Standards for English 110:
Effective Writing
The English Department, Bridgewater College
![]()
The following policies have been approved by the English Department of Bridgewater College. They represent minimum performance standards for passing the first-year writing course. They will be applied by instructors in all sections of English 110: Effective Writing taught at Bridgewater College.
Students may be permitted up to 2
weeks' absence from class without penalty, but
the penalty for absences in excess of 2 weeks is severe. Students who miss more than 6
classes in a MWF time period or more than 4 classes in a TR time period will
receive an F for the course. Absences
for any reason are included in this policy; instructors will not consider certain absences “excused.”
Any extended medical leave
will need to be appropriately documented through the Office of Academic Affairs.
(Individual instructors may add further details to their own class
attendance policies.)
Students should complete all course assignments. Students who do not complete all of the major essay assignments will receive an F for the course.
Revision is required in this course. Students who do not thoroughly and substantially revise each major essay assignment at least once will receive an F for the course. Students must complete revisions as required by the instructor by specified deadlines. Students who wish to meet more than the most minimal standards for passing ENG 110 should expect to revise each major essay assignment more than once.
Writing Center Requirements
Satisfactory attendance in the Writing Center beginning in the third week of each semester is required, unless the student is exempt. Attendance requirements and/or exemption will be determined on the basis of an in-class essay to be written within the first 2 weeks of the semester, in accordance with each instructor's schedule.
