AIM tutorial times: TBA

Planning for AIM Consultation

Use your tutorial time wisely by preparing beforehand for an online meeting with a Writing Center consultant. What kind of help do you need? Starting the paper? Documenting sources?  Consider these examples:

  • Do you need help interpreting an assignment? If so, get out your writing assignment or class notes before contacting the tutor, so that you can
    refer to them during your tutorial session.
  • Do you need help with your thesis? If so, try writing 2 or 3 sentences about your paper before chatting with the tutor.
  • Do you need help with organization? If you haven't drafted your paper, make a list of all the ideas you want to include. If you have started drafting, make a rough outline with one point for each paragraph to prepare for discussing organization with the tutor.
  • Do you have a question about documentation? Make sure that you have all the necessary information (the book or article, the Web site, the video) about the source you are quoting before you ask the tutor for help with the bibliography.

Guidelines for Tutorial Consultation in Email

For email help with a paper, please send the following information in your email message:

  • A description of your writing assignment or writing purpose;
  • One or two areas of concern you have. (See examples below.)

You must give us these guidelines for reading your paper. Without them, we cannot comment on your paper via email.

Example 1

I was assigned a book review for my ENG123 class. Prof X said this "should not be a book report." Does my paper sound like a book review or a book report?

Example 2

My prof told me to revise this argumentative paper. I am supposed to show how all the points are related to my thesis. I revised my paper. Did I do what Prof Q told me to? Also, could you check for sentence fragments?

Instructions for Emailing Your Paper:

To include a draft of your writing along with the email message, please attach the file to your message.
