How do I place an item on reserve?

Instructors interested in placing items on reserve for their classes may use the online form, or a print form available at the circulation desk. Faculty members may contact Helen Semones at 540-515-3782 or at hsemones@bridgewater.edu for assistance.

Course Reserves Policy

  • The Library Director will distribute copies of the reserve materials form in a campus-wide e-mail one week before the start of each semester.
  • Forms will be made available at the circulation desk and on the Library's home page.
  • Faculty members placing items on reserve should fill out the form and submit it electronically to the Circulation Supervisor's attention by e-mail, inter-office mail, the library's website, or manually at the circulation desk.
  • All reserve items must remain in compliance with US Code 17 of U.S. Copyright Law. In particular, copies for a specific course cannot be placed on reserve for consecutive academic semesters for the same instructor without documented copyright permission.
  • Faculty members who leave personal copies of materials on reserve are encouraged to use the form as a means of recommending the title for purchase. The process of identifying reserve materials for coursework contributes to collection development initiatives.
  • Faculty members should provide unstapled photocopies of articles.
  • The Circulation Supervisor will process reserve items as soon as possible, in a time frame not to exceed two business days from the date of receipt.
  • Processing will include:
  • Selecting records from the ALEX catalog and changing location to "Reserves"
  • Creating a bibliographic record for the ALEX catalog for those items not owned by the library
  • Adding course number and faculty name to the catalog record
  • Adding course number and faculty name to the reserve item
  • Labeling and bar coding the item for circulation
  • Organizing reserve materials behind the circulation desk in call number order with clear labels affixed to the shelves indicating the course number and faculty name
  • The reserve materials will be available for viewing via the ALEX catalog using the course reserves search screen. Patrons can search by course number, faculty name or title to identify the items on reserves. Personal copies will be suppressed from the public OPAC view. But these records will always be viewable from the "Reserves Search" screens.
