General Housing Questions | CommuterQuestions | Parking | Communication-Technology

HOUSING/RESIDENCE HALLS Question 1: "I have a conflict involving my roommate. What do I do?"
Answer: First, discuss your problem with your RD or RA. If you have already done that and feel the problem is not being solved, contact Sara Norman, Director of Residence Life, at Ext. 3794 (or email her at snorman@bridgewater.edu).

Question 2: "If I want to make a room change, whom do I talk to?"
Answer: All room changes originate with the RD or RA. He/she will arrange the room change, then notify the Director of Residence Life of the change.

Question 3: "What do I do if I have a maintenance problem?"
Answer: Contact the RD or RA, or write your complaint on the maintenance sheet outside their door. The appropriate maintenance personnel will be contacted on your behalf.

Question 4: "What if I live in an Honors House and there is no RD?"
Answer: Call the Office of Student Affairs. Be prepared to give the following information - (a) Room/House Number, (b) Specifics of the problem (ie, which bathroom - what kind of leak - where is it?). Students may also email the Director of Residence Life directly (snorman@bridgewater.edu)

Question 5: "I lost my room key!"
Answer: Contact your RD, who will arrange for a new key to be issued for you. A $25 re-keying fee will be billed to your account.

Question 6: "But I never had a key in the first place."
Answer: Check with your RD. He/she should have a copy for you. If you are in an Honors House, check with the Office of Student Affairs, who should have a key reserved for you.

Question 7: "The washer/dryer isn't working. Who takes care of this?"
Answer: Notify your RD or RA, or call the Office of Student Affairs directly. Be ready to give the number of the unit, where it's located, and a detailed description of the problem.

Question 8: "What are the cleaning procedures?"
Answer: You are responsible for cleaning your own room and suite bathroom, and providing your own cleaning supplies. The Housekeeping Staff cleans Hall bathrooms and public areas. You are also responsible for taking personal trash outside to the designated dumpster. Fines are levied for recycle bins and/or trash cans left in the hallways.

Question 9: "Can my boyfriend/girlfriend visit me in my room?"
Answer: Yes, during visiting hours. People of the opposite sex are permitted in the residence hall rooms as follows: Sunday-Thursday, 10 am - 12 midnight; Friday and Saturday, 10am - 2am. One designated public lounge is open 24 hours a day for the purpose of studying and/or socializing.

Question 10: "May I bring an air conditioner or space heater?"
Answer: Only students with a diagnosed medical condition requiring the use of an air conditioner may have one installed in their window. A doctor's certification is required prior to a student's arrival on campus; the student provides his/her own air conditioner, which the College will have installed. [Students are asked not to install A/C's themselves.] Fans are also permitted. Space heaters, due to fire codes, are not permitted.

Question 11: "What activities can I get involved with in my residence hall?"
Answer: Each Hall has a Hall Council, made up of elected members from each floor, which is responsible for planning dorm activities and problem-solve dorm issues that may arise. These members will be determined at the beginning of each year at section meetings. Planned activities include social events, educational events, and service projects. We would encourage you to get involved with as many activities as possible.

Question 12: "May I smoke in the residence halls?"
Answer: There is no smoking in any of the school buildings, residential or otherwise. Smokers may use the outside areas designated for smoking.

Question 13: "What kind of security is there on campus?"
Answer: Each residence hall is locked at 12 midnight each night. Students can access the residence halls by using their ID cards at the designated key card door. The campus is patrolled 7 days a week and 24 hours a day by campus safety officers. Their responsibility is the security of the campus and the protection of the campus community and Bridgewater College assets. The Chief of the Department is a sworn police officer and has full law enforcement authority on campus and can investigate crime, make arrests and enforce all laws.

Question 14: "May I bring a loft to campus?"
Answer: Yes. Students are required to store the College-supplied dorm-room bed in the residence hall room or in the building storage room, if space permits. Students are also responsible for off-campus storage of lofts over the summer. Most lofts purchased from reputable furniture companies will meet the College's standards. If your family is thinking about building a loft from scratch, please read the loft guidelines.

PARKING

Question 1: "I'm a resident student. Do I still need permission to park on campus?"
Answer: Yes, both residents and commuters need permission to park on campus, in the form of a decal. You may pick one up in the Facilities Office, located directly behind Flory Hall. You'll recognize it by its smoke stack. The Facilities Office is on the second floor. Take the number off your license plate when you go.

Answer: Temporary parking passes are issued by the Campus Police Office, which is located in the same building as the Facilities Office, only on the first floor.

Question 3: "Where am I allowed to park?"
Answer: Resident and commuter parking areas are clearly marked on campus. Look for the 'P' on the Campus Map.

Question 4: "I got a parking ticket. Where do I go to pay?"
Answer: Take your ticket to the Business Office in Flory Hall.

Question 5: "I don't think I deserve this parking ticket. Who do I talk to about it?"
Answer: Campus Police Office (see Question 2).

COMMUNICATION/TECHNOLOGY

Question 1: "I've lost my post office box number/combination."
Answer: The Postmistress will have that information in the BC Post Office (KCC basement).

Question 2: "My phone isn't connected; my voicemail doesn't work; my network connection is faulty; I can't get any cable. Who do I talk to?"
Answer: The good folks in the IT Center will be able to help you with these kinds of problems.

Question 3: "What kind of computer access is in my room?"
Answer: There's one jack per room. If you and your roommate both have a computer, the IT Center will accommodate both. For network access, you'll have to purchase a network card, which costs around $100 plus tax; the IT Center does not install this for you. You can purchase a PC from the IT Center which has the network card already installed. You may call them at 540-828-5436, or visit their web page: http://www.bridgewater.edu/index.php?id=107
