The mission of the Alexander Mack Memorial Library is to acquire and make available to the academic community the broad range of information needed for rich educational experiences in a liberal arts institution. It serves as a vital instructional arm in encouraging students to explore the meaning of life and the cultural heritage of mankind in the context of Christian community. Emphasis is placed upon providing learning materials that intensify the learner's quest. Since learning occurs best where there is freedom of exposure and analysis, a variety of perspectives are represented in the library collection. The library strives to achieve a balanced program of services and a setting in which learning is encouraged. Although the library's primary intention is to provide a learning center for the campus community, the resources are also open to alumni and members of the local community.
The Library strives to:
- Select and acquire materials that are needed in the educational program.
- Involve faculty in selection and withdrawal of materials.
- Maintain a well-organized collection.
- Keep library adequately staffed with professional people as many hours as possible.
- Cooperate with other libraries through interlibrary loans and networking arrangements.
- Furnish assistance to library users in locating information and using the facility.
- Provide friendly and courteous service at all times.
Alexander Mack:
The library at Bridgewater College was named for Alexander Mack, who was the founder of the Church of the Brethren. His personal Bible, printed in Germany in 1723 and containing his handwritten notes, may be viewed in the Brethren Room on the second floor. It has been in the possession of Bridgewater College for almost 100 years.
