Pre-Ministry and Graduate Studies in Philosophy and Religion

Students interested in the ministry, religious education or graduate school in philosophy or religion should select the philosophy and religion major at Bridgewater College. The bachelor’s degree in philosophy and religion will prepare you for admission to a theological seminary to pursue a master of arts or a master of divinity degree. Such a master's degree is prerequisite for ordination to the ministry in most denominations.

A bachelor’s degree in philosophy and religion is also excellent preparation for admission to other master's degree programs in philosophy, religion, law, counseling or other humanities disciplines. The degree also qualifies you for lay leadership in religious education, or for doing church work.

In the last decade, 98 percent of majors (and minors) from the philosophy and religion program who have applied to graduate schools have been accepted.

Those who have gone into graduate schools in pre-ministry have been accepted by schools such as:

  • Bethany Theological Seminary
  • Eastern Mennonite Seminary
  • Oxford University
  • Princeton Theological Seminary
  • Union Theological Seminary (Va.)
  • Virginia Theological Seminary
  • Wesley Theological Seminary
  • Yale Divinity School

Those who have gone into graduate schools in counseling, law, peace studies, philosophy, religious studies, etc. have been accepted by schools such as:
