Rubric for Pre-Test and Post-Test Assessment

ENG 101 Essays are scored on the 6-point scale below. ENG 102 Essays receive a 2-part score, using both 6-point scales below.

Used to score ENG 101: Effective Writing I in-class essays and the "writing score" for ENG 102: Effective Writing II in-class essays

1 = Incompetent

Very little text
Or
Disjointed Text
Or
Text riddled with errors in syntax, grammar, spelling, mechanics

 

2 = Minimally Competent

Text may lack focus
And/or
Text is underdeveloped
And/or
Text may contain a high proportion of short, simple sentences
And/or
Text may show limited diction
And/or
Text has substantial number of errors in syntax, grammar, spelling, mechanics

3 = Below Average

Text may be underdeveloped or disorganized
And/or
Text may fail to show relationship between generalizations and specific details
And/or
Text may lack cohesiveness, i.e., connections or transitions between ideas
And/or
Text may lack sentence variety
And/or
Text may show awkward or inappropriate diction
And/or
Text may display a noticeable degree of errors in syntax, grammar, spelling, mechanics

4 = Average

Text is adequately developed
And
Text shows relationship between generalizations and specific details
And
Text shows some degree of cohesiveness, i.e., connections or transitions between ideas
And
Text has some sentence variety
And
Diction is appropriate
And
Text may contain some errors in syntax, grammar, spelling, mechanics

5 = Better than Average

Text is well developed
And
For the most part, details are well chosen to support generalizations
And
Text shows fairly consistent cohesiveness
And
Sentence structure is varied and shows some degree of complexity
And
Diction is appropriate and varied
And
Text shows very few errors in syntax, grammar, spelling, mechanics

6 = Excellent

Text presents a clearly developed argument
And
Details are well chosen to support generalizations
And
Text is consistently cohesive
And
Sentence structure is varied and shows complexity
And
Diction is appropriate, varied, and original
And
Text shows almost no errors in syntax, grammar, spelling, mechanics

Additional scoring criteria for the "literary analysis score" for ENG 102: Effective Writing II in-class essays

1 = Incompetent

Makes no clear point about text
And may include
Random insertions of quotations

2 = Minimally Competent

Summarizes plot
And
Uses quotations

3 = Below Average

Makes an assertion about text
With
Minimal support from text
Or
Is based on serious misreading of text
With or without
Minimal to adequate support from text

4 = Average

Takes a position on the text that can be supported
With
Minimal to adequate evidence from text
That
Is adequately cited

5 = Better than Average

Takes a clear, supportable position on the text
That
Clearly responds to the writing prompt
With
Well-developed supporting points
That
Are adequately developed with relevant quotations, accurately documented
But
May include minor misreadings

6 = Excellent

Makes an insightful argument about the text
That
Is well reasoned
And
Supported with well-chosen quotations and references, accurately documented
And
Includes no misreadings
