BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE WRITING CENTER

Bridgewater College ENG 101 Writing Workshops

Placement Procedures

Our experience as teachers of writing has shown us that some students need additional help in order to succeed in the first-year composition course. Therefore, each student enrolled in ENG 101: Effective Writing I, will write an essay which writing faculty will read to determine whether the student needs the additional support of regular writing workshops, scheduled weekly in the Writing Center (Bowman 310) and conducted by the Writing Center staff.

The writing workshop should be thought of like a lab course for a science or foreign language. Those students whose essays show a need for the writing workshop will be required to attend one workshop session each week, and they must satisfactorily fulfill workshop requirements in order to receive an average or above grade in ENG 101. Note that this requirement applies only to the students whom we place in the workshop, on the basis of the in-class essay.

Writing the In-Class Placement Essay

The placement essay will be written during a class period in the first two weeks of the semester. All students write on the same topic. You will receive the reading assignment before the class period when you write the essay and the writing assignment at the beginning of the period when you write it. You may prepare for the essay by reading the assignment and making notes or doing a little research, but you should plan to write your essay during class time. You may use a dictionary or thesaurus, if you need one.

Writing faculty will read placement essays at the end of the second week of classes. Two faculty members will read each essay. Your instructor will inform you if you are required to attend the workshop. You will also receive an email and a letter from Dr. Trupe, Director of the Writing Center.

What to Do if You Are Assigned to the Workshop

You will not need to go to the Registrar's Office to add the Workshop, but the Registrar will have a list of Workshop students on file, and it will be included as part of your schedule. You should schedule a regular workshop session with Dr. Trupe, whose office is in Bowman 311, inside Bowman 310 (phone: 5604; email: atrupe@bridgewater.edu).

Your attendance, preparation, and participation in the workshop will be recorded, and your ENG 101 instructor will be informed of your progress several times throughout the semester. This way, you'll have the benefit of cooperation between two experienced writing instructors in helping you become a better writer.

Description of the Workshop

Plan to bring a current writing project for any class to each scheduled session. You should be prepared to talk about your writing with a Writing Center consultant or Dr. Trupe and to continue working on your project during the workshop.
