven strong innings to keep the Eagles in the game. Duquette allowed three runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked five.

    Foltz pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the victory for the Eagles.

    Bridgewater will meet Virginia Wesleyan at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon in an elimination game.
  • Women's tennis advances to semifinals - 04/25/2008

  • wt logoBridgewater College advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC Women's Tennis Tournament with a convincing 9-0 victory Friday over Lynchburg College.

    The Eagles took a quick 3-0 lead after doubles play. BC dominated the matches, losing a total of just three games. At No. 1, Hilary Teeter and Diana Ricker won 8-2. Alissa Michael and Kelly O'Connell teamed up for an 8-1 victory. Jessica Hill and Meghan Mathias took an 8-0 win at No. 3.

    The Eagles won all six singles matches in straight sets. Winning for the Eagles were Teeter at No. 1, Michael at No. 2, Hill at No. 3, Mathias at No. 4, O'Connell at No. 5 and Jenna Bishop at No. 6.

    The second-seeded Eagles will meet No. 3 Hollins in semifinal action Saturday.

  • Baseball blanked in first-round game - 04/24/2008

  • ODAC baseball logoRandolph-Macon shut out the Bridgewater College Eagles, 4-0, in the opening round of the ODAC baseball tournament Thursday at City Stadium in Lynchburg.

    Randolph-Macon's Byron Mendenhall and Nick Simons combined to blank the Eagles on seven hits. Mendenhall pitched solid stellar innings, allowing five hits. He struck out 12 and walked just one. Simons allowed two hits in two scoreless innings to pick up the save.

    Mendenhall and BC's Nolan Shaffer matched zeroes until the Yellow Jackets took the lead in the fifth.

    With one out, Bruno Gora singled and took second on a wild pitch. Jay Lichter reached on a throwing error, but Gora was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play for the second out of the inning. Ryan Dickerson then walked and Kevin Davis singled to load the sacks. Shaffer hit Adam Carpenter with a pitch to force in the first run and Greg Meleski worked Shaffer for a bases-loaded walk to make the score 2-0.

    The Yellow Jackets increased the lead in the sixth when Michael Wallace doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a dropped fly ball, giving R-MC a 3-0 lead.

    The Yellow Jackets added their final run in the seventh when Meleski blooped a double down the rightfield line and scored on Wallace's second double of the game.

    Shaffer pitched a strong game in defeat, allowing just eight hits and one earned run in his complete-game effort. The BC righthander struck out nine and walked three.

    The Eagles will try to stave off elimination Friday afternoon at 3 when they meet No. 1 seed Lynchburg.
  • Women's tennis seeded No. 2 in ODAC tourney - 04/24/2008

  • wt logoThe Bridgewater College tennis team is seeded second for this weekend's ODAC women's tennis tournament.

    The Eagles finished the regular season with a 9-1 conference record, trailing only undefeated Washington & Lee in the standings.

    All matches in the ODAC tournament will be played on or near the Sweet Briar College campus.

    Bridgewater opens play Friday at 1:30 p.m. against the winner os the Lynchburg College vs. Emory & Henry College match. The contest will be played at the Amherst Middle School.

  • Women's tennis wraps up second place - 04/24/2008

  • Hillary TeeterThe Bridgewater College women’s tennis team clinched second place in the ODAC regular season standings with a 7-2 victory Wednesday over Virginia Wesleyan College.

    The Eagles got off to a fast start by sweeping the doubles. Hilary Teeter and Marlena Pipkin took a close 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles. BC rolled in the other two matches with Alissa Michael and Kelly O’Connell winning 8-2 at No. 2 while Jessica Hill and Megan Mathias took an 8-1 victory at No. 3.

    Bridgewater controlled play at the bottom of the singles ladder, winning at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to seal the win.

    Michael took a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 and Hill followed with a three-set victory at No. 4. Mathias at No. 5 and O’Connell at No. 6 dominated their matches. Mathias won 6-0, 6-1 and O’Connell won 6-0, 6-0.

    The Eagles finish the regular season with a 13-3 overall record and a 9-1 mark in the ODAC.
  • Softball opens tournament against Roanoke - 04/23/2008

  • ODAC sblogoBridgewater College, seeded No. 5, will meet No. 4 seed Roanoke College in the opening round of the ODAC softball tournament Friday at 5 p.m.

    The Eagles and Roanoke split a doubleheader during the regular season. The Eagles won the first game of the doubleheader 9-6 while the Maroons took the second game, 9-1. Bridgewater is 23-13 overall while the Maroons are 28-8.

    If the Eagles defeat Roanoke, they will play No. 1 seed Lynchburg at 7:00 p.m. Friday night. If the Eagles lose to Roanoke, they will play Saturday at noon.

  • Highfill named to NFF Hampshire Honor Society - 04/23/2008

  • Jeff HighfillBridgewater College senior Jeff Highfill was recently selected for the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society.

    The 2008 NFF Hampshire Honor Society is comprised of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a 3.2 grade point average or better.

    A total of 439 players from 226 schools qualified for membership in the society's second year, an increase of more than 25 percent from the inaugural class in 2007.

    The NFF Hampshire Honor Society capitalizes on the NFF's current National Scholar-Athlete program, greatly expanding the number os scholar-athletes the NFF can recognize each year and further strengthening its leadership role in encouraging academic performance by the student-athletes who play football at the more than 700 colleges and universities with football programs.

    Highfill was twice named the ODAC Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was named to the 2006 Academic All-American first team and was a second team Academic All-American pick in 2007.

  • Jordan BurkholderBridgewater College freshman Jordan Burkholder was named to the VaSID College Division all-state women's basketball team released Wednesday.

    Burkholder, the ODAC Freshman of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player at the ODAC Tournament, led the Eagles in scoring this past season with 14.8 average. She also averaged 5.0 rebounds and led the team in steals with 97 and assists with 75.
  • Redwood takes fourth at ODAC golf tournament - 04/22/2008

  • Shawn HarperBridgewater College’s Mike Redwood shot a final round 76 Monday to finish fourth at the ODAC Golf Championship played at Poplar Grove Golf Course.

    Redwood finished with a three-day total of 225 three shots behind individual medalist Nathaniel James of Washington & Lee.

    As a team, the Eagles posted a 313 on the final day of competition and finished in seventh place.

    W&L won the team title and claimed the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a three-day total 909. Guilford finished in second place, 10 strokes behind the Generals.

    Redwood was named to the all-tournament team and also received All-ODAC honorable mention.

    BC senior Shawn Harper was named to the All-ODAC first team. Harper finished the year with a 76.8 scoring average.

    Bridgewater’s Adam Rhodes and Guilford’s Brian Creghan were named Sportsmen of the Year.

    W&L’s James was named the ODAC Player of the Year and the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar Athlete of the Year. W&L’s Gavin Colliton was named the ODAC Coach of the Year and Randolph-Macon’s Michael Shrader was named Rookie of the Year.

    The Eagles will open the season on the road at Averett before returning to Jopson Field to host Shenandoah and Averett. BC will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule on the road against Lycoming.

  • golflogoBridgewater's Mike Redwood fired one of Sunday's best rounds to move into fourth place at the ODAC Men's Golf Championship at Poplar Grove Golf Club.

    Redwood finished with a 71 Sunday for a two-day total of 149. Redwood is four strokes behind individual leader Nathaniel James of W&L. James turned in the best round Sunday with a 70.

    The Eagles continued to struggle as a team, shooting a 314 Sunday to drop to seventh place with a 639 total. BC is just 11 strokes behind third-place teams Randolph-Macon and Hampden-Sydney.

    W&L holds a commanding 28-shot lead over Guilford College in the team standings.

  • BC men win ODAC track championship! - 04/19/2008

  • Melvin QueenThe Bridgewater College men’s track team ended Lynchburg College’s 10-year domination of ODAC outdoor track and field as the Eagles won the ODAC Championship meet Saturday at Roanoke College.

    The Eagles also awarded two of the conference's top honors as Shane Stevens was named Men's Outdoor Track Coach of the Year and Damien Ward was named Rookie of the Year.

    Saturday's honor marked the seventh time Stevens has been named the men's outdoor track coach of the year. He also received the top coaching honor this year during the indoor season.

    The Eagles held a 72-29 lead over Lynchburg after the first day of events and the deficit proved to be too much for the Hornets to overcome. Bridgewater finished with 232 points while the Hornets finished with 200.

    On Saturday, the Eagles dominated the sprints.

    In the 100, Melvin Queen made history when he became the first male athlete to win the 100 four straight years. Queen won Saturday’s event with a time of 11.00. The Eagles made it a 1-2-3 finish with Tony Konate taking second and Brandon Copeland third. Tyler Beiler finished fifth for BC.

    In the 200, Konate won the event with a time of 21.86 and Queen placed second.

    Stanley Peyton took a pair of third place finishes in the 400 and 800 and Jacob Griffin placed fourth in both the 800 and 1500.

    Nathan Rittenhouse finished a grueling three days in the distance events. One day after winning the 3000 meter steeplechase, Rittenhouse placed third in the 1500 and fourth in the 5000.

    BC also fared well in the hurdles. In the 110 hurdles, JT Painter placed second with Damien Ward in third and Keenan Fenwick sixth. Ward came back to add a fourth-place finish in the 400 hurdles.

    The BC relay teams also turned in big efforts. The men’s 4x100 finished first with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 41.73 seconds. The runners were Queen, Konate, Copeland and Beiler. The time was also a new championship meet record.

    The 4x400 ran its best time of the season to finish second. Running a 3:26.34 were Julius Delbridge, Ward, Peyton and Griffin.

    In the field events, Nathan Turner made it a clean sweep in the throws by winning the discus with a distance 44.61 meters. Thomas Bell placed third and C.J. Thomas was fifth in the discus for BC. Turner won the shot and hammer on Friday. His winning shot put effort of 16.69 meters was a new championship meet record and a new ODAC overall record for the event.

    The Eagles took three places in both the triple jump and javelin. Leigh Bradley placed second in the triple jump followed by Donte Montague in the third and Jeremy Lewis in sixth.

    Josh King placed third in the javelin followed by Matt Armstrong in fifth and Fenwick in the sixth.

    Rounding out the BC scoring were John Harris and Armstrong who placed fourth and fifth in the pole vault.

    The women’s track team finished the day with a solid third-place team showing.

    Bridgewater finished with 80 points, trailing Roanoke with 218 and Washington & Lee with 149.

    Sophomore Courtney Hartman paced the Eagles with a strong overall effort. Hartman placed in six different individual events and ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay and the second-place 4x100 relay.

    Saturday, Hartman placed fourth in the 100, second in the 200, sixth in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the javelin.

    The highlight of the meet for the Eagles came in the 4x100 where they battled Roanoke. Roanoke entered the event with the best time in the nation and they bettered that mark, winning Saturday with a time of 46.84.

    The Eagles placed second with a time of 47.83 – the fourth-fastest time in the nation. Running for BC were Hartman, Jill Wattai, Samantha Phillips and Sammy Mizerak. The time was a new BC record and met the NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

    The same four runners won the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:09.64.

    The Eagles had one individual champion Saturday when freshman Christina Rhodes won the pole vault, clearing the bat at 3.21 meters.

    Wattai, Samantha Phillps, Mizerak and Nicole Phillips each placed in two individual events Saturday. Wattai was sixth in 100 and third in the 200. Samantha Phillips placed sixth in the 200 and fourth in the 400. Mizerak took fifth in the 400 hurdles and second in the javelin.   • golflogoThe Bridgewater College golf team was in sixth place at the ODAC Golf Championships after Saturday's first-round at Poplar Grove Golf Club.

    Washington & Lee led after Round 1 with a 302 total followed by Hampden-Sydney at 310, Roanoke with a 320, Guilford with a 321, Randolph-Macon at 323 and the Eagles at 325.

    Virginia Wesleyan with a 330 total and Emory & Henry with a 394 rounded out the first-day standings.

    Sunday's second round is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
  • Baseball loses two at Lynchburg - 04/19/2008

  • Aaron ReadLynchburg College swept an ODAC baseball doubleheader Saturday from Bridgewater College, winning the opener 3-0 and then taking the second game 7-6 in 10 innings.

    In the opener, Joe Devlin improved to 7-0 on the season by blanking Bridgewater on a three-hitter. Devlin struck out four and walked one.

    Nolan Shaffer pitched will in a losing cause, allowing nine hits and three runs. He struck out four and walked one.

    In the second game, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Mike Graves led off with a single and took third on Aaron Read’s double. Drew Elkins singled home one run and the second run scored n a groundout by Mike Lenox.

    The lead didn’t last long as Jon Crews belted a solo homer in the bottom of the first to tie the score, 2-2.

    Bridgewater added two runs in the third and two more in the fifth to lead 6-3.

    Read led off the third with a double and scored on a single by Mitchell Edwards, making the score 3-2. Edwards scored on a single by Andy Chrismer to put the Eagles on top 4-2.

    In the fifth, Read singled and Mike Lenox belted a two-run homer for a 6-3 Bridgewater lead.

    The Hornets chipped away at the deficit scoring single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings to tie the score.

    In the 10th, Lenox hit two batters after retiring the leadoff hitter. Blake Stokely entered the game and recorded the second out before a wild pitch allowed the winning run to score.

    Bridgewater is now 25-15-1 overall and ends the conference regular season with an 11-7 record. Lynchburg improved to 28-9 overall and clinched the top seed in next week’s tournament with a 15-3 record. [Game 1 Boxscore][Game 2 Boxscore]
  • Softball drops twinbill to Marlins - 04/19/2008

  • Caity ButlerVirginia Wesleyan swept a pair of close games Saturday, defeating Bridgewater 3-1 and 5-4 in ODAC softball action.

    In the opener the Marlins Brittaney Brown best BC’s Ashley Gills in a pitcher’s duel.

    The Eagles scored first when Caity Butler belted a solo homer in the second, but the Marlins took the lead with two runs in the top of the third.

    Jackie Jarzynka led off the third with a walk and with two outs scored on a double by Kristin Mundie to tie the score. An error kept the inning alive and put runners at the corners. The Marlins then pulled off a double steal with Mundie scoring to give Virginia Wesleyan the lead. The Marlins added an insurance run in the fourth on Allison Cockrell’s solo homer.

    Brown picked up the win with a complete-game, four-hitter. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Gills allowed just two hits, but took the loss. She struck out six and walked one.

    In the second game, the Marlins pushed across an unearned run in the seventh to take a 5-4 victory.

    The teams exchanged runs in the first and then the Eagles took the lead with two runs in the third. With two outs, Kaitlyn Bowman singled and stole second. Butler then delivered a run-scoring single to give BC a 2-1 lead.

    Butler, who advanced to second on the throw home on her base hit, scored on a single by Jordan Burkholder, making the score 3-1.

    The Marlins tied the score with two runs in the top of the fourth. Mandy Nixon led off the inning with a towering homer to right to make it 3-2. Later in the inning, Maree Opland singled to drive home a run, tying the score at 3-3.

    Bridgewater responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead. Emily Morris singled to lead off the inning and Mallory Sandridge reached on a fielder’s choice to give BC runners at first and second with no outs. The runners move up on a sacrifice bunt and, with two outs, pinch-runner Lesli Dunn scored on an infield error, putting BC on top 4-3.

    Nixon singled home a run in the fifth to tie the score at 4-4 and Brown, pitching in relief, wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game tied.

    Nixon walked to lead off the seventh, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. She scored what proved to be the winning run on a throwing error.

    Brown pitched four innings in relief to pick up her second victory of the day. She allowed three hits and one unearned run.

  • BC men off to fast start at ODAC track meet - 04/19/2008

  • Nathan TurnerFive individual events were contested on the first day of the ODAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at Roanoke College and members of the Bridgewater College team took first in each event.

    The Eagles men got off to a strong start on the first day, scoring 73 points. Defending champion Lynchburg is second with 29 and things are expected to tighten up on Day 2 with the Hornets looking forward to several strong events.

    On the first day, Nathan Turner continued his season-long dominance of the throws by winning both the shot put and hammer. Turner won the shot with a throw of 16.65 meters. Teammates Nick Fawley and C.J. Thomas placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Turner won the hammer with a throw of 52 meters.

    The Eagles took three places in the both the long jump and high jump. In the long jump, Brandon Copeland won with a jump of 6.96 meters. Keenan Fenwick placed fourth and Tony Konate took fifth. In the high jump Leigh Bradley cleared the bar at 1.88 meters to win the event. Damien Ward placed second and Donte Montague was fourth.

    BC’s final points on Day 1 came from Nathan Rittenhouse who won the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 10:02.4.

    Several qualifying heats were also held Friday and the Eagles qualified several runners for Saturday’s finals.

    BC qualified four runners for the 100 meter finals with Melvin Queen and Konate posting the fastest tines in trials. The Eagles will send three runners to the 200 finals with Queen and Konate again among the fastest in trials.

    Stanley Peyton had the second-fastest time Friday to move on the 400 finals while Ward qualified for the 400 hurdle finals.

    The Eagles also made a strong showing in the 110 hurdles with four of the eight spots in the finals going to BC runners.

    Courtney Hartman placed in two events Friday to lead the Eagles women’s team on the first day of competition.

    Hartman placed fourth in the long jump and sixth in the high jump Friday. BC’s other points were earned by Erin Boston who tied for third in the high jump.

    In Friday’s preliminaries races, the BC women fared well. Hartman, Jill Wattai and Samantha Phillips qualified for Saturday’s finals in both the 100 and 200 meters.

    Hartman also qualified for the final in the 110 hurdles and Sammy Mizerak moved on to the 400 hurdles final with the second-fastest qualifying mark. [ODAC Meet, Day 1 Results]
  • Women's tennis defeats Hollins, 7-2 - 04/17/2008

  • Alissa MichaelBridgewater College picked up a key conference victory Thursday as the Eagles defeated Hollins, 7-2.

    The teams entered the day tied for second in the ODAC standings with 7-1 conference marks.

    Bridgewater grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles where Hilary Teeter and Diana Ricker won at No. 1 and Alissa Michael and Kelly O'Connell were victorious at No. 2. The Eagles almost made it a clean sweep, but Jessica Hill and Megan Mathias lost in a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles.

    The Eagles closed the match out with an impressive showing in singles action as BC won five of the six matches.

    Teeter, playing No. 1 for the Eagles, lost in split sets, but the rest of the ladder prevailed. Michael, Ricker, Hill, O'Connell and Mathias posted singles victories for the Eagles.
  • Two riders qualify for IHSA national show - 04/17/2008

  • Cary SmithLindsay ClarkTwo Bridgewater College riders earned a trip to the IHSA National Show with their performances in the recent Zones show hosted by Randolph College.

    Lindsay Clark was champion in Open Over Fences and Cary Smith was reserve champion in Walk-Trot-Canter at Zones. Riders needed to place in the top two in the class to earn a trip to nationals.

    This year's national show will be held at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center on May 8-11 in Burbank, California.
  • Eagles fall in ODAC men's tennis tourney - 04/16/2008

  • mt logoGuilford defeated Bridgewater College, 5-2, in a close match in the quarterfinal round of the ODAC Men's Tennis Tournament played Wednesday at the Bridgewater courts.

    The Quakers took a 3-0 lead after doubles play, including a 9-8 victory at No. 1 where Jose Ortiz and Caleb Kimbrough edged BC's Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke.

    The Eagles faced the daunting task of needing to win five of the six singles to extend their season and they didn't go down without a fight.

    Remsch orchestrated a stirring comeback at No. 1 singles. Ortiz raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first set, but Remsch rallied to win the set in a tiebreaker and then won the second set 6-2.

    Ryan Radke won at No. 2 in straight sets, but the Eagles were unable to pull out wins in close matches in the final four singles.

    Guilford's Mike Muir defeated Colin Saunders 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 and Will Mason-Deese defeated Brad DeWitt 6-3, 7-6 to clinch the match for the Quakers.

  • Baseball rallies for win over Shepherd - 04/16/2008

  • Mitchell EdwardsBridgewater College scored six runs in the eighth inning Wednesday to wipe out a 12-7 deficit and defeat Division II Shepherd 13-12.

    With one out in the eighth, Alex Hogge walked and moved to third on Brett Howell's double. Mike Graves then singled home Hogge to make the score 12-8. Aaron Read then walked to load the bases and Howell scored on a passed ball to pull the Eagles within three. Graves was out at home as he tried to score on another passed ball for the second out of the inning, but the Eagles were far from finished.

    Drew Elkins walked and Mike Lenox followed with a two-run double, making the score 12-11. Mitchell Edwards tied the game with a double and Andy Chrismer plated Edwards with a single to give the Eagles the lead, 13-12.

    The bullpen held Shepherd hitless over the final two innings as Blake Stokely worked the bottom of the eighth and Casey Hartman pitched the ninth to pick up the save. Chris Gramm was the winning pitcher, working 2.1 innings. He allowed three hits and three runs, all unearned. Gramm struck out four and did not walk a batter.

    The teams combined for 15 extra base hits - seven homers and eight doubles. Hitting home runs for the Eagles were Elkins, Edwards and Howell. Lenox had two doubles for BC while Graves, Edwards and Howell had one double each.

    With the victory, Bridgewter improved to 23-13-1 on the season.
  • Softball sweeps two from Sweet Briar - 04/15/2008

  • Kaitlyn BowmanBridgewater College swept an ODAC doubleheader Tuesday from Sweet Briar, winning the first game 5-3 and the second game 6-2.

    Becky Schmidt pitched three hitless innings in relief to pick up the victory in the first game. Caity Butler led the offense with a homer and two RBIs.

    In the second game, Kaitlyn Bowman was 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the offense. The three RBIs gave Bowman 154 career RBIs, breaking the Bridgewater record of 153 set by Kameron Tucker.

    Mallory Sandridge, Drew Rutledge and Elizabeth Smith each added two hits to BC's 13-hit attack. Jordan Burkholder also belted her first career homer.

    Lindsay Lam pitched a complete game to earn the victory for the Eagles. She allowed seven hits and struck out seven.

    The Eagles improved to 23-11 overall and 11-5 in the ODAC.
  • Men's tennis hosts Guilford in ODAC tourney - 04/15/2008

  • Golfers place third at W&L tournament - 04/14/2008

  • Shawn HarperThe Bridgewater College golfers placed third in the 36-hole Washington & Lee Buck Leslie Invitational played Monday at the Lexington Country Club.

    Longwood won the tournament with rounds of 286 and 295 for a total of 581, three strokes ahead of the W&L "Blue" team.

    Bridgewater put together rounds of 308 and 300 for a 608 total. Finishing behind the Eagles were Lynchburg, W&L "White", Southern Virginia and Emory & Henry.

    Shawn Harper finished with rounds of 77 and 69 to lead the Eagles with a 146 total. Harper placed fifth in the individual standings.

    Adam Rhodes placed 10th overall with rounds of 78 and 73 for a 151 total.

    Rounding out the BC scoring were: Nick Dean, 76-79 - 155; Mike Redwood, 77-79 - 156 and Aaron Whalen, 86-83 - 169.
  • Baseball takes 5-1 victory over Bishops - 04/14/2008

  • BC baseball logoAlex Foltz hurled a complete game and Andy Chrismer powered the offense with a triple and homer Monday to lead the Bridgewater College Eagles to a 5-1 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan.

    Foltz silenced the Bishops with a masterful three-hitter. He allowed a single to the first batter he faced and a a fifth-inning homer to Jason Webb. He allowed his third hit in the ninth inning. Foltz struck out three and walked four.

    The Eagles took the lead in the fourth when Mitchell Edwards singled in front of Chrismer's homer. Webb's homer in the fifth made it 2-1, but the Eagles got that run back in the bottom of the fifth inning as BC took a 3-1 lead.

    With two outs in the sixth, Drew Easter walked and Mike Graves singled. Easter then scored on a single by Aaron Read, giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead.

    The Eagles scored their final run in the seventh when Edwards scored on Chrismer's triple for a 5-1 BC lead.

  • Chrismer named ODAC Baseball Player of the Week - 04/14/2008

  • Andy ChrismerBridgewater College's Andy Chrismer was named the ODAC Baseball Player of the Week by the conference office Monday.

    Chrismer helped lead the Eagles to a 3-2 week by batting .647 and going 11-for-17. He went 2-for 3 with three RBIs in a win over Eastern Mennonite and 6-for-7 in a doubleheader sweep against Emory & Henry. Over the course of the week, he collected 10 RBIs and hit two homeruns to help get him a slugging percentage of 1.117.
  • Queen earns ODAC weekly track honor - 04/14/2008

  • Melvin QueenBridgewater College senior sprinter Melvin Queen was named the ODAC Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week by the conference office Monday.

    Queen won the 100 meters, 200 meters and ran on the winning 4x100 relay team to lead Bridgewater to the team title at the 18-team Messiah Invitational.

    Queen won the 100 in a time of 10.79, missing the NCAA provisional mark by 1/100th of a second. He won the 200 in 21.77 to set a new Bridgewater College record, this time missing the NCAA provisional mark by 2/100ths of a second. In the relay the Eagles won with a time of 42.02, again missing the NCAA provisional mark by 2/100ths of a second.
  • Teeter selected for weekly ODAC tennis honor - 04/14/2008

  • Hillary TeeterBridgewater College senior Hilary Teeter was named ODAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week by the conference office Monday.

    Teeter was 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 3-0 at No. 1 doubles this past week, all against conference competition. She won all three singles matches in straight sets, losing a total of just six games. In doubles, Teeter and partner Diana Ricker lost just two games in three matches.
  • Lacrosse falls to Quakers, 15-9 - 04/13/2008

  • Lauren KondorBridgewater's lacrosse season came to an end Sunday afternoon at Jopson Field as the Eagles fell to Guilford College, 15-9, in ODAC action.

    The Eagles fell behind 6-1 at the half, but the team put up a spirited battle in the second half, playing the Quakers on event terms. The early deficit, however, was too much to overcome as the Eagles finished the season with a 5-10 overall record and a 1-7 mark in the ODAC.

    Sarah Wade and Leslie Crawford led the Eagles as each player scored three goals. Lindsay Snyder, Sarah Bursey and Jordan Kwong added one goal apiece. Lauren Kondor finished with three assists and Bursey added two assists. Erin Cartwright and Brooke Barham also added one assist each.

    Colleen Schwind allowed 11 goals and finished with nine saves. Schwind entered the game ranked No. 5 in the nation with 129 saves on the season.
  • Women's tennis rolls past Guilford, 8-1 - 04/12/2008

  • RickerBridgewater College improved to 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the ODAC with a 6-3 victory Saturday over Guilford in women's tennis action.

    The Eagles led 3-0 after doubles and then won the first five singles flights - all in straight sets. Winning in singles were Hilary Teeter at No. 1, Alissa Michael at No. 2, Diana Ricker at No.3, Megan Mathias at No. 4 and Kelly O'Connell at No. 5. [Results]
  • Men's tennis defeats Guilford, 6-3 - 04/12/2008

  • Ryan RadkeBridgewater College improved to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in the ODAC with a 6-3 victory Saturday over Guilford.

    The Eagles led 3-0 after doubles and then split the six singles to clinch the victory. Ryan Radke at No. 2 singles, Chris Radke at No. 3 and Teddy Callow at No. 5 all won in straight sets in singles play. [Results]
  • BC men win at Messiah; women finish fourth - 04/12/2008

  • The Bridgewater College men’s track team scored 151 points to win the 18-team Messiah Invitational on Saturday and the women finished fourth in a field of 16 teams.

    Melvin Queen won both sprints, running a 10.79 to win the 100 and a 21.77 to win the 200. His time in the 200 set a new Bridgewater College record in the event.

    Nathan Turner continued to dominate the throws with two firsts and a third. Turner won the shot with a throw of 15.92 meters and the hammer with a throw of 51.77 meters. He also placed third in the discus.

    Nathan Rittenhouse also picked up a first for the Eagles by winning the 1500 meters with a time of 4:02.19.

    JT Painter won the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.27 seconds to lead a 1-2-3 sweep in the event for the Eagles. Damien Ward placed second and Keenan Fenwick finished third.

    Bridgewater’s 4x100 relay team also placed first with a time of 42.02.

    The Bridgewater women's 4x100 relay team broke the BC record for the second week in a row, running a 48.54 at Messiah. The time also met the NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the event.

    Samantha Phillips won the 200 for the Eagles with a time of 26.04 and placed second in the 400 with a time of 1:00.27.

    Erin Boston tied for seocond in the high jump and Sammy Mizerak placed fifth in three events - the long jump, triple jump and javelin. Courtney Hartman finished third in the heptathlon. [Messiah Meet Results]
  • Baseball sweeps E&H in ODAC action - 04/12/2008

  • Nolan ShafferBridgewater College scored 32 runs Saturday to sweep an ODAC baseball doubleheader at Emory & Henry. Bridgewater won the opener 15-8 and then rallied to win the second game, 17-14.

    In the opener, Nolan Shaffer struck out 14 batters to become Bridgewater’s all-time leader in strikeouts. Shaffer, now 6-2 on the season, now has 233 career strikeouts, breaking the previous mark of 220 held by Gene Crawford (’01).

    Aaron Read was 3-for-5 in the opener with two homers, a double and four RBIs. Drew Elkins was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Andy Chrismer was 3-for-3. Mitchell Edwards, Travis Brake and Michail Madison also hit homers for the Eagles.

    In the second game, the Eagles rallied from a 11-1 deficit to win. Bridgewater scored three runs in the sixth and eight in the seventh to take a 12-11 lead.

    Chrismer was 3-for-4 with a pair of homers, a double and seven RBIs to lead the BC offense. Read was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and Elkins was 3-for-6 with a pair of RBIs. Drew Easter also hit a homer for the Eagles in the second game.

    Bridgewater improved to 21-13-1 overall and 11-5 in the ODAC.
  • Lacrosse loses tough game to Sweet Briar, 11-10 - 04/12/2008

  • Sarah Wade Sweet Briar scored four unanswered goals late in the game to take the lead and then held on in the final seconds to defeat Bridgewater College, 11-10, Saturday in ODAC lacrosse action.

    The Eagles led 4-3 at the half on goals by Sarah Wade, Sarah Burseym Lindsay Snyder and Erin Cartwright.

    Goals by Emily Hammer and Lauren Kondor broke a 7-7 tie and gave the Eagles a 9-7 lead with 8:33 left in the game.

    Sweet Briar then scored the next four goals – two each by Megan Behrle and Meredith Newman – to take an 11-9 lead with 2:15 left to play.

    Wade scored on a free position shot with 1:38 left to pull the Eagles within one, but BC was unable to put in a tying goal in the closing seconds as Sweet Briar held on for the victory.

    Wade led the Eagles with three goals and two assists and Bursey added two goals. Hammer, Kondor, Cartwright, Snyder and Crawford scored one goal apiece for BC.

    Bridgewater closes out its season Sunday afternoon at home when the Eagles host Guilford College at 2 p.m.
  • Softball sweeps Saturday doubleheader - 04/12/2008

  • Ashley GillsBridgewater College swept an ODAC doubleheader Saturday, defeating Randolph-Macon College, 5-4 in 11 innings in the first game and then taking the second game, 6-2.

    The Eagles trailed 2-0 in the opener heading into the bottom of the seventh, but scored two runs to force extra innings. Lauren Childress and Kaitlyn Bowman delivered run-scoring hits in the seventh to tie the score, 2-2.

    After two scoreless innings, the Yellow Jackets scored in the 10th, but Caity Butler drove home a run in the bottom of the 10th to keep the Eagles alive.

    R-MC scored again in the top of the 11th, but again the Eagles rallied. Mallory Sandridge drove in the tying run with a single and BC scored the winning run on a throwing error.

    Ashley Gills went the distance for the Eagles. She allowed eight hits and just two earned runs. She struck out six and walked just one.

    Childress and Bowman had three hits each to lead the BC offense in the first game.

    Randolph-Macon took the lead in the second game when Ashley Crouch belted a two-run homer in the second inning, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.

    The Eagles tied the score in the fourth on a double by Sandridge and then took the lead with four runs in the fifth. Butler doubled home one run and Jordan Burkholder doubled to drive in two more to hightlight the Eagles fifth-inning flurry.

    Becky Schmidt pitched a complete game to pick up the victory. She allowed two earned runs on four hits. She struck out tw0 and did not walk a batter.

    Butler was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the second game and Childress added a pair of hits.

    Also on Saturday, Jennifer Hall broke the BC career record for base hits when she singled in the first game. Hall now has 207 career hits, breaking the record set by former teammate Linday Ware who finished with 205 career hits.

    With the two victories, Bridgewater improved to 21-11 overall and 9-5 in the ODAC.
  • Baseball squanders lead in loss to Greensboro - 04/11/2008

  • Drew ElkinsGreensboro College rallied from an early 5-0 deficit Friday to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles, 12-6, in non-conference baseball action.

    The Eagles started strong with three runs in the first inning. Mike Graves led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on Aaron Read’s double. Drew Elkins drove both runners home with a single to give BC a 2-0 lead. Elkins moved into scoring position on a single by Mitchell Edwards and then scored on a hit by Andy Chrismer, making the score 3-0.

    The Eagles added two more runs in the second to lead 5-0. Bret Mottice tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a passed ball, making the score 4-0. Drew Easter walked, stole second and scored on a hit by Elkins to give the Eagles a five-run lead.

    Greensboro started pecking away at the deficit and a three-run seventh put the visitors on top, 6-5.

    The Eagles tied the score in the bottom of the seventh when Lenox tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rhodes, tying the game at 6-6.

    Greensboro had just one hit in the eighth, but it was a big one as Greensboro broke the game open with five runs. Four walks by the BC staff accounted for the first run of the inning and Tyler O’Neill’s grand slam homer cleared the bases and gave Greensboro an 11-6 lead.

    With the loss Bridgewater drops to 19-13-1.
  • Men's tennis edges Averett, 5-4 - 04/11/2008

  • thorntonThe Bridgewater College tennis team defeated Averett, 5-4, Friday afternoon in non-conference men's tennis play.

    The Eagles took a 2-1 lead after the doubles and that proved to be the difference.

    Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke took an impressive 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles while Andrew Thornton and Brad DeWitt won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3.

    Averett swept the first three singles flights, but the Eagles dominated the lower three flights with wins by DeWitt, Teddy Callow and Colin Saunders clinching the win for Bridgewater.
  • Riders take reserve championship at ODAC Show - 04/11/2008

  • ThorntonHollins University edged Bridgewater College for the championship Friday at the ODAC Horse Show held at the Bridgewater College Equestrian Center. Hollins finished the show with 17 points, one more than the Eagles.

    The Eagles won both Equitation Over Fences classes to hold the lead entering the final class, but BC finished fifth in the Equitation on the Flat to finish as reserve champion overall.

    For the second consecutive year, the Eagles took home ODAC Rider of the Year honors with Patti Ann Thornton earning the top award. Thornton turned in the highest score of the show with an 89 average in the second Equitation Over Fences class.

    Thornton was joined on the All-ODAC team by teammates Lindsay Clark and Gillian Duca Cora.

  • Softball splits at Greensboro - 04/10/2008

  • sblogoBridgewater College split a non-conference doubleheader Thursday, defeating Greensboro College 6-5 in 10 innings in the opener before losing the second game, 7-3.

    Ashley Gills pitched the final 5.2 innings in the opener to pick up the win. She allowed just three hits and one unearned while striking out two and walking none.

    The Eagles fell behind 4-0 but fought back and eventually tied the score in the sixth on a run-scoring grounder by Mallory Sandridge.

    Bridgewater won the game in the 10th when Jordan Burkholder scored on a sacrifice fly by Sandridge. Gills retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to preserve the victory.

    The Eagles managed just three hits in the second game loss. BC still had plenty of opportunities as Greensboro pitchers issued eight walks, but the Eagles stranded nine runners on the basepaths.

    The Eagles are now 19-11 on the season.
  • Bridgewater set to host ODAC Championship show - 04/10/2008

  • Bridgewater College will host the ODAC Championship riding show on Friday April 11 at the Bridgewater College Equestrian Center.

    The championship show will being a 1 p.m. and will feature riders from Lynchburg College, Randolph College, Hollins University, Sweet Briar College, Washington & Lee University and Bridgewater College.

  • Ferrum snaps baseball's winning streak - 04/09/2008

  • BC baseball logoFerrum erased a 3-2 deficit with six runs in the seventh inning Wednesday to take an 8-4 non-conference victory over Bridgewater.

    Jake Wade, Fred Duquette, Travis Bullock and Nolan Shaffer combined to hold Ferrum to just one run in the first five innings, but the Eagles still trailed, 1-0, entering the sixth.

    The Eagles took the lead with three runs in the sixth. With one out Kevin Kirk singled and moved to third on a double by Mike Graves. Aaron Read then doubled to score two runs, giving BC a 2-1 lead. Read moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a bunt single by Mike Lenox, making the score 3-1.

    Ferrum scored once in the sixth to make it 3-2 and then the roof caved in on the Eagles as the Panthers scored six runs on five hits in the seventh to go on top, 8-3.

    Graves, Lenox and Andy Chrismer had two hits each to lead the BC offense.

    The loss snapped the Eagles six-game winning streak. BC is now 19-12-1 overall.
  • Lacrosse team fall to Roanoke - 04/09/2008

  • lacrosse logoRoanoke College took a 10-1 lead in the first half and defeated Bridgewater College, 14-5, in ODAC lacrosse action Wednesday.

    Scoring the goals for the Eagles were Emily Hammer, Leslie Crawford, Sarah Bursey, Lauren Kondor and Jordan Kwong. Recording assists were Erin Cartwright, Bursey and Sarah Wade.

    Goalkeeper Colleen Schwind recorded 12 saves for the Eagles.

    Gina Valles led the Maroons with four goals and Amanda Hutchins added three. Brooke Laufman and Carolyn Miller scored two goals each for Roanoke while teammates Meegan Rourke and Sunni Ray added one goal apiece.

    The Eagles are now 5-8 and 1-5 in the ODAC. Roanoke is 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC.

  • wt logoThe Bridgewater College women's tennis team blanked Swet Briar College, 9-0, in ODAC women's tennis action Wednesday.

    The Eagles swept doubles play, losing just four games in the three matches. At No. 1 Hilary Teeter-Diana Ricker won 8-1. Alissa Michael-Kelly O'Connell took an 8-2 win at No. 2 and Marlena Pipkin-Megan Mathias won 8-1 at No. 3.

    Bridgewater then won all six singles matches in straight sets. Winning for the Eagles were: Teeter 6-2,6-0 at No. 1; Pipkin 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2; Michael 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; Ricker 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4; Mathias 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and O'Connell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

    The Eagles improved to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the ODAC.
  • Baseball rallies for 9-8 victory over EMU - 04/08/2008

  • Chris GrammEastern Mennonite hit Bridgewater College with a five-run first inning Tuesday, but the Eagles rallied for a 9-8 victory in ODAC baseball action.

    Zach Polloni and Chris Handler belted two-run homers in the first inning to spark the Royals to a 5-0 lead, but the Eagles got three of the runs back in the bottom of the inning on a three-run blast by Mike Lenox.

    Bridgewater grabbed the lead with three runs in the second before EMU scored one in the third to tie the score a 6-6.

    After the Eagles regained the lead with an unearned run in the fourth, the Royals went back on top in sixth on a two-run single by Cody Davis, giving EMU an 8-7 lead.

    Bridgewater score twice in the bottom of the eighth to take a one-run lead. Drew Easter led of the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Easter scored on a single to left by Lenox and Lenox ended up in scoring position at second when his hit got away from the left field. With two outs, Andy Chrismer plated Lenox with the go-ahead run, giving BC a 9-8 lead.

    Chris Gramm retired EMU in order in the ninth to finish off the victory.

    Gramm pitched four perfect innings in relief to gain the victory. He struck out four and did not allow a baserunner. Lenox was 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead the Eagles offense.

  • Mizerak named ODAC Female Track Athlete of the Week - 04/07/2008

  • Sammy MizerakSammy Mizerak’s huge day at the Dan Frail Invitationa track meet hosted by Mariette College, earned the BC sophomore the ODAC Female Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week honor.

    Mizerak ran on two winning relay teams, won two individual events and placed third in two more to help lead the Eagles to a second-place team finish at the meet.

    Mizerak ran on both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. Both teams won and both set new meet records in the process. The 400 relay team ran a 48.67, just missing the NCAA provisional standard of 48.65. The 400 relay time was also a new BC record. The 1600 relay won with a time of 4:11.66. Both relay times ranks second in the ODAC this season.

    Mizerak won both the long jump and triple jump. Her winning long jump was 17-feet, ¾ inches and her winning triple jump was 34 feet, 1 ½ inches. Both jumps rank No. 2 in the BC all-time records book

    She also placed third in the javelin and third in the 400 meter hurdles.
  • Peyton earns ODAC weekly track honor - 04/07/2008

  • Stanley PeytonStanley Peyton was honored as the ODAC Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for his record-breaking performance at the Duke Invitational.

    Peyton broke one of the oldest records in the BC record book during the Duke Invitational. Peyton ran the 800 in a time of 1:54.04 to break a record that had stood for 24 years. The old record was set in 1984 by Mark Luiggi with a time of 1:54.36. Peyton’s time is the best in the ODAC this season.

    Peyton also ran the 400 meters at Duke with a personal best time of 49.77 – the first sub 50-second 400 run by a BC athlete since the 2000 season. Peyton’s time ranks third in the ODAC this season.
  • Lenox named ODAC Baseball Player of the Week - 04/07/2008

  • Mike LenoxMike Lenox, hit .421 during the past week to help the Eagles to a 5-0 record and Monday was named the ODAC Baseball Player of the Week.

    Lenox was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in a 3-2 victory over nationally-ranked CNU. He was also 2-for-4 with a run and RBI against Roanoke and closed the week with a 2-for-5 effort against Ferrum. He finished the week with three multi-hit games and a pair of triples. He scored a run in each contest, ending with six over the five games.
  • Softball takes two from E&H - 04/07/2008

  • Caity ButlerBridgewater College swept a conference softball doubleheader from Emory & Henry, winning the first game Monday 7-2, and then taking the second game 9-0 in five innings.

    The Eagles broke up a close game in the opener with four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 lead. Kaitlyn Bowman and Laura Barry singled and both scored on Caity Butler’s double to make the score 3-0. Two more runs scored on a dropped fly ball, giving BC a five-run lead.

    The Eagles scored their final runs in the fifth when Butler doubled home two more runs.

    Becky Schmidt went the distance on the mound to pick up the victory. She allowed two runs on five hits she struck out four and walked one.

    The Eagles used the long ball to defeat the Wasps in the second game.

    Jennifer Hall belted a solo homer and Jordan Burkholder drove home a run with a double to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead after one inning.

    Bridgewater added three more in the second on Mallory Sandridge’s three-run homer and then put the game away with four runs in the fourth.

    Dagen Rutledge drove in the first run in the fourth with a single and Butler finished off her huge day with a three-run homer to complete the scoring.

    Lindsay Lam picked up the victory in the circle with a three-hit shutout.

    Butler paced the offense with a 4-for-7 effort in the two games with seven RBIs.

    With the two victories, the Eagles improved to 18-10 overall and 7-5 in the ODAC.
  • Baseball edges Ferrum, 7-6 - 04/06/2008

  • BC baseball logoBrett Howell drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday to lift the Bridgewater College Eagles to a 7-6 non-conference victory over Ferrum.

    Ferrum used the long ball to take the early lead. Nick Baker belted a two-run shot in the first off BC starter Casey Hartman and the next batter, Jesse Fuller, hit a solo shot, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead.

    The Eagles got on the board in the fourth. With two outs, Mike Lenox singled and Mitchell Edwards drove him home with a double, making the score 3-1.

    The Panthers got that run back in the sixth when Fuller belted another solo homer, giving Ferrum a 4-1 lead.

    The Eagles got into Ferrum’s bullpen in the sixth and the result was a five-run inning to take the lead.

    With two outs and two on, Andy Chrismer tripled, making the score 4-3. Brett Mottice then walked and that was the end of the day for Ferrum starter Brian Mays. Relief pitchers William Campbell and Peter Larson then combined to walk four straight batters and before Tyler Milstead could work out of the inning, the Eagles were on top 6-4.

    Ferrum pulled to within one with a run in the eighth and then tied the score in the ninth when Baker hit a solo homer with two outs, knotting the score at 6-6.

    The Eagles finally got to Milstead in the 10th.

    Edwards led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a groundout by pinch-hitter Walt Gerring. Chrismer was hit by a pitch before Blake Stokely struck out for the second out of the inning. Howell then lined a single to right field, plating Edwards with the winning run.

    Edwards was 3-for-5 to lead the BC offense. Lenox, Mike Graves and Howell added two hits each.

    Hartman worked 7.2 innings and gave up five runs on nine hits. He struck out 10 and walked five. Alex Foltz, who gave up the homer to Baker in the ninth, got the win. He pitched two innings and allowed the one run and three base hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

  • Stanley PeytonBridgewater senior Stanley Peyton broke one of the oldest record in the BC record book Saturday at the Duke Invitational.

    Peyton ran the 800 meters in a time of 1:54.04, erasing a record that had been on the books since 1984. He finished 12th overall in a field of 40 runners.

    Mark Luiggi held the record with a time of 1:54.36.
  • Men first, women second at Marietta meet - 04/05/2008

  • The Bridgewater College men’s track team scored 130 points Saturday to win the title at the Don Frail Invitational hosted by Marietta College while the women placed second, just two points out of first place.

    The BC men set one new meet record when they won the 4x100 relay with a time of 42.17 seconds. The team featured Tyler Beiler, Melvin Queen, Tony Konate and Brandon Copeland.

    The Eagles won three individual events with Leigh Bradley winning the triple jump and Nathan Turner placing first in both the shot put and hammer.

    Queen placed second in both sprints and JT Painter placed second in the 110 hurdles.

    The Eagles piled up a slew of third-place efforts that helped them secure the team title.

    Placing third were Jeff McCauley in the 1500 and 5000 meters, Keenan Fenwick in the 110 hurdles and long jump, Konate in the 100, Bradley in the high jump and Turner in the discus.

    The women’s track team scored 130 points, finishing just behind Marietta.

    It was a record-setting day for the BC women as they set four meet records and three new BC records.

    Both BC relay teams won and both set new meet records. The runners in both the 4x100 and 4x400 were Courtney Hartman, Sammy Miaerak, Samantha Phillips and Jill Wattai. The 4x400 team ran a time of 4:11.66. The 4x100 team ran a BC record time of 48.67, just missing the NCAA provisional time of 48.65.

    Samantha Phillips placed first in the 400 meters with a meet record time of 1:00.75.

    Freshman Christina Rhodes set the fourth meet record with a height of 11 feet, ½ inch. The mark also broke the Eagles record set by Rhodes earlier this season.

    The final BC record was set by Hartman as she won the javelin with a throw of 111 feet, 6 inches.

    Mizerak had a huge day for the Eagles. In addition to running on both winning relays, she won both the long jump and triple jumps and placed third in the javelin and 400 meter hurdles. Mizerak won the long jump with a mark of 17 feet, ¾ inches and the triple jump with a mark of 34 feet 1 ½ inches. Both marks rank No. 2 on the BC all-time lists.

    Wattai added two solid efforts in the sprints, placing second in both the 100 and 200.[Results]

  • Lauren KondorBridgewater took a 5-4 halftime lead and held on for a 9-8 victory over Ferrum College in non-conference lacrosse action Satruday.

    Corinne Musanti opened the second half with two goals to give the Panthers the lead, but the Eagles responded with three straight goals to regain the lead for good.

    Sarah Wade scored off an assist from Sarah Bursey to tie the score and Lauren Kondor scored an unassisted goal to put the Eagles up 7-6. Emily Hammer then score off an assist from Erin Cartwright to make the score 8-6.

    Olivia Mendoza pulled the Panthers to within one but Lindsay Snyder answered to give BC a 9-7 margin with 6:46 left.

    Cara Jenkins scored for Ferrum at the 4:36 mark to make it a one-goal game at 9-8, but the Eagles held the Panthers scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the 9-9 victory.

    Wade, Snyder and Bursey scored two goals each to lead the BC attack. Hammer, Kondor and Crystal Reynolds each added one goal.

    BC goalkeeper Colleen Schwind finished the game with 10 saves.

    Bridgewater is now 5-7 overall. Ferrum falls to 3-7.
  • Baseball takes two from Roanoke - 04/05/2008

  • Mike Graves Bridgewater College swept its doubleheader with Roanoke College on Saturday, winning the first game 8-5 and then rallying for an 8-7 victory in Game 2.

    In the opener, Bridgewater took advantage of the Maroons’ defense to score four unearned runs to take a 4-1 lead.

    The Eagles offense got untracked in the fifth with four runs on five hits to increase its lead to 8-2.

    Aaron Read led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Mike Lenox to make the score 5-2. Mitchell Edwards singled to put runners at the corners and both scored on a Chad Rhodes double to make it 7-2. Rhodes trotted home on a triple by Andy Chrismer, giving BC an 8-2 lead.

    The Maroon battled back with two runs in the sixth to pull within 8-4 and threatened in the seventh before starter Nolan Shaffer closed the door to finish off the complete-game, 8-5 victory.

    Shaffer improved to 5-2 on the season. He allowed seven hits and three of the five runs were earned. Rhodes and Chrismer each drove in two runs to lead the offense for the Eagles.

    In the second game, Roanoke chased BC starter Fred Duquette with five runs in the first three innings. Graham Thacker singled home two runs in the second and Patrick Collins belted a two-run homer in the third to lead the Maroons offense.

    The Eagles chipped away at the lead and eventually took the lead with three runs in the eighth. Drew Elkins led off with a single and Lenox tripled, pulling the Eagles to within 6-5. The Maroons issued an intentional walk to Rhodes, bringing pinch-hitter Drew Easter to the plate. Easter put down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Lenox with the tying run. Chrismer then singled to score Rhodes with the go-ahead run, making the score 7-6.

    The Maroons battled back to tie the score in the top of the ninth. Matt Vess led off the inning by drawing a walk and took second on a sacrifice bunt. Collins then singled to left and Lenox threw out Vess at the plate as he tried to score from second, preserving the one-run lead.

    John Terlesky then singled to right and pinch-runner Jeff Kiseil scored the tying run on another bang-bang play at the play as the throw from Blake Stokely hopped past Chrismer.

    The Eagles pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the inning. Mike Graves walked and moved to second on a sacrifice by bunt by Aaron Read. Both Graves and Read advanced on the play on a throwing error. Elkins was walked intentionally to load the bases and , with one out, Graves scored on a grounder by Mitchell Edwards, giving BC the sweep.

    Graves was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs to pace the BC offense in Game 2.

  • Rittenhouse sets new BC mark in 5000 - 04/04/2008

  • RittenhouseNathan Rittenhouse broke his own record Friday in the 5000 meters at the Duke Invitational.

    Rittenhouse finished with a time of 15:05.54 seconds to break the record he set last spring. Rittenhouse ran 15:08.81 in 2007.

    Stanley Peyton ran his personal best in the 400 with a time of 49.77 seconds. Peyton's time was the first sub-50 second 400 by an Eagles since 200 when Andre Jones ran a 49.53.

    Jacob Griffin also competed Friday, running a time of 4:20.67 in the 1,500 meters.

  • Thursday's home baseball game against N.C. Wesleyan has been postponed due to threatening weather in the area.

  • Baseball defeats EMU, 10-2 - 04/02/2008

  • Fred DuquetteBridgewater College pounded out 16 hits Wednesday and four pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters as the Eagles defeated Eastern Mennonite, 10-2, in ODAC baseball action.

    Fred Duquette picked up the victory, allowing two runs on seven hits in five innings. Alex Foltz struck out all three batters he faced in the sixth and Drew Elkins allowed just two hits in two innings. Mike Lenox finished the game off with a hitless ninth.

    The Eagles took a quick 2-0 lead in their first at bat. Brad Buracker led off with a single and moved to third on a single by Aaron Read. Buracker scored on a ground out by Elkins and Read later scored on a sacrifice fly by Lenox, making the score 2-0.

    The Eagles blew the game open with a six-run uprising in the fourth inning.

    Andy Chrismer led off the inning with a single, stole second and took third on a throwing error by the catcher. After Chad Rhodes walked, Chrismer scored on a single by Mike Graves, making the score 3-1.

    Rhodes then scored on a single by Buracker to make it 4-1. Graves and Buracker then pulled off a double steal and Graves scored on a sacrifice fly by Read. Buracker then scored on a grounder by Elkins to put the Eagles on top 6-1. Lenox then drove home a run with a triple and scored on an EMU error for an 8-1 BC lead.

    Buracker, Graves and Drew Easter each finished the game with three base hits. Elkins drove in three runs and Lenox finished with two RBIs.

    Bridgewater improved to 15-11-1 overall and 6-5 in the ODAC.
  • Softball loses two at Lynchburg - 04/02/2008

  • sblogoODAC leader Lynchburg pounded the Bridgewater College Eagles in a doubleheader Wednesday, winning the first game 8-1 and the second game 8-0.

    The Eagles has a total of just 13 hits in the two games and just one hit for extra bases.

    Jennifer Hall and Laura Barry each had two hits in the opener for BC.

    The Hornets ripped 21 hits off the BC staff, including two doubles and three homers. The BC hurlers also walked 10 batters in the two games.

    The Eagles are now 16-10, 5-5 in the ODAC.
  • Women's tennis rolls past Maroons - 04/02/2008

  • Hillary TeeterBridgewater College rolled past Roanoke, 8-1, Wednesday in ODAC women's tennis action.

    BC's lone loss came at No. 1 singles where Hilary Teeter lost a close three-set match.

    The rest of the Eagles - Marlena Pipkin, Alissa Michael, Jessica Hill, Diana Ricker and Megan Mathias - won in straight sets and lost a total of just six games.

    The Eagles swept the doubles, losing just two games to the Maroons.

    The Eagles are now 7-3 overall.

  • lacrosse logoBridgewater College picked up its first conference win of the season by defeating Hollins, 14-1, Wednesday at Jopson Field.

    Erin Cartwright led the Eagles with three goals and two assists. Jordan Kwong, Leslie Crawford, Sarah Bursey, Sarah Wade and Lindsay Snyder each scored two goals. Emily Hammer scored one goal for the Eagles.

    Wade added four assists while Crawford and Snyder had two assists apiece. Kwong, Hammer and Bursey each added one assist.

    Colleen Schwind and Jennifer Midgette combined for 10 saves and allowed just the one goal.

    The Eagles are now 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the ODAC.
  • Lacrosse falls to Randolph-Macon - 04/01/2008

  • Sarah Wade Randolph-Macon took a 10-3 halftime lead and went on to defeat Bridgewater College, 18-3, Tuesday in ODAC lacrosse action.

    Lindsay Snyder scored two goals and Leslie Crawford added one for the Eagles. Crawford and Sarah Wade had one assist each.

    Lacy Phelps led the Yellow Jackets attack with four goals and one assistn and Emily Kent added three goals and two assists.

    Bridgewater is now 3-7 overall and 0-4 in the ODAC. Randolph-Macon improves to 4-6, 4-1 in the conference.
  • Baseball edges CNU, 3-2 - 04/01/2008

  • Chad RhodesBridgewater College scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings Tuesday to defeat Christopher Newport, 3-2, in non-conference baseball action.

    The Eagles jumped on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first on a Mike Lenox run-scoring single, but CNU evened the score when Trae Bailey belted a solo homer in the third.

    That's the way the scored stayed until the seventh as BC lefty Casey Hartman and CNU southpaw Steven Millerleile controlled the middle innings.

    The Captains took the lead in the seventh when Hartman walked in a run, but he left the bases full when he retired Eric Cole on a grounder to second.

    BC to the run back in the bottom of the inning when Blake Stokely led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Stokely took third on a grounder and scored on a wild pitch.

    Hartman was lifted when he walked the leadoff batter in the eighth, but Chris Gramm stranded the potential go-ahead run at second to keep the score tied.

    Lenox reached on an infield single to open the eighth and moved to second on a sacrfice bunt. With two out, Chad Rhodes lined a double to right center, scoring Lenox with the go-ahead run.

    Hartman pitched seven innings and allowed just four hits and two runs. He struck out three and walked seven, one intentionally.

    Gramm pitched two hitless innings to earn the victory for the Eagles.

    The Eaglea are now 14-11-1 overall while CNU drops to 19-6. [Boxscore]
  • Men's tennis loses close match to Roanoke - 04/01/2008

  • remschDoubles proved to be the difference Tuesday as Bridgewater College lost a close 5-4 match to Roanoke College in ODAC men's tennis action.

    Brian Remsch and Ryan Radke took a 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles, but Roanoke won at No. 2 and No. 3 to take a 2-1 lead.

    The teams split the singles as Roanoke escaped with the narrow victory.

    Remsch won at No. 1 singles and Teddy Callow and and Colin Saunders won at No. 5 and No. 6.

    Ryan Radke at No. 2 and Chris Radke at No. 3 each lost in close three-set matches.

  • Elkins named ODAC Baseball Player of the Week - 03/31/2008

  • Drew ElkinsBridgewater College sophomore Drew Elkins was named the ODAC Baseball Player of the Week by the conference office.

    Elkins had a huge week for the Eagles. In five games, he was 13-for-18 (.722 average) with six doubles and a home run. Against Catholic, Elkins was 4-for-4 with three doubles, four runs scored and one RBI. Against W&L, he was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Against Mary Washington, he was 4-for-5 with four RBIs, a run scored, two doubles and a grand slam homer. He finished his week 2-for-4 in a doubleheader against R-MC and he reached base in five of his seven plate appearances. For the week he had and on-base percentage of .727 and a slugging percentage of 1.222.
  • Turner earns ODAC weekly track honor - 03/31/2008

  • Nathan Turner Bridgewater College junior Nathan Turner was named ODAC Male Outdoor Track Athlete of the week Monday by the conference office.

    Turner won two events and placed third in another at the Liberty Invitational. Turner won the shot at 53 feet, 7 inches, won the discus with a throw of 148 feet, 5 inches and placed third in the hammer with a distance of 169 feet, 4 inches. A pair of Division I throwers placed ahead of Turner in the hammer. His throws in both the shot and hammer were new Bridgewater College records and both marks met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.

  • BC baseball logoThe Bridgewater College baseball team suffered a pair of tough losses Saturday to Randolph-Macon College in ODAC action. The Yellow Jackets won the opener 4-3 and then rallied for six runs in the top of the ninth to take a 10-5 victory in the second game.

    In the opener, the Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when Aaron Read’s wind-blown popup fell in for a two-run double.

    Randolph-Macon responded in the top of the fifth when Michael Wallace belted a two-run homer, making the score 4-3.

    Yellow Jackets starter Charlie Hartt made the lead stand by blanking the Eagles over the final two innings to finish off his complete game effort.

    The Yellow Jackets led 4-2 in the second game when Adam Carpenter led off the sixth inning with a homer, but the Eagles rallied to take the lead with one run in the seventh and two in the eighth.

    In the seventh, Chad Rhodes singled with two outs and scored on Read’s double to pull the Eagles within one, 4-3.

    The Eagles took the lead in the eighth with another two-out rally. Mike Lenox and Drew Elkins put together back-to-back doubles to tie the score and Mitchell Edwards followed with a run-scoring triple, giving BC a 5-4 lead.

  • Softball takes two from Randolph College - 03/29/2008

  • Caity ButlerBridgewater College swept Randolph College in ODAC softball action Saturday, winning the first game 9-1 and the second game 11-2.

    Bridgewater broke the first game open with five runs in the third inning. Caity Butler’s three-run homer highlighted the inning. Kaitlyn Bowman also drove home a run in the third with a triple.

    In the second game, Bridgewater scored nine runs in the second inning to take control. Lauren Childress drove home two runs with a double and Mallory Sandridge belted a two-run homer.

    Nikki Smith drove in both Randolph runs with a two-run homer in the fourth inning.

    Butler finished the doubleheader with five RBIs for the Eagles.

    Bridgwater improves to 16-8 overall and 5-3 in the ODAC. Randolph is now 3-9 overall and 0-8 in the conference.
  • Men's tennis blanks Shenandoah - 03/29/2008

  • mt logoThe Bridgewater College men's tennis team got back on the winning track Saturday with a 9-0 non-conference victory over Shenandoah.

    The Eagles lost just three games while sweeping the doubles and then won all six singles flights in straight sets.

    Bridgewater is now 7-4 on the season.

  • Lindsay SnyderMarymount took a 7-4 lead at halftime and held off Bridgewater College in the second half to defeat the Eagles, 12-8, Saturday in non-conference lacrosse action.

    Lindsay Snyder led the Eagles' attack with three goals. Sarah Wade, Lauren Kondor, Jordan Kwong, Leslie Crawford and Sarah Bursey each added one goal for Bridgewater.
