Special Collections


Use. Bridgewater College and Brethren archives and special collections are open to all upon request. Researchers must register via a form available at the library and may use materials only in the library. Pencils are to be used exclusively.

Hours. Bridgewater College and Brethren archives and special collections are available for patron use Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. While the library is normally open evenings and on weekends during the spring and fall semesters, staffing is usually not sufficient to provide service to researchers wishing to utilize archives and special collections. It is advisable that researchers coming from a distance make an appointment in advance. Mail, Fax, e-mail and telephone requests will be handled as fully as time permits.

Photocopies. Photocopying is permitted if physical condition and copyright allow. Copy machines are located on each floor of the library. Photocopies are $.10 per page. Mail, Fax, e-mail and telephone requests for copies will be processed as fully as time permits, subject to stated cost and limitation by volume.

Publishing. Permission to publish excerpts from archives and special collections materials must be obtained in advance from the library and, if applicable, from the depositor of said materials. Researchers assume all responsibility for abiding by U.S. copyright law.

Parking. Visitors are encouraged to park in the designated area behind the Alexander Mack Memorial Library. There is no charge for parking, and vehicle registration is not required.

Bridgewater College Collection. Materials by and about Bridgewater College are kept in the J. I. Baugher Special Collections Room on the ground floor. Included in this collection are college Honors Projects. Please see a staff member for access to this collection.

Church of the Brethren Collection. First copies of all Church of the Brethren materials are kept in the Brethren Room on the second floor. Duplicate copies which circulate are located on the far right end of the stacks on the second floor. Anyone needing materials located only in the Brethren Room must see a staff member.

Church of the Brethren Hymnal Collection. The Donald R. Hinks collection of hymn books and hymnals dates from 1720 to the present. It is the most complete collection of its type in existence. Please see the Library Director or Archivist for access to this collection.

Genealogy and Virginia. This collection, located in the Special Collections Room on the ground floor, is available for use Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Please see a staff member for access to the collection.

Sheet Music Collection. A large collection of ninteenth and twentieth century vocal and piano sheet music.

Textbook Collection.The Donald R. Hinks textbook collection includes over 4,000 textbooks from the late 18th century through 1941. It is located in the J. I. Baugher Special Collections Room on the ground floor. Please see a staff member for access to this collection.
