Blog Help

I am the Activity Director at White Birch Communities. I currently have a resident who would like a student volunteer to help him learn how to set up a blog. He is writing a book, and would need someone who is available from approximately 9:30 am. to 11 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Maybe once or twice a week, to help him get this started. If you have someone who would be interested you can contact me and I will introduce you to him, his name is Michael. Any help at all would be very much appreciated.

Volunteer Opportunities

I have two volunteer opportunities available for this semester. John Wayland Elementary School (which is right up the road from Bridgewater), is looking for volunteers for two of their programs.

The first program is the “Jaguar Club”. This is a tutoring and homework club targeted towards 4th and 5th graders. It happens on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-4:00. This is a great opportunity (especially for education majors) to get some community service hours under your belt as well as have positive interactions with young children. You are welcome to come to as many of these meetings as you want.

The other opportunity, also offered by John Wayland Elementary School, is on November 8th. That day, JWES is holding its parent-teacher conferences and needs volunteers to provide child care. They need volunteers form 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM with several shifts being available.

If either of these opportunities interests you, please contact Stephanie Painter at sap004@eagles.bridgewater.edu for more information.

Are you an aspiring educator?
Do you like working with children?
Do you want something fulfilling?

Well, it sounds like Brother to Brother and Sister to Sister are for you!

Email mrc002@eagles.bridgewater.edu if you are interested in learning more, getting involved, and leaving a transformative impact on yourself and the community!

Harrisonburg City Public Schools After-School Club

High quality after-school programs provide numerous social, family, and community benefits. In addition to helping parents balance work and life responsibilities, these programs offer prime opportunities to enhance learning-particularly for struggling students.

The Harrisonburg City Public Schools will offer after-school programs at 5 of its schools. The programs will be held at the following schools: Keister, Waterman, Spotswood and Stone Spring Elementary Schools. The fall session of after-school programs will run October 3 – December 3, 2011.

Staffing
Each after-school program will be staffed by an After-School Coordinator as well as certified and non-certified teaching staff. The programs will also be supported by local college students pursuing an education career or who have interest in community service. A ratio of 15 students to 1 certified staff member is desired. Depending upon the activity, the ratio may be higher. College students will be
paired with certified staff members.

Schedule
Each school's program will run for approximately 2 hours per day. Program instructors will be required to stay for 2.0 hours. The programs will begin as soon as school has been dismissed. Elementary School Dismissal Time: 3:25pm (Program runs until 5:30pm) The Elementary School programs will focus upon grades K-4.

Stone Spring Elementary School annual Fun Day
Saturday, October 29, from 11am until 3pm
Stone Spring Elementary School in Harrisonburg (on Peach Grove Ave off of Port Republic Road)

Details:  The PTA annually hosts a fun day for families within our school community.  It's intended to be a fun-filled time where students/parents can play games, participate in both fun and education activities, and meet other families.  The PTA uses this event as a portion of our fundraising for the year to support additional school activities such as school assemblies, cultural nights, etc.  To host a successful fun day, we need community support to help staff games/activities.   In past years, many volunteers typically came from area colleges/universities and participated for 2-hour or 4-hour time-blocks.

It’s time again for our 5k Run/Walk.

The event will be on October 29, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., with registration at 9:00 a.m.  We are looking for student volunteers to guide our runners through our course and perhaps help clean up.  Those volunteering for the event will need to be at the front of the Houff Community Center on Bridgewater Retirement Community’s campus at 8:45 a.m.  Proceeds for our 5k will go to the Resident Care Endowment Fund, which helps pay for residents who can no longer cover the total cost of their care.  We need lots of volunteers!  Anyone interested can contact me, Sara Alago, at 828-2550 or respond with e-mail.
