Chris Obenshain ’00
Chris Obenshain didn’t know he had family ties to Bridgewater College until he began the process of applying to colleges. Once he learned his uncle, Richard D. Obenshain (former candidate for the U.S. Senate), had attended Bridgewater, he became even more interested and decided BC was the right place for him.
“What I appreciate most about my BC education is how Bridgewater sought to educate and connect us with the world outside the boundaries of our campus and integrated the idea of service to the community into our education,” Obenshain commented.
After graduating from BC with a B.A. in political science in 2000, he worked for the U.S. Senate for two years. After leaving D.C., he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve and began law school at the University of Virginia, where he graduated with a J.D. in 2006. He clerked for the Virginia Court of Appeals for one year before taking a position as Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney in Radford, Va., in 2007. Obenshain was commissioned as a Judge Advocate Generals (JAG) Corps officer in the Army Reserve in 2009 and moved to Richmond, Va., in 2010 to begin work in the Virginia Attorney General’s office.
He is now an Assistant Attorney General in Criminal Appeals at the Virginia Attorney General’s office, as well as a legal assistance attorney in the U.S. Army Reserve JAG Corps. Obenshain believes his BC education has been a key part of his career success. “Bridgewater gave me a strong and broad educational foundation that enabled me to go immediately into the working world, adapt to different work environments and, ultimately, narrow my focus to my chosen profession in the legal field.”
Obenshain is active in his church, Area 10 Faith Community in Richmond, where he is an elder and small group leader. He has gone on several trips with his church to work with children in an orphanage in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Also an active BC alumnus, he has been involved in organizing events in the Richmond area and is a member of the BC Alumni Association Board of Directors. A recipient of the 2013 Young Alumnus Award, Obenshain said he is always looking for opportunities to talk about Bridgewater wherever he goes.
