Jeff Miller discovered Bridgewater College when his aunt brought him for a visit. He loved the College immediately and was soon involved in campus life as a member of the honor council and as an editor for The Talon newspaper and the Ripples yearbook.

“The thing that I appreciated most was how tight-knit of a community BC is—faculty, staff and fellow students are all part of a big extended family,” Miller said of his experience. Graduating in 1993 as a political science major and communication minor, he soon got involved in public service, which would be the focus of his future career. From 1996 to 1997, he was the head of Congressman Bob Goodlatte’s district office in Harrisonburg, Va., followed by a year in Washington, D.C., as Goodlatte’s Systems Manager, a position in which he handled thousands of letters, emails and phone calls from constituents.

For the next seven years (1998-2005), Miller worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as a government affairs liaison, coordinating disaster response and constituent needs with members of Congress. After that, he worked for the Department of Transportation in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). After serving in several roles at both the FMCSA and the Capitol Police, he has been in his current position with the Capitol Police since 2012. As a Strategic Planning and Performance Management Officer, Miller oversees emergency planning and contingency planning for the office and works with nearly 1,800 police officers. He was most recently a Deputy Commander for the Inauguration Planning Task Force. Miller also holds a master’s degree in government studies from Johns Hopkins University.

Miller believes that his education at Bridgewater taught him how to see context in the world around him and how to form his own values and standards for ethical conduct. He treasures his current involvement in the BC Alumni Association Board of Directors. Currently the President-Elect of the Board, he embraces the opportunity to interact with the College, engage in events, recruit students and get in touch with other alumni from BC. “I love seeing what students are doing now—their energy and enthusiasm.”
