About Bridgewater College Writing Center Consultants

By Ryan Bachman

Who are WC Consultants?

The Bridgewater College Writing Center Consultants are a group of students chosen to help their peers in improving their writing skills.  Coming from a variety of majors, they are selected on the basis of academic strength and enjoy working with their peers.  Each consultant spends roughly 4-8 hours a week in one-on-one consultation with students on a multitude of issues.  Issues often include, but are not limited to: thesis development, analysis of ideas, citation, structure, grammar, and familiarization with commonly used programs such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.  Consultants are NOT proofreaders/designated editors as per the Bridgewater Honor Code; however, they do their best to make certain students solve the most significant troubles in their writing.  Periodically, consultants make presentations to classes and participate in workshops.

Here Every Step of the Way!

Writing Center consultants are willing to take the extra time and measures to help students both understand and make improvements in their writing.  They are available every step of the way in the writing process from the moment students have a topic in mind and onward to the completion of their assignment.  Consultations are highly individualized and cover any inquiry students might have whether it’s the nature of the assignment or how to construct a better thesis/introduction/or conclusion.  Consultants try to ensure that the student has both “got the right idea” and is able to replicate it.  Students who aren’t native English speakers are encouraged to work with the Writing Center consultants whose help and advice might make an easier transition into the curriculum they are enrolled.

Bringing the WC to You!

The services that Bridgewater’s Writing Center offers have changed dramatically since its building in 1996.  Students who require assistance may electronically contact consultants via email and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM).  Emails are generally responded to within 24-48 hours along with a proposed appointment to discuss issues in the assignment with a consultant.  In conjunction with the Writing Center Director, Dr. Alice Trupe, the consultants also publish a newsletter several times a year containing valuable tips students might use in their writing.
