Convocation Requirements

Attendance

Students are required to attend seven convocations per semester. Any seven may be chosen from the programs offered in the semester (there are no specific requirements for certain kinds of convocations). Satisfactory completion of convocation attendance is recorded on the student's transcript. Students can access their convocation attendance records on WebAdvisor. Questions regarding convocation attendance should be directed to the convocation secretary, Kelly Coverstone at 540-828-5399 or kcoverst@bridgewater.edu.

Additional Guidelines

Audience members at all convocations will respect these rules, in addition to the guidelines about attendance and tardiness.

  • Be seated prior to the start of the program and remain seated until an intermission or the end of the program. Never leave in the middle of presentations or performances as it disturbs the presenters/performers and the other audience members. If you must leave please do so during some sort of break, transition or applause.
  • Wait until you are dismissed to leave and utilize card scanners. Be patient and wait until the introductory host (the Director of Convocations or faculty host) has dismissed you. The Information Technology Center employees will not permit people to record convocation credits until they have heard such a dismissal.
  • Please pay attention. It is only respectful to pay attention to someone who is speaking publicly. If you are caught doing homework or are otherwise disrespectful during a program you may be forced to forfeit credit for the convocation in question.
  • Remain quiet during the program. Talking, whispering, and making noise with book bags, papers, candy wrappers, et cetera is highly distracting and annoying.
  • Disable sounds on electronic devices. Have all audible devices turned off or at least set on a silent function. Anyone caught speaking on a cell phone unnecessarily during a presentation or performance will be removed and will not receive convocation credit for that specific program.
  • Please do not take photographs or use any recording device during a performance. It is not only distracting to take photos and videos but it could also be illegal for some performances!

If everyone abides by these rules, convocations should be enjoyable for students, faculty, and the community. We are sorry for any inconveniences that these rules may cause, but they will be enforced in order to promote respect for our guest speakers.
