What is Service-Learning?

Imagine learning in such a way that you apply your knowledge through hands-on experiences while also meeting the needs of the local community. That, in a nutshell, is the definition of service-learning. More than volunteerism or community service, service-learning gives strong emphasis to meeting community needs and reflecting critically on that service experience so as to learn something of value from it. Service-Learning emphasizes "the accomplishment of tasks which meet human needs in combination with conscious educational growth." (Southern Regional Educational Board)

Why Service-Learning?

We learn better when we're personally involved in the subject matter. Service-learning is hands-on, experiential education! In addition to serving others, you benefit from service-learning. Service-Learning is a reciprocal venture. While service to the community is paramount, service-learning experiences - especially those related to an individual's educational and professional goals - can enhance employment resumes and graduate school applications by demonstrating practical experience in the field, leadership development, and ethical concern for the community.
