Description:
For this essay you will simply be writing an expository
essay on a [topic]-related science or technology topic.
The goal of any expository essay is to educate or inform the reader, and
for this essay you will be focusing specifically on the scientific or
technological issues involved. The
following list provides several topics from which you may choose.
You are not limited to the topics listed below [deleted], but if you
choose a topic not listed here, you must clear it with me first.
You will conduct research on the topic that you choose, and you will
develop an essay that thoroughly explains that topic.
Requirements:
1. You will incorporate information from 3-5 sources, at least half of which must be print material.
2. Your essay will be between 3 and 5 pages long.
3. You will use the CBE documentation style for this essay. You can find a basic outline for the CBE author-year system at the following address: <http://www.wisc.edu/writing/Handbook/DocCBE_NameYear_Intext.html>. Complete information is available in the CBE style manual in our library (Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers. Reference Section, 808.02 S416, 1997).
4. You will bring a complete draft (hard-copy) of the essay to class on [date]. We will have a Peer Response activity in class that day.
5. You will submit a revised draft of the essay to me on [date].
6. You will revise the essay as necessary throughout the remainder of the term before including it in the final portfolio
